Caves are created by Ground Water
Water, when mixed with Carbon containing material, makes
Carbonic Acid.
Acids dissolve limestone and marble, just like acidic vinegar
dissolves a sea shell.

STALACTITES… WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
• STALAGMITE - a deposit of calcium carbonate formed by the dripping of water into the shape of a large inverted icicle rising from the floor of a cave.
• STALACTITE - a deposit of calcium carbonate formed by the trickling of water from the roof of a cave.
Wow! Stalagmites and stalactites
are cool, but how do I remember which is which?
Here are a couple of ways to help you remember…
A stalagmite pushes up with all its might, and a stalactite
holds on tight to the roof. OR

STALACTITE -- From the Ceiling
