From the Rabbi

How did you do? The point is, none of us remember

the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with

their owners. HERE IS ANOTHER QUIZ. SEE HOW YOU DO ON THIS ONE:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name 3 friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name 5 people who have taught you

something worthwhile. 4. Think of a few people, who have made you

feel appreciated and special. 5. Think of 5 people you enjoy spending time

with. 6. Name a half dozen heroes whose stories

have inspired you. Easier? The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the

ones who care. Pass this on to people who have made a difference in your life. Have a wonderful summer!

Shalom,

Rabbi Jacob Luski

The month of June means that we are rapidly approaching the end of the Jewish Year. During the summer is a good time for all of us to start the emotional, intellectual and spiritual tune-

up for the New Year 5770 and the High Holy Day Season. A friend sent me an

insightful quiz that helps focus on the real priorities of life. Answering the questions helps serve to establish some appropriate directions as to how our lives should move in the coming years. Answer the questions and think about what you have to do, so that you can join

the list of those individuals who make a real difference in the lives of others. HOPE YOU FIND THE QUIZ THOUGHTFUL:

1. Name the 5 wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last 5 Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last 5 winners of the Miss America contest.

4. Name 10 people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last 6 Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series

winners.

fun time at rehearsals, and promise you it will be a rewarding experience. Another summer activity is seeing a blockbuster summer movie. This summer we have the opportunity to see another Star Trek movie. OK, I can

just hear the sighs (not from Alice or Larry Ettinger), but it is true. Almost all of the Star Trek stories (they are written by Jews) have their roots in the Torah or Talmud. Go see the newest movie and come see me or email me and we'll discuss the Jewish message. Though I have not yet seen the movie, as a student of Torah, I know there will be at least one message. After

all, everything in life has a message rooted in Torah. Over the summer we will be learning some new melodies and having a little more laid back services. Join us and come open some new musical gifts. If you do a mitzvah during the week come and thank Hashem for allowing you to help someone else

or even yourself. So, this summer, share your Judaism with yourself, your family, your Congregation and friends and open those gifts. See you in Shul, no sun screen necessary. "Live Long and Prosper"

B’Shalom

Hazzan Paul D. Goldstein

Summer has officially arrived. We have a lull in the Jewish holidays but not a lull in our responsibilities as Jews. Try to do at least one daily Mitzvah. Call a fellow congregant or friend who is

under the weather or just a little down, come to a Minyan; volunteer in the

Synagogue for an hour or two; email an old friend or relative; volunteer to baby-sit for a friend who never

gets out; if you own a business try to give some work to someone who is unemployed; spend some time with your family. There has never been

a reported case of anyone saying on their death bed, "I wish I'd spent more time at work". God made summers hot so we'd want to be lazy, renew our body, mind and spirit as well as our relationships. Take advantage and relax. For some of us a vacation is simply sleeping until the sun comes up. One summer activity is having Choir Rehearsals

for the High Holydays. We will be rehearsing on Thursday evenings (while not away on vacation). I know that there are many congregants that have sung in the choir in the past (but maybe not over the last several years). If you feel getting back into it, we always have a

It’s hard to believe the school year and calendar year of programming is quickly coming to an end. This has been a fabulous year! Our youth have been busy with preschool, religious school, youth programs, and Hebrew High School. Our members

have been busy attending services, participating in events, learning in adult studies classes, and enjoying Sisterhood and Men’s Club’s events. If you want camaraderie and want

to have a good time, make plans now to become more involved. We are in the process of forming next year’s calendar of services and events and there are plenty of opportunities for you to take advantage of. Just ask. I would like to take a moment to thank the outgoing officers and board of trustees for their dedicated service, and especially to Susan Marger LeVine, Immediate Past President, for her outstanding two-year leadership. She has created a refreshing atmosphere in our shul, and has made my job very rewarding. Todah Rabah! I would also like to welcome our newly elected officers and board members. Under the leadership of Karen Sher, President, I look

forward to a rewarding year. Remember we are open for business year round. Plan to enjoy “Glimpses into Jewish History” at Friday evening Shabbat services, and sermonettes at Saturday morning services. If you would like to be a Shabbos morning greeter Saturday morning, please let me know. It’s a great way to greet our members on Shabbos, and welcome those visiting us. Whatever your summer plans are, please enjoy and be safe. Have a fantastic summer.

