MAY 12, 2019: FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
The Good Shepherd
This fourth Sunday of Easter is also called “Good Shepherd Sunday.” For most of us today who live in or near our Weymouth Collaborative, we do not often see many shepherds herding their
sheep! While the language and images of a shepherd in the Gospel today can seem quite strange to us, they would have been immediately understood by those Jesus was speaking to 2,000 years ago in Galilee, as shepherds were part of daily life then for most people. Many of us have seen in
paintings of the artist’s view of Jesus the shepherd. Usually they picture a man with one sheep over his shoulders carrying it back to the others because it was lost. So what does the image of Jesus the shepherd mean for us today? While most all sheep probably look relatively alike to us,
the shepherd gets to know each of them individually, so that when a shepherd calls a sheep, the sheep recognizes the voice and responds since they know and trust the shepherd. The shepherd guides and protects the sheep; they go where he leads them. If a shepherd cares for his sheep with great love and devotion,
can you imagine how much more Jesus loves and cares for each of us? The Lord knows and loves each of us personally and intimately as individuals made in the image and likeness of God - we are not all the same to Jesus – we are unique! The Prophet Isaiah describes this image beautifully when we writes; “I have called you each by
name, you are mine, do not be afraid. You are precious to me and I love you.”
The invitation by Jesus to listen and follow Him is not forced. He invites each of us to listen to Him and follow Him freely – the choice is ours to respond to or not. Some respond promptly, while others may take their time responding to the call. But no matter how long it takes, Jesus will never stop calling us by name and will wait
until we respond. When we answer that call in the affirmative and follow Him we will experience the fullness of life – the fullness of his life! Remember Jesus came and lived among us, becoming fully human while remaining fully divine, suffered, died and rose from the dead so that we may live life to the full.
In 2013, Pope Francis called upon all priests to bring the healing power of God’s grace to everyone in need, to stay close to the marginalized and to be “shepherds living with the smell of the sheep.” We are blessed in our Archdiocese with many wonderful “smelly” priests! But I think we all can heed the advice of Pope Francis to smell a bit more like sheep by reaching out to those who are in need bringing the face of Christ to them each and
every day!
As we continue our Easter journey in anticipation of the celebration of Pentecost, may each of us realize how deeply and personally Jesus our Good Shepherd loves us. When Jesus calls us by name, may we answer in faith,
gratitude and gratefulness. May we follow where He leads, trusting in His never-ending peace, love, joy and healing!
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Again this week we hear of Paul and his companion Barnabas, speaking out boldly about the word of God. When
they met opposition among their ancestors, they took their message to the
Gentile communities. The key to evangelization is in
the last line of the passage: “The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.” Perhaps an odd reaction to being “expelled from the territory” but, not an odd reaction to sharing the story of God’s
love for us and Jesus’ gift of salvation. Try sharing the good news with another and notice the joy it gives you.
Immaculate Conception First Communicants are asked to wear their First Communion attire and participate in the Crowning of Our Lady after the 9:00am Mass on Sunday, May 12.
During the Month of May -- a month both named for and dedicated to Mary -- Catholics have long honored her by placing a crown on her image. “Bring Flowers of the Fairest”, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May…”

During the season of Easter, what a great time to remember our mothers and ask for God's blessing on
them. It is God who ultimately gave us life. It is through God's unselfish love, mirrored in our mothers' willingness to associate their love with God's and take
the risk to love us into life - that we have the opportunity for life. We remember our mothers this Mother's Day with much love.
Let us pray for each of them:
God our heavenly Father,
you give to each the ability to share your generative love.
Bless those women in our lives
who mirror your love and bring forth life
through their willingness to risk bringing new life into this world.
Help us to show them our gratitude for the gift of life and the gift of a mother's love. May our life-giving God continue to bless them
and show them his unfailing love. We ask this through Jesus, God's Son and our brother.
Amen.
