Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC

Dear Alumni and Friends of CBA,

Welcome to the Winter 2014 edition of CBA’s Alumni Newsletter!

A common motto or catchphrase used by many schools is, “Enter to learn…Leave to serve.” Christian Brothers Academy is proud that the “spirit of service” is very much evident in our school community. The required service expectation of our graduating seniors is a small indication of the many hundreds of service hours that our students complete both in school and out of school.

The Lasallian Youth programs in both our high school and junior high, along with our Campus Ministry programs provide opportunities for our students to participate in service-oriented projects in response to the needs of people in our local community of Central New York. The Lasallian Mission & Ministry team established at CBA two years ago, engages students, faculty and alumni in projects that are service oriented both within and outside of our school community.

This edition of the Alumni Newsletter will give you a small glimpse of CBA’s outreach in service to groups and individuals that have been and continue to be touched by the generosity and efforts of our students, faculty and alumni.

In addition to highlighting CBA’s commitment to service, special attention will also be given to the recipients of the “Distinguished Alumni Award” who were honored this past November for their accomplishments and contributions of service in society. The motivation of these alumni stemmed from their “spirit of service” which was undoubtedly nourished by their families and through their education at CBA.

Also of interest to you will be the accomplishments of our students in the areas of academics, athletics and the fine arts.

I hope that you enjoy reading through this winter edition of the Alumni Newsletter and that you will agree with me that our students here at CBA really do “Enter to learn….Leave to serve.”

Sincerely,

Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC Principal 315-446-5960 x1229 [email protected]

Keeping the Mission AliveSt. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, led a life centered on three aspects that he felt were fundamental in living a Christian life. His three facets of faith, community and service have inspired not only modern members of the society of Brothers, but also lay men and women who see these as the center of a Christian life. Faith, community and service. Students at CBA are taught about faith. They learn about de La Salle’s faith and how it was demonstrated, as he allowed his life to be guided by Providence. They learn about community and how de La Salle built a community of Christian Brothers, who were dedicated to serving those who were poverty-stricken, neglected by society and in need. The students exhibit their service as they are actively involved in helping raise money for their twin school, the Child Discovery Center in Nakuru, Kenya, a home for street and destitute children and they participate in service projects for Advent and Lent. And while faith, community and service are apparent in the halls of Christian Brothers Academy, it is important to keep de La Salle’s mission alive and well. That is the mission of faculty member Matt Keough.Keough, who has taught Math at CBA since 2004, was one of 10 Lasallian faculty members in the country that attended the 3rd International Symposium of Young Lasallians in Rome, Italy Feb. 9-15. “I was extremely honored to be selected to attend the Symposium,” Keough said. “We have great young teachers at CBA Syracuse as well as throughout the District and Region.”Keough, a Lasallian Leadership Institute graduate, as well as a participant in the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian studies, was chosen because of his previous involvement with Lasallian formation opportunities. Another contributing factor was his involvement with the formation of the Mission and Ministry Team at CBA Syracuse. “This team (Mission and Minstry Team) was founded specifically to ensure that the core values of a Lasallian education continue to be present in our school,” Keough shared. “After just two years, the team has been responsible for organizing an Alumni Day of Service (put together by Patti Callahan and Dave Marshall), a Founder’s Day Celebration (Maureen Lasda, Tom Benz, and Monica Hanson), a Faculty Formation Program (Vin Horan, Todd Benware, Peggy Perkins, and Dave Roache), and a Faculty-Student Mentoring Program (Anne Cabal). The Mission and Ministry Team has done remarkable work, and my selection to attend the Symposium is an affirmation from the District and Region, recognizing the great work that the team has accomplished.”

