    Course Objectives:

    Communication: Students will be able to understand basicSpanish and will be able to communicate with others aboutsome familiar topics.

    Cultures: Students will learn about, and develop sensitivity

    to, Spanish language cultures.

    Connections: Students will learn to connect the topics in this

    class to other academic areas and previous knowledge theymay already have.

    Comparisons: Students will learn by comparing the culture

    and language of our country to that of Spanish languagecountries.

    Communities: Students will learn ways they can becomemore involved in the community, and will take steps towardsbecoming life-long Spanish learners. Some of the topics thatwill be covered include myself, family and friends; my home,school, neighborhood, and community; and my country andthe world.

    Required Materials:

    You will need:

    o 3-ring binder and dividers

    o notebook/papero pen/pencil

    o En EspaolLevel 1 textbook

    You may also want to purchase a Spanish-English dictionary for use in class and

    at home.

    Participation:

    As you we will all be learning this new language together, participation is

    essential. As such, you will need to participate on a daily basis.

    Also, most of my lessons will be conducted primarily in Spanish so as to better

    immerse students in the language. Try to speak Spanish whenever possible! You

    will earn extra points for a strong effort.

    Grades: Tests/quizzes/projects 60 %Homework 15 %

    Participation 25 %

    If you feel you are struggling in the class or just want some extra help, I will be

    available after school. Please make arrangements with me prior to that day to

    avoid conflicts with scheduling.

    Absences & Make-up Work: We will follow the policies in the student handbook for absent work. I will accept

    unexcused late work forone day after it is due for credit.

    Make-up exams for excused absences can be done before of after school.

    Classroom Rules & Expectations:

    Respect!!! We will all show respect to everyone in the classroom. This includes

    not talking when others are talking, raising your hand, etc.

    No gum. It will be hard enough learning to speak a new language without having

    gum in your mouth.

    All other school rules will be followed in our classroom.

    o (No food, cell phones, etc.)

    Hall Passes. You will be given four hall passes per semester to use the restroom,

    go to your locker, etc- use them wisely! If you have any unused passes at the end

    of the semester, you may redeem them for 2 pts. extra credit each to go towardsyour participation grade.

    What parents can do to help:

    Feel free to contact me at anytime by email or by calling the school during the

    school day.

    Quiz your students! Even if you may not speak Spanish, you can still help. Giveyour student the word in English and have your student say the Spanish

    equivalent aloud.

    Participate in student-led conferences in October and March.