Sara Latham, Executive Director

Page 4 B’nai Israel Review

This is my fond farewell. I’ve braved two years at the helm of the shul, through smooth and unchartered seas and am grateful for both the honor and the experience of being shul president. I am most appreciative to Steve LeVine, my

grounded, loving husband and our sweet kids Jen (22), Jared (12), Marc (10) and Danielle (8) for weathering it through with me!

I’ve been given gifts. Gifts of friendship are the ones I will cherish most. We are truly blessed with a team of hard working and dedicated staff and volunteers who manage the multitude of calendared programs. Sara Latham, Anita Helfand, Pam Askin and Barbara Jarvis are our front line team, and keep us all on course. We are fortunate to have Sara’s “whatever it takes” attitude and intuition as our executive director, because she not only burns the hours on both ends of the day, but she also knows when to drop her daily workload to aid a congregant who has lost a loved one. Religious school director Ilana Dayan, preschool director Bonnie Halprin, youth director Sandy Brasch as

well as Wilma, Pei and Chris are all invaluable, dedicated workers. Our services are brightened with Rabbi Luski’s sermons, Hazzan Paul Goldstein’s davening, Debbie Marmon’s Torah

readings (you must hear her read Megillah!) alongside a true wealth of talented service lay leaders. Our shul’s greatest wealth is in our congregants who volunteer endless hours to keep our synagogue a vibrant house for prayer, meeting and learning. We are a Beit Tefillah, a Beit Knesset, a Beit Midrash. We have a vibrant Sisterhood and Men’s Club who provide many enrichment events and delicious food to feed both our hearts and our souls.

We have volunteers working on house committee, adult education, Mitzvah Day, Hebrew High, Gift and Craft festival, youth, preschool, religious school, membership, High Holiday services, Bulletin, CBI Website, fundraisers and so much more. Our minyan captains enable our shul to provide a twice daily minyan and our minyannaires provide a delicious post-morning minyan nosh! We are truly blessed with Hevra Kadisha, two mitzvah teams, one ladies and one men, who perform the loving and kind ceremonial cleansing of the deceased according to Jewish law. During my term, no decision was made in a

vacuum. Our congregation is comprised of a very hard-working team of executive committee and board of trustees as well as past presidents and lawyers who made themselves available for emergency-called meetings. I relied on the advice of past presidents and lawyers, and to them I am immensely grateful. Another bright legal mind I called on often is that of my dad, Bruce Marger, who could provide wisdom and insight, having served as president twice of Temple Beth El during my growing up years. As a child, I learned leadership by watching both of my brothers take on

terms as president of our temple youth group. This past year, I enjoyed giving preferential treatment at board of trustees meetings to my own “Brother Bill,” Men’s Club President Bill Marger, as I called on him to share his remarks. Toward the end of my term, I could almost anticipate Rabbi’s response to a given question. I’ve enjoyed my direct phone line to him. We have a mutual respect and I appreciate the fact that he has rabbinic laws as well as advice of ritual and lay leaders and the needs of our congregants to guide his judgements. During my tenure we approved Shabbat-friendly games (available to small

children following morning service) and paved the way toward innovative service programming (although I’m sad to say I didn’t get to experience Havdallah on the Beach (held after sundown, so we’d need to have the city approve a bonfire)! I appreciated being able to discuss issues candidly with our Rabbi and it is my hope I can continue to share my enthusiasm to bring innovative programming to engage families of all ages in the beauty of Shabbat and Jewish practice. Like a seasoned captain, I now take my turn on dry land, a bit stronger, steadier, infinitely wiser with a crop of weathered curls to show for my journey.

