Catmose College’s governing body met on 17 November and agreed a draft admissions policy for September 2013 on which it would like to consult. Following feedback received from our partner primary school, Catmose Primary, would like to consult on retaining this school as a feeder school to recognise the particular link we have with the children who attend there; as a result of this we have amended the draft policy. In reviewing the policy we have taken account of the new draft admissions code which can be found on the DFE website.

In writing the new policy the governors were mindful that there has been increasing pressure on places for children to attend the College and that, with the proposed new housing in Oakham, this is likely to continue.  The new policy is designed to continue to prioritise those students who have a statement of SEN, or are looked after and to build on the excellent relationship between staff, students and parents which are so characteristic of our school.

In this respect the Governors have agreed the following additional criteria:

Where there is already a sibling at the College and the sibling will either still be at the College or attended the College within the last five years at the time of admission.

Continued Overleaf

Where there is already a sibling at the College and the sibling will either still be at the College or attended the College within the last five years at the time of admission.

This criteria has been strengthened over the previous sibling preference, allowing priority even if the sibling has left the College within the last five years.  This criteria is designed to protect the excellent relationships the College has developed with our existing parents and ensure that any additional children are also able to benefit from them.

A child of staff at the College.

This is a new criteria which is to recognise the crucial role our staff have in ensuring that Catmose College continues to be an excellent place in which to be educated. This criterion will help ensure that we are able to recruit and retain the highest quality staff and recognise the excellent contribution they make to the College community.

Children who live nearest the school by distance.

This final criterion the governors believe is the fairest way to allocate remaining places, prioritising those who live closest to the School. This will ensure that going forward we remain the community college for Oakham and the surrounding villages we always have been. It also removes the unfairness that the old catchment brought, for example, Cottesmore, a village just outside of Oakham was not catchment.

This is a summary of the new draft policy and should only be used as general guidance; it should not be used to determine whether your child would be eligible for a place or not. Please read the full policy which is available from the parents’ section of our website or by hardcopy from the College.Where there is already a sibling at the College and the sibling will either still be at the College or attended the College within the last five years at the time of admission.

CATMOSE PRIMARY ACADEMY CONVERSION

The Governing Body of CATMOSE PRIMARY has passed a resolution to pursue conversion to academy status.

The School, working closely with the College has made significant improvements in the twelve months since their Ofsted inspection; an external consultant recently rated the School as Good with Outstanding features.  The primary governors believe that the opportunities offered through academy status will allow further improvement, offering a better service to the children and increasing the opportunities for staff.

The partnership with Catmose College has had a significant impact on the quality of provision at Catmose Primary.  In particular:* Kelly Jackson, Vice Principal has been able to focus on school improvement, introducing a 3I curriculum, a house system and setting arrangements;  * the federation team has taken responsibility for site management, catering, ICT, financial and HR services;  * there has been significant investment in the fabric of the School’s building, improving the roof, electrical infrastructure and importantly the classroom environment.  This has included decorating all of the classrooms, building an outside canopy for Key Stage 1 and enhancing the ICT facilities across the School;  * the children of Catmose Primary regularly use the College’s facilities, for example to record the Christmas CD and on a weekly basis, use the federation mini-bus;* the pupils have also benefitted from specialist sport and art teachers who teach at Catmose Primary on a weekly basis.

It is due to the success of this partnership that the Governing Body is proposing to formalise the federation by joining with Catmose College in a multi-academy trust, called Catmose Federation, which will be responsible for both the secondary and primary schools.  This form of academy status would be significantly more efficient in the way in which we deploy staff and resources to the benefit of both Schools, due to the single trust and therefore employer status of the Federation.

These opportunities would be evident through the greater freedoms to manage our budget and create a curriculum that allows all children to make outstanding progress and achieve excellent outcomes. The specific benefits for our children

Can I please remind parents that one of the most important things you can do for your child is to make sure that he or she attends College regularly and on time. Student absences adversely affects their progress; it is often difficult for students to catch up with work as they miss out on the interaction with the teacher and other students. Public examinations are now spread across the year and it is vital to students’ success that they not only attend the exam but are also well prepared and fully informed. Parents of students in years 10 and 11 are reminded that holidays during term time will be refused unless these are exceptional circumstances. If your child is absent from College through illness, parents should contact the College and ensure that an absence note, signed and dated, is handed to the form tutor when your child returns to College. A written note is always required. It is only myself, as the Principal, who can authorise any student’s absence from college. If it is unavoidable that you take your child on holiday during term time, you must complete the request form found on the policy for authorised absences from College. This can be downloaded from the website or collected from Client Services.

will be wide-ranging.  For example, the ability to target our own finances would allow us to focus on specific areas as part of a long term strategic plan, for example gifted and talented provision and SEN support.  We also believe that the added funding would allow us to protect and preserve the high quality teaching and pastoral care that is such a significant part of our provision.

