Many of you remember our pastoral seminarian from last year, Joshua Hare. Josh spent nearly 9 months present here at St. Lawrence involved in many ministries. In August he returned for his penultimate year of seminary formation. That year includes the ordination to the transitional diaconate.

It is a little known fact that all priests are first ordained as deacons. In the older rites of the Church the priest would actually continue to wear the vestments of the deacon underneath the priestly vestments. This was to signify that the priest is first and foremost called to be the servant of his community. Unlike permanent deacons though, i.e. Deacon Cris, Deacon Julio and Deacon Greg, the priest's time in the diaconate is a time of transitioning to the priestly life.

Interestingly the ordination to the transitional diaconate is often experienced as the more stressful of ordinations. It is in the ordination to the transitional diaconate that the seminarian first makes the promises which he will strive to fulfill the rest of his life. He promises: respect and obedience to his Bishop, devotion to the spiritual life and the faithful praying of the liturgy of the hours, and to live out a life of chaste celibacy. In the ordination he also lies prostrate during the praying of the litany of saints. This action, although it may appear they are taking a nap (as a young one thought at my ordination) signifies that they have died to themselves and laid down their lives for Jesus Christ and the service of His bride the Church. They are also handed the "tool of their trade", the book of the Gospels. This is when they hear the words found at the beginning of this article. Thus the ordination to the transitional diaconate is experienced as the "leap of faith" while priestly ordination is the confirmation of what has been lived out in diaconate.

Josh was ordained along with another seminarian from our diocese, Anthony Astrab. They will both be assigned to a parish for this upcoming summer in our diocese. When they return to seminary for their final year of priestly formation they will work in parishes on the weekend. There they will primarily minister in the parish activities, preach and baptize.

It is my hope that we keep both of these fine men in our daily prayers as they live out the promises which they have made. We pray that they may be faithful heralds: that they believe, teach and practice.

Pope Francis has Granted an Indulgence to the Faithful during the 50th Anniversary of the

Diocese of St. Petersburg

What is an indulgence?

“A remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.” – (Catechism of the Catholic Church (No. 1471). Indulgences may be applied to one’s self or the dead.

Overview:

As with many jubilee years, Pope Francis has instructed that a special plenary indulgence be available for the faithful throughout 2018 (January 1, 2018- December 31, 2018) for the 50th Anniversary of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. The faithful who commit to a complete detachment of sin may follow the steps below to receive this indulgence.

For Able-Bodied Catholics:

(First of a Three-Part Series)

Students were asked to reflect on the following:

“You are a disciple of Jesus and have been locked in the Upper Room since the Crucifixion.

It is now Sunday night. You look up and see Jesus looking at you. He begins to come toward

you. What are you feeling? What will you say to Je-sus? How will this encounter change

your life?”

“A few days ago I saw my savior die, ” I thought, I took him for granted. I thought he would always be

here on earth with us. I burst into tears. I look up and see Jesus. I can’t believe it is him! A few

minutes later I feel a hand on my shoulder. I look up and he asks me, “Do you not believe I am here? I

will always be with you.” Everyone else looked up and saw Jesus. I answered, “My Lord…” But I didn’t know what to say. Mary was overjoyed

because Jesus was there with us! We were scared. He blessed us and gave us the strength and courage

to go tell everyone about the Good News of God!

Muchos de ustedes recuerdan a nuestro seminarista pastoral del año pasado, Joshua Hare. Josh pasó casi 9 meses presente aquí en San Lorenzo involucrado en muchos ministerios. En agosto regresó para su penúltimo año de formación en seminario. Ese año incluye la ordenación al diaconado de transición.

Es un hecho poco conocido que todos los sacerdotes son ordenados primero como diáconos. En los ritos más antiguos de la Iglesia, el sacerdote continuaba usando las vestiduras del diácono debajo de las vestimentas sacerdotales. Esto era para indicar que el sacerdote, ante todo, es llamado a ser el servidor de su comunidad. Sin embargo, a diferencia de los diáconos permanentes, es decir, como el Diácono Cris, el Diácono Julio y el Diácono Greg, el tiempo del sacerdote en el diaconato es un tiempo de transición a la vida sacerdotal.

Curiosamente, la ordenación al diaconato de transición a menudo se experimenta como la más estresante de las ordenaciones. Josh fue ordenado junto a otro seminarista de nuestra diócesis, Anthony Astrab. Ambos serán asignados a una parroquia para este próximo verano en nuestra diócesis. Cuando regresen al seminario para su último año de formación sacerdotal, trabajarán en las parroquias el fin de semana. Allí ministrarán principalmente en las actividades parroquiales, predicarán y bautizarán.