Shalom, Susan Marger LeVine, President

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH

The Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah had a very successful year with ruach and great programming. Lag B’omer celebration was a lot of fun. The students enjoyed good food and enjoyed participating in games.

Yom Ha Atzmaut – Israel Independence Day – Each student of the Talmud Torah selected and researched very important people who contributed highly to the State of Israel. They presented reports on Prime Ministers, Presidents, Songwriters. The PRTT closing program took place on Sunday, May 17th with the students starting out with Shaharit. Their studies were highlighted and they related to their parents their studies in Tefila and Torah. The refreshments were delicious and was enjoyed

by all who attended.

To the families of the Talmud Torah, thank you

for your dedication and support.

The PRTT staff should be commended under the

YOUTH DEPARTMENT This past month has been exciting around the youth department. May 1st we held our first USY/Kadima and Alumni Shabbat. It was exciting to have so many of the kids lead prayers with their parents who are USY Alumni. It was special for me to share this Shabbat with many friends with whom I was in USY over 40 years ago! What fun we had during the Oneg Shabbat

looking over photos from as far back at the 60’s! I am proud to say CBI was represented at the Interfaith Environmental Coalition celebration of Earth Day, in April, and was recognized for the recycling program our Youth Department has adopted! USY has elected a new board and I wish them all a Mazel Tov! Being chosen by one’s peers to lead your organization is a huge responsibility. I will continue my focus on training and work to teach the board how to work successfully as a team. Kadimaniks, along with 11 other chapters, had a blast at Adventure Island for their end of the year bash!

This year we celebrated Shavuot with a traditional dairy dinner. The younger kids were entertained by USY’ers who acted out the story of receiving the Torah and had a yummy time making and decorating their own cookies. It is a bitter sweet time as we say goodbye to our seniors. You are a unique group and added to the lively personality of our youth group. We wish you luck as you embark on your new adventure. Although you will be attending schools all over the country remember you always have a home at CBI and hold a special place in our hearts.

Over the summer I will be redecorating the Youth Lounge. I have several items on my wish list. Please take a look and see if you can help fill any of my wishes! T.V.

Couch or Loveseat (one or two)

Beanbag chairs (4)

Narrow credenza about 4 feet long and 1 foot wide

Games for Wii

Where ever your summer plans take you, have fun and be safe!

B’Shalom

CBI USY NEWS AND VIEWS By Allison Warren

SPUSY Chapter President

As I write, I am sad to note that this is the last USY bulletin note I will write as president. It has been an interesting year with many ups and downs, but our USY group has gotten through it together. The family bond we have is incredible and I'm proud to be part of this group.

Looking back on the year I am proud of what we have accomplished. We had a lot of great events such as our bowling SATO event and our techno party. We adopted an Israeli soldier and really did a lot of great SATO work and raised quite a bit of money. We had many fun beach days and dine and dashes. It was incredible to see everyone come together this year and work in unison. I also want to thank everyone in USY, and the CBI community for that matter, that has been so supportive of Michael and me during this difficult time for our family. All the love and prayers for our mother

makes things much better. I have never been more thankful for my community family. I have thoroughly enjoyed being president of SPUSY for this year. We've had many successes, and as I leave for Indiana University, I know that I will miss my USY and CBI family. We did it together this year. I think I speak for all of the graduating seniors when I say that we will truly miss USY. Congratulations to the new board and I hope there are even more successes next year!

PLEASE TELL THE RABBI If you know of anyone who is ill

or hospitalized and would

appreciate a call or visit from Rabbi Luski, please call

the synagogue office. You will do a good mitzvah

especially since several hospitals in our area, due to

security procedures and protection of patient’s privacy

rights, will not release the names of Jewish patients.

QUOTE God waits long, but pays with interest.