According to Keough, the Young Lasallian Symposium is essential to the continued success of the Lasallian mission. “Young people are the future of the mission,” Keough said. “All members of the Lasallian family are important, but there is a sense of hopefulness when we gather our young people together. The Young Lasallian Symposium recognized the importance of young people in sustaining the Mission, but more importantly, it represented the hope that all Lasallians carry for the future.” According to Keough, the Symposium demonstrated the Brothers’ dedication to ensure that the “work” of John Baptist de La Salle continues.“To the Brothers, it has always been about the work with students. This continues today with the emphasis from the Brothers to include lay men and women in our schools, not as hierarchal inferiors, but as partners, together accomplishing the work of OUR Founder.”

CBA Brothers Alumni Magazine Winter 2014 4

Keough hopes that what he learned at the Symposium can inspire all faculty and staff members, in particular Young Lasallians, who will carry on the Lasallian Mission.“The Brothers have always been dedicated to forming their teachers, lay and religious, not only as great teachers, but great Lasallian teachers; developing a faculty and staff that demonstrates a concern for the poor, is dedicated to an excellent education, exemplifies a faith in God, is inclusive of all students and exhibits a respect for all people. “CBA has always focused on educating the heart, mind, and spirit,” Keough added. “Programs such as the Young Lasallians Symposium continue to help instruct faculty and staff about the importance of shaping young men and women of character, young men and women who not only possess knowledge, but are equipped with a moral compass to use that knowledge to benefit all members of society. In the end, all the work that we do is for the students. It may be programs for the faculty and staff, but it all works towards the same goal, providing a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor.”

Service at CBAAdvent ProjectCBA students reached out to needy children at the St. Vincent de Paul Day Care and After School program by delivering toys and winter clothes as part of this year’s Advent project. In November, Peer Ministers in Social Justice spoke to students during their religion classes about the project and the importance of giving during the holiday season to the children at St. Vincent De Paul Day Care. The Peer Ministers showed a short DVD on the meaning of poverty. Many families who send their children to the day care and after school program are living below the poverty level and are not able to afford winter clothing and toys. Each homeroom at CBA was assigned three children along with their names, ages, sizes and wishes. Students delivered collected gifts for dozens of underprivileged children on Monday, Dec. 16.

Service at CBA (continued)Twinning ProgramIn 1995, the Institute of the Christian Brothers called for the United States and Toronto to launch a Twinning Program to financially assist the Lwanga District in Africa and enable them to achieve self-sufficiency in the long-term. CBA Syracuse was paired with the Child Discovery Center (CDC) in Nakura, Kenya. The CDC, which receives monetary assistance from CBA annually, is a home for street and destitute children that aims at addressing the needs of the growing population of street children. Because of poverty, unemployment, marital instability, single-parent families and AIDS, many children are either orphans or in a family situation with no one to care for them. CDC serves about 125 boys and girls by providing shelter and meals. On March 7, the Multi-Cultural club will be holding a concert to help raise money and awareness for the twin school.

Service FairStudents had an opportunity to learn more about service organizations in the Syracuse area, as Peer Ministers hosted a Service Fair in the Callahan Gym on Feb. 4.More than 20 local organizations were on hand to provide information and answer questions from students. It was a great opportunity for students in all grade levels to not only learn about the organizations, but to get some ideas about how to complete their required service hours for school.“All of our students can benefit from a constant reminder that it is our responsibility as Christians and part of the world community to help others and serve for the greater good,” said Marijane Finlay, Campus Ministry Service Coordinator. “The Service Fair is a great way to connect our students with organizations in the community that may appeal to them.”Organizations that were represented at the Service Fair included: Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, Crouse Hospital, ARISE at the Farm (farm and family services), Samaritan Center, Camp Healing Hearts, ASPCA, Van Duyn, Ronald McDonald House, Upstate Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Francis House, Menorah Park, Camp Alverna, St. Camillus, Northside CYO, Meals on Wheels, Rosamond Gifford Zoo, VA Medical Center, Assumption Church Services, St. Vincent de Paul and Camp Sunshine.