Reflexión sobre el Santo Evangelio según San Juan 10, 11-18.

Hoy el evangelista nos acerca la figura de Jesús como un pastor que ama, cuida y protege a sus ovejas y las conoce una a una.

La figura del pastor es tierna, acogedora, cercana. Se preocupa por la oveja que se pierde. A la que por avatares de la vida anda descarriada, la busca, le da su tiempo y al final la atrae hacia el rebaño.

Jesús toma como referencia al pastor que cuando ve en peligro a la oveja, va y le ayuda, no la abandona a su suerte. Quizás nosotros no somos muy conscientes de que Jesús es Buen Pastor, ante la crisis mundial que estamos sufriendo y de forma particular en nuestra tierra porque, como siempre, esperamos que nos vengan a resolver los problemas. Sin embargo, Él como el pastor que ama y quiere a sus ovejas, sabe que Dios nos ha ofrecido un mundo habitable, con lo necesario para todos, pero también nosotros somos responsables de que el mundo siga siendo habitable para todos.

Jesús nos llama a todos como supremo Pastor, para que comprendamos que debemos fomentar la hermandad, la unidad, la paz, alejarnos de destruir por destruir o despojar a los demás para nosotros tener más.

Jesús nos marca el camino a seguir, por donde las ovejas debemos caminar, a pesar de ello, se vuelve y nos deja perdidos, quizás deje unos momentos a aquellas que saben a dónde van, pero al final reúne al redil completo.

Hace poco hemos celebrado su resurrección, lo hemos visto, hemos creído en Él, ¿seguimos

creyendo? ¿Seremos capaces de ser pastores en aquellos sitios donde nos encontramos? ¿Nos expondremos al peligro por salvar a alguien que se aleja del camino? Reflexionemos sobre esto.

En muchas partes del mundo hoy celebramos también el día del sacerdote, porque él es también un buen pastor que todos nosotros, en las más diversas circunstancias de la vida, hemos tenido a nuestro lado a santos sacerdotes que nos han ayudado a mantenernos en pie, a pesar de las dificultades. Y en buena parte a ellos les debemos la perseverancia en nuestra fe y en nuestra vocación cristiana.

La figura de sacerdotes ha dejado una huella indeleble en nuestra existencia porque han sabido ser, como Cristo, "buenos pastores". Pastores, sí; y también buenos, como auténticos padres, amigos y compañeros de la vida.

Pidámosle a Cristo Resucitado que nos permita tener un momento intimo con El, porque somos esas ovejas que pierden fácilmente el rumbo si no estamos en comunicación permanente con su pastor, queremos ser parte de su rebaño, muéstranos el camino a seguir.

1. ¿Qué enseña la Iglesia sobre la familia?

La Iglesia enseña que la familia es uno de los bienes más preciosos de la humanidad.

2. ¿Por qué es un bien tan precioso?

La familia es un don tan precioso porque forma parte del plan de Dios para que todas las personas puedan nacer y desarrollarse en una comunidad de amor, ser buenos hijos de Dios en este mundo y participar en la vida futura del Reino de los Cielos: Dios ha querido que los hombres, formando la familia, colaboren con Él en esa tarea.

3. ¿Dónde están revelados los planes de Dios sobre el matrimonio y la familia?

En la Sagrada Escritura -la Biblia-, se narra la creación del primer hombre y de la primera mujer: Dios los creó a su imagen y semejanza; los hizo varón y mujer, los bendijo y les mandó crecer y multiplicarse para poblar la tierra (cf. Gen 1,27). Y para que esto fuera posible de un modo verdaderamente humano, Dios mandó que el hombre y la mujer se unieran para formar la comunidad de vida y amor que es el matrimonio (cf. Gn 2,19-24).

4. ¿Qué beneficios trae formar una familia como Dios manda?

Cuando las familias se forman según la voluntad de Dios, son fuertes, sanas y felices; hacen posible la promoción humana y espiritual de sus miembros contribuyendo a la renovación de toda la sociedad y de la misma Iglesia.

5. ¿Cómo ayuda la Iglesia a los hombres para que conozcan el bien de la familia?

La Iglesia ofrece su ayuda a todos los hombres recordándoles cuál es el designio de Dios sobre la familia y el matrimonio. A los católicos corresponde de modo especial comprender y dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo en este campo.

6. ¿Cómo es posible realizar plenamente el proyecto de Dios sobre el matrimonio y la familia?