TO BOOK MEETING ROOMS If you are having a

meeting or event, you must reserve a room with

Pam Askin as soon as possible to schedule it on

the Synagogue calendar to make sure there is a room

available, all facilities information is known, and a custodian

knows to open and close the building at the proper time. Also, if you need to cancel a

meeting or a room reservation, please notify the synagogue office as well.

Ushers for High Holidays

We will soon be organizing our ushering committee for the high holidays 5770. We need new ushers and the old regulars. There are many shifts that are open and no one works too hard. Ushers give out pledge cards for the Israel Bond Appeal, Kol Nidre, and Yizkor as well as making sure our congregational family is safe during services. We Need Your Help! Please call the synagogue office at 381-4900 and let us know that you will be interested in ushering. Watch the mail – you will soon receive a notice informing you of the ushering planning meeting.

BUNS FAMILY LIBRARY

Page 10 B’nai Israel Review

Recently three members of the Library Committee attended a meeting of the Jewish Library Association, in Longboat Key. It was interesting to compare notes about common problems - organizing and

classifying the collection, deciding what new works to purchase, and encouraging use of the library for research and pleasure reading. We will continue to work on these projects for your benefit, and hope you will take advantage of what we have to offer. Our Sunday Matinee film series, Jewish Journeys Through Film, has been a great success, with over 70 attendees at each showing. Our thanks go to Sara Latham for managing the audio-visual equipment, and to Chris and Wilma for helping with set-up and refreshments. We hope to continue this series in the coming year - let us know if you have suggestions for films you would like to see.

Remember - we are in the library on Thursday mornings, or call us to meet you at another time. You may also get a key from the office and sign out books at the desk next to the computer. Enjoy the summer!

Janet Augenbraun, co-chair Library Committee

CBI-HADASSAH BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP We will resume our meetings in October. Over the summer we encourage you to read the books we plan to discuss next year so that you can participate in

Books for next season: Sarah’s Key, A City of Thieves, A Pigeon and a Boy, The Emperor’s Children, Water for Elephants, Vivaldi’s Virgins, The Year of Living Biblically, Crossing California, A Tale of Love and Darkness and Dancing with Einstein.

We appreciate your participation and express our sincere gratitude for the

spiritual leadership you provide to our city.

In Praise of Our Ba’alat Kriah

Deborah Marmon has been our Ba‘alat Kriah – Torah Reader – at Congregation B‘nai Israel for more than five years. The quality of her chanting, as we know, is superb – both musically and enunciation-wise – and Debbie goes about her service to our shul in a somewhat anonymous way. In one sense, her work is similar to that of a baseball umpire – when they do an excellent job, they are less noticed. So, let‘s consider for a moment some of what is involved in the work of a Torah Reader.

Those of you who have read Torah from the Bima (I have not) know how truly challenging it is to prepare to read for a single aliyah during a single service: having to learn to precisely pronounce the words, and read without the benefit of vowels in the Scroll; learning the Torah trope, first by the symbols, then likewise without the trope in the Scroll; then putting the words and trope notes together; THEN doing the presentation before the Congregation. Now imagine having to be able to deliver several aliyot of Torah reading, and often times the entire parsha, again with unfailing musical and pronunciation precision. Now imagine preparing week in and week out throughout the year. You now have some idea of Debbie Marmon‘s profound talent and dedication to her singular role in the ritual life of our shul.

In my conversations with Debbie, I know that she regards her service to us as a labor love; it is a calling that comes from her conscience and her being, and not from any sense of, ‗it‘s a job.‘ Indeed, the remuneration she receives is quite modest, given the volume of effort and the precision demanded. We constantly behold her extraordinary ability, and yet I think many of us have at times taken it, and her, for granted. Knowledgeable observers, both inside and outside our congregation, have remarked at her talent; ―She has a gift‖ is one of the comments I heard not long ago, and the truly lovely lilt of her chanting does add so much to the beauty and meaningfulness of our services. Of course, not only does she read Torah on Shabbat, but also chants Megillat Esther on Purim with same degree of commitment.

