RECORDS’ CONTEXT

Name of creators: Catriona Macdonald, Mairead Macdonald

Administrative history: This collection represents the work of two sisters, Catriona (1920-2006) and Mairead (1921-1990) Macdonald. Their mother Margaret, née Mackinnon, was born in Staffin and married Dugald Macdonald, a banker from Portree. Both parents were native Gaelic speakers, a language they passed on to their daughters. Catriona and Mairead were born in Karachi, living in India until 1929 when they moved to London, later studying at the Harrow School of Art. In May 1943, both sisters were registered as qualified designers for industry and were elected as Fellows of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce.

The Macdonald sisters continued to travel, spending significant periods of their life in South Africa and Malta before finally settling in Sark. After her sister’s death in 1990, Catriona continued to live in Sark until the last year of her life. She died in Uig, Skye, in August 2006.

John Angus Mackinnon (1895-1917) was the youngest of Margaret (Maggie) Mackinnon’s brothers. He was working as a bank clerk in Portree when he enlisted with the 4th Cameron Highlanders. He was posted to France in February 1915. He was wounded at Festubert in May 1915, returning to action by September 1915 when he was selected to train as an officer after the Battle of Loos. In November 1916 he was gazetted as a 2nd Lieutenant and sent to join the Royal Berkshire Regiment. John Angus was killed in action during an attack on Passchendaele Ridge on 22 August 1917. His body was never found. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium and the Staffin War Memorial.

These coins had been sorted into country of origin prior to deposit. They were originally stored in four Springbok brand tobacco bags. Some further sorting of previously unidentified coins has been done during cataloguing.