Sólo con la ayuda de la grada de Dios, viviendo de verdad el Evangelio, es posible realizar plenamente el proyecto de Dios sobre el matrimonio y la familia.

7. ¿Por qué hay tantas familias rotas, o con dificultades? ¿Por qué a veces parece tan difícil de cumplir la voluntad de Dios sobre el matrimonio?

Adán y Eva pecaron desobedeciendo a Dios y desde entonces todos los hombres nacen con el pecado original. Este pecado y los que comete cada persona hacen difícil conocer y cumplir la voluntad de Dios sobre el matrimonio. Por eso Jesucristo quiso venir al mundo: para redimirnos del pecado y para que pudiéramos vivir como hijos de Dios en esta vida y alcanzar el Cielo. Hace falta la luz del Evangelio y la gracia de Cristo para devolverle al hombre, y también al matrimonio y a la familia, su bondad y belleza originales.

8. ¿Qué consecuencias tiene para toda la sociedad no cumplir el plan de Dios sobre la familia y el matrimonio?

Cuando la infidelidad, el egoísmo y la irresponsabilidad de los padres respecto a los hijos son las normas de conducta, toda la sociedad se ve afectada por la corrupción, por la deshonestidad de costumbres y por la violencia.

9. ¿Cuál es la situación de la familia en nuestra sociedad?

Los cambios culturales de las últimas décadas han influido fuertemente en el concepto tradicional de la familia. Sin embargo, la familia es una institución natural dotada de una extraordinaria vitalidad, con gran capacidad de reacción y defensa. No todos

estos cambios han sido perjudiciales y por eso el panorama actual sobre la familia puede decirse que está compuesto de aspectos positivos y negativos.

10. ¿Qué aspectos positivos se notan en muchas familias?

El sentido cristiano de la vida ha influido para que en nuestra sociedad se promueva cada vez más: una conciencia más viva de la libertad y responsabilidad personales en el seno de las familias; el deseo de que las relaciones entre los esposos y de los padres con los hijos sean virtuosas; una gran preocupación por la dignidad de la mujer; una actitud más atenta a la paternidad y maternidad responsables; un mayor cuidado a la educación de los hijos; una mayor preocupación de las familias para relacionarse y ayudarse entre sí.

11. ¿Qué aspectos negativos encontramos en las familias de nuestro país?

Son muchos y todos ellos revelan las consecuencias que provoca el rechazo del amor de Dios por los hombres y mujeres de nuestra época. De modo resumido podemos señalar: una equivocada concepción de la independencia de los esposos; defectos en la autoridad y en la relación entre padres e hijos; dificultades para que la familia transmita los valores humanos y cristianos; creciente número de divorcios y de uniones no matrimoniales; el recurso fácil a la esterilización, al aborto y la extensión de una mentalidad antinatalista muy difundida entre los matrimonios; condiciones morales de miseria, inseguridad y materialismo; la emergencia silenciosa de gran número de niños de la calle fruto de la irresponsabilidad o de la incapacidad educativa de sus padres; gran cantidad de personas abandonadas por falta de familia estable y solidaria.

12. ¿Qué podemos hacer para que los signos negativos no prevalezcan?

La única solución verdaderamente eficaz es que cada hombre y cada mujer se esfuercen por vivir en sus familias las enseñanzas del Evangelio, con autenticidad. El sentido cristiano de la vida hará que siempre prevalezcan los signos positivos sobre los negativos, aunque éstos nunca falten.

13. ¿Jesucristo nos dio algún ejemplo especial sobre la familia?

Sí, porque Jesucristo nació en una familia ejemplar; Sus padres fueron José y María. Les obedeció en todo (cf. Lc 2,51) y aprendió de ellos a crecer como verdadero hombre. Así pues, la familia de Cristo es ejemplo y modelo para toda familia.

14. ¿Esas enseñanzas son válidas para la familia de nuestros días?

Los ejemplos de la Sagrada Familia alcanzan a los hombres de todas las épocas y culturas, porque el único modo de conseguir la realización personal y la de los seres amados es crear un hogar en donde la ternura, el respeto, la fidelidad, el trabajo, el servicio desinteresado sean las normas de vida.

15. ¿Quiénes deben sentirse responsables de fortalecer la institución familiar?

Cada hombre es responsable de una manera u otra de la sociedad en que vive, y por tanto de la institución familiar, que es su fundamento. Los casados, deben responder que la familia que han formado sea según el designio de Dios; los que permanecen solteros, deben cuidar de aquella en que nacieron.