Many things will not change however; the School would retain its own local Governing Body, the name of the School would remain the same, the staff would remain the same and the children would remain the same. The College would similalry not be affected.

The friendly, welcoming ethos of the Primary School and its commitment to ensure that children are all given opportunities to reach their potential would continue to be our first priority.  We would continue to provide the excellent education for all our children but would use our new freedoms to seek further ways to enhance what we offer.  This is an excellent opportunity to take a significant step forward in our development.

The closing date for the Governing Body to consider responses is 4:00 PM FRIDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2012.

PARENT PAY

Can parents please ensure that their child has sufficient money credited to their account to purchase food at break and lunchtime. I am afraid it is not possible for the finance office to credit individual amounts for each student. If you have a problem accessing the internet you can purchase a PayPoint card which can be ‘topped up’ at local PayPoint outlets. If you have any problems crediting money to your account or wish to discuss the PayPoint card, please contact Jo Morris at the College by ‘phone or email ([email protected]).

DRAMA - EXTRA CURRICULAR

Last term we held our annual Christmas concert in All Saints Church in Oakham. The event was a great success and the church was full to capacity.

The evening started with a wonderful performance by the chamber choir who sang a rendition of ‘Panis Angelicus’. Other highlights during the evening included the jazz band, flute and reed ensembles, a recorder consort, a clarinet trio and the junior choir. There was also a fantastic new take on the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ which was performed as a drama piece by our year 7 and 8 students.

The programme of events also showcased the College orchestra who played popular and well known Christmas carols which involved audience participation. Rosie Wilkinson, year 7 student, performed a beautiful solo piece of a verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’.

The evening ended with a fun and uplifting song by a band which involved both students and staff, followed by a finale of everyone singing ‘Hark the Herald Angels’.

Congratulations go to the students and staff who took part in the concert, especially to Mr Sammy and Mrs Mitchell for all their hard work, in putting together such a wonderful event.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

LOCKERS

Each student is allocated a locker in which to leave their personal belongings during lessons. We recommend that students should bring with them a small padlock in order to secure their belongings or we can offer a suitable one for sale for £3 from the library. Students should keep their locker key safe and report to Client Services if the key is lost.

You need to order your books by Wednesday 25 January 2012. After that date, I’ll confirm that all orders are in and the books will be delivered to College for me to hand out in class. For every £1 you spend 20p goes back to our school to spend on much-needed books for our library!

Take a look at what’s on offer here http://clubs-school.scholastic.co.uk/vale-of-catmose – there are some great bargains with books costing as little as £1.99!

Overdue Library BooksThis week, all form tutors have received a list of all the books that their form have overdue. Please can you have a look at home to see if your child has any library books that they may have forgotten about? If they do have an overdue book, they will not be able to borrow equipment from the library. Also, if year 11s have overdue books, come June they will not be able to purchase prom tickets as this is deemed as a debt to the College. Any problems, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

(A showcase of UK and international educational technology products, resources and best practice)

On Saturday14 January, myself, Rohan, Anni and Georgia went to Olympia in London to the BETT show. Our day started at Oakham Station at 7:30am as we took a train from Oakham to Peterborough and then from Peterborough to London Kings Cross. After travelling the London Underground and getting a taxi to Olympia we made it to the show.

We got our entry tickets for the show and we were amazed at the size of the building. We walked through the two big exhibition rooms to get to the Toshiba stand where I was doing a Prezi (a presentation using Prezi software) about how we use technology at Catmose College.

As I got ready to present my prezi, Anni, Georgia and Rohan rimmed the exhibition hall for freebies.

Once I presented my Prezi presentation on ‘How Catmose College uses technology in our college’, we all met Mark Riches, the CEO of Radiowaves, to interview him about Radiowave's future and what it was like for Radiowaves to win their second BETT award. Their 2012 award was for ICT company of the year, with a turnover of under 1 million pounds.

After a quick break for lunch we had a look around the exhibition hall, collected some more information and freebies, and then we interviewed, Radiowaves partner, Crazy talk about what they were showing at the exhibition. We were lucky to receive a free copy of their software.

Then we got ready for our presentation about ‘How we embedded social media into the curriculum at Catmose College’. We explained about our use of Radiowaves, which is a safe, full moderated social network especially designed for schools, as well as how we use Twitter and Facebook as communication tools. We were asked lots of questions about how we use Radiowaves and if we would prefer to use Facebook for school work. We did say that we preferred Radiowaves for school work as this keeps our personal Facebook lives separate from our Radiowaves school lives.

After our presentation we took a taxi and then got onto the tube to Kings Cross. From Kings Cross to Peterborough and Peterborough to Oakham.

What a successful but tiring day. We never realised that there were so many different technological suppliers for education and the different ways that technology can be used to teach us and making our learning more enjoyable and motivating.