Lenten ProjectThis year’s Lenten Mission will support the Syracuse Challenger Baseball program. This program started eight years ago and is the largest single District Little League organization in the nation, providing opportunities for children with special needs to play baseball. The league has 12 teams and involves more than 220 children with plans for expansion. The monies raised will help the Challengers build their “Field of Dreams” complex in Carrier Park in Dewitt. The complex will be

fully handicapped accessible and open to children of all abilities to play not only baseball, but also lacrosse, football, soccer and softball. “Our students are very excited about this project and are hopeful that all of our CBA community can give us support,” Finlay said.

Alumni Day Of ServiceThe inaugural Alumni Day of Service was held in Syracuse and Boston on Oct. 5. It was designed by the Mission and Ministry team at CBA to unite Alumni by demonstrating their continued commitment to their Founder, John Baptist de La Salle, by serving those most in need in their local communities. The day of service began at Our Lady of Pompei Church with a beautiful prayer led by Matt Keough.Syracuse area alumni were dispersed in various locations including the Rescue Mission and Cathedral Academy at Pompei on the North side of Syracuse performing service tasks such as cleaning and painting, while Boston area alumni served dinner at a veterans’ shelter.

Distinguished Alumni AwardsMore than 200 family and friends attended the inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner held on Nov. 2 at the DoubleTree Hotel on Carrier Circle. This award recognizes CBA graduates who have made significant contributions to society and whose accomplishments, affiliations and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at CBA. The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented bi-annually alternating with the Lasallian Athletic Hall of Fame Award. This year’s recipients were: Dr. Carl Baum ’58, Daniel Byrne ’70, Rev. Louis J. CBA welcomed a record crowd of approximately 1,200 people from around Central New York to its Annual Open House on Oct.27, 2013. The event was an opportunity to learn more about a Lasallian education at CBA and tour the hallways that embodied this year’s theme “Step Into Your Future At CBA.”Student tour guides proudly shared the beautiful campus and offered their personal perspectives on the CBA experience. “It was very exciting that many of our prospective families expressed how pleased they were to experience the much heard about CBA spirit,” said Holly Dowd, Director of Admissions. “Through the people they met and the atmosphere in the building, we were able to convey what makes our school unique. To me, that’s even more impressive than the sheer number of visitors who came through in two hours.”

CBA Announces Corvette Raffle Winner Brian Mikelbank of Euclid, OH is the winner of the Christian Brothers Academy 23rd Annual Corvette Raffle, sponsored by East Syracuse Chevrolet, BannerEnvy and TJ Maxx.

Mikelbank’s name was drawn by Principal Br. Joseph Jozwiak, FSC in front of students, faculty members and staff during a winter sports assembly in the John Lynch Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 10. Also on hand were Gino Barbuto, owner of East Syracuse Chevrolet; Mike Barker of BannerEnvy; Joe Cali, of WFBL radio’s Classic Car Roundup and volunteers.

Mikelbank’s winning ticket number was 076547. He had his choice between the 2014 Crystal Red Corvette or the $35,000. He chose the car and will pick it up sometime in March.

Jozwiak tried to contact Mikelbank in front of the student body and staff, however, he wasn’t available.

“I was next door at my neighbors and I received the two phone messages,” Mikelbank said when later reached by phone. “I thought the two messages were from our plumber. I went on the website and I saw it, I couldn’t believe it.”

Mikelbank said he has buying raffle tickets for several years. His wife Kristen is from Manlius and his brother-in-law Kirk Gibson graduated from CBA in 1995.

The second prize winner of $1,000 was Scott C. Lester of Cicero, NY (ticket number 106443). Winning third prize, which was $500 was Cheryl Dart of Skaneateles, NY (ticket number 079212).

It is a vital part of sustaining the outstanding programs and facilities we offer our students at CBA,” said Annemarie Mosley, Associate Director of Special Events and Programs. “We thank all of those who supported this year’s Corvette raffle, especially our parent volunteers, and we congratulate Brian Mikelbank, this year’s winner.”