As chairman of CBI‘s Ritual Committee, I am privileged to have this ‗forum‘, so to speak, to comment on matters relating to our Ritual practices. Whenever the thought of trying to read Torah has come to mind, I think of Debbie delivering each reading so beautifully, and am in awe of the knowledge and skill that is involved in doing what she does, as well as she does, and as much as she does. So, to our Ba‘alat Kriah, I take my Kepah off to you, and want you to know the profound admiration and appreciation your congregational family has for the qualities of your service to us, and your involvement in our shul. Todah Rabah, Debbie.

Respectfully, Morry Bornstein

Chair, Ritual Committee

TISHA B’AV AND THE 3 WEEKS

What are the Three Weeks? According to the Mishnah, Taanit 3:16, a number of disasters occurred to our ancestors on both the 17

th of Tammuz and the 9

th of Av.

Two of the disasters, which occurred, concern the destruction of the Second Temple. On the 9

th of Av both the First and

Second Temples were destroyed. The next Mishnah, Taanit 3:7, states that during the week in which Tisha B‘Av, the 9

th of Av

falls, it is forbidden to both cut one‘s hair and to do laundry. From the second Mishnah we see that a number of customs associated with mourning were observed in order to remind us of the gravity of the destruction, which befell Israel. While the Mishnah states the mourning customs are observed only the week in which Tisha B‘Av falls, the Talmud brings a number of Tannaitic opinions which hold that the mourning customs are observed from Hodesh Av, from the first day of the month of Av (Taanit 29b). It wasn‘t until centuries later that the custom developed to observe some of the mourning customs from the 17

th of Tammuz. Rabbi Moses

Isseries in his glosses on the Shulhan Arukh says, ―The custom is to be strict about the prohibitions of doing laundry from Rosh Hodesh, but regarding cutting one‘s hair, the custom is to be strict from the 7th of Tammuz‖ (Orakh Hayyim 551:4). In addition to the prohibitions mentioned in the Mishnah, it has been customary not to perform marriages from the 17

th of

Tammuz until after Tisha B‘Av and some people also minimize the eating of meat and drinking of wine.

I am proud to have worked this past year with the other members of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee as well as the CBI staff and to have been successful in our efforts to reduce expenses for our congregation. Our work, however, is far from over. I have the primary responsibility for raising funds for CBI. We have tried this year, during this tough economic time, to find creative ways to raise money without always asking you for money and donations. It is crucial that all of our members participate. We can not succeed without you. Please continue to support CBI with donations whenever possible but remember all the following ways you can help that cost you no additional money!!! Save your printer and copier cartridges and

bring them to the office. Recycle your newspapers and magazines in

Have You Ever Wondered The Following:

When should I bow?

When should I respond? When should I take 3 steps back?

When do I wear a Tallit? When should I be silent? When is the Torah read?

How do I daven Mincha, Maariv, Shacharit?

The answers to these questions and many more will be answered in a new class “How To Daven”. This very informative class will be held in two sessions. Whether it’s for daily minyan or for yom tov services, learn the customs and rules of Jewish prayer. To register for this free class, please call the office and place your reservation. 381-4900.

DONATION NOTES…

Donations may be made by mailing

or bringing in a note to the

synagogue office detailing the

name of the fund, the reason for

the donation, to whom it should go

and the donor’s name, along with

a check made out to Congregation

B’nai Israel. Please note that if the

recipient is not a member, please

include the address. It would be greatly appreciated if

checks for donations were separate from other checks

to the congregation. The CBI accountant would be most

appreciative.

For Sisterhood and Men’s Club dues and donations,

please make checks payable to them. This makes record

keeping easier.

OFFICE DROP BOX

As a reminder that there is a Secured Drop Box available at

the shul and at your service whenever you are in the

building. It is located outside of the Synagogue office across from the Judaica Shop. You can drop off your messages, contributions, etc.

when coming to minyan, meetings, social events, and classes or when bringing children to school. It is an easy way to communicate within the congregational

family. Drop-in sometime!
