A MESSAGE FROM FR. MARC

Dear Faith Family,

Let’s make this an intentional Lent. The only way to do that is to have a plan at the start. As a faith communi-ty, we added to the events that are happening Weekly. The 5:30 PM, at St. Agnes, is a great opportunity. Consider attending one daily Mass during the week for Lent. Other

offerings are also available like Stations of the Cross and increased times for Confession. Our parish bulletin-magazine is a great resource to help you plan for a great Lent. I pray that one or more of these opportunities will be of service to you this Lent.

One practice I have taken on for several Lents is “20 minutes a day.” What I do is take 20 minutes every day to go through a room, a file, a closet, or anything else that needs going through and remove from my life those things that may be weighing me down or I simply don’t need. “When in doubt throw it out.” This works for me. It also helped my find my passport one year.

This week, I would like to highlight one program that we will be holding this holy season: “Faith In An Anxious World for H.S. Youth.” Scott Morin, our Evangelist to Youth and Young Adults, will be hosting the program at St. Camillus Lower Hall starting on March 18th, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, for four weeks. The younger members of our faith family are under great stress and many of them would benefit from a discussion around their spiritual and emotional health. This is a unique opportunity, provide to our faith family through a generous donation, to help us better serve our youth members. Please, encourage your teen or a teen you love to attend.

This is also a time for families to sign-up for FORMED.ORG. Formed.org has many resources for families and individuals to grow in their faith. One such resource is the library of movies that can be a great help in choosing a movie for family movie night. Formed .org is free to our parishioner with the following code: FJ47GD. Check it out. Peace and Blessings, Fr. Marc

SAINT AGNES MUSIC NOTES Why Preludes and Postludes? By definition, they are simply musical selections or voluntaries that occur before and after the mass or worship service. To look more closely at them, one finds that the Prelude is not just a tune or musical piece that is played to take up time before the mass, but rather it is carefully selected to address a

particular thought or prayer of the day or season; a meditative moment before the mass itself begins; hopefully setting the tone of worship for that liturgy. The Postlude is often more joyous and moving as we exit the mass, it is meant to send the faithful out from worship and extend an uplifting feeling of joy and purpose. A sort of musical exclamation point at the end of the mass. As church musicians, music in worship is never about performance, but about an offering of praise, thanksgiving, penitence, or petition to God. Corporate worship is one of the most important things

we do as church-going Christians. It is a time of sacred togetherness in which we pray, sing, listen, commune, and learn among other things. For me, this is what makes offering and leading music in worship a very holy and sacred thing.

* * * Our Mass music will change during the Lenten season but until then we will continue to use the settings of the Mass parts: Glory to God, Holy, Holy, and Lamb of God, from the Mass of the Resurrection. They can be found in the Breaking Bread Hymnal beginning at number 850. We continue to sing Memorial Acclamation number 11 and the Amen from the Chant Mass as well as the Lord’s Prayer when it is intoned by the priest. These are found in the order of the Mass at the front of the hymnal. Please lend your voice to our liturgy and join the singing of the hymns and the Mass.

He who sings prays twice!

DISTRIBUTION OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD AT MASS Given recent reports from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the CDC, the Office of Divine Worship is recommending that all parishes, shrines and chapels within the Archdiocese refrain from distributing the Precious Blood to the faithful until further notice. In our parishes due to high numbers of people with gluten sensitivities we will distribute the precious blood in a limited way. Please, if you have a cold or flu refrain from receiving from the cup or shaking hands at the sign of peace. It is all of our

responsibility to ensure a healthy worship environment.

focused teaching, and growing together in small group community through discussion and accountability. The teachings are not academic, rather they are focused on helping people to develop a lifestyle of living for Jesus our Lord.

GOSPEL REFLECTION From a very early age, we are encouraged to do what we told and asked. When we are young we listen to and learn from our parents. We follow their example and do what they asked us to do. This continues when

we go to school. The teacher asks to behave in a certain way and expects to follow the rules of the class and the school. There are rules of the road to help us to drive safely with care and concern for other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Religion has rules too. However there is always danger that the letter of the law becomes important than the spirit of the law. We know from the gospels that Jesus had many arguments with the Pharisees and Sadducees. These were two groups who controlled and organized all the rites and rituals of the Jewish religion. However, Jesus said to the people, ‘Do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on your shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they!’ Jesus tells this because they gave importance to the letter of the law than the spirit of the law. On another occasion, when the Sadducees asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind and you must love your neighbors as yourself.’ These words from Jesus are powerful and relevant today. We can easily become like the Pharisees and the Sadducees. We can become slaves to the law of the gospel and miss what its message and the importance of the gospel. Pope Francis tells, ‘People rigidly bound to the law suffer pain, pride and often live a double life. God’s laws are not meant to make us slaves but to make us free, to make us children of God. God prefers mercy, tenderness, goodness and humility. May the Lord teach each of us to walk within the Lord’s laws with these ways.’

Fr. Robert Sahayaraj, OCD

Jesus is not asking us to break the law, particularly the law of the gospel. He is calling us to go beyond the letter of the law and to deepen our appreciation of the message of the gospel. The good news of the gospel is more a matter of the heart than it is matter of the head, the spirit than the letter. May we love the Lord, ourselves and our neighbors with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE Do you know how “40 Days for Life” began? It started modestly-- just a small group of Christians gathered around a table for an hour of prayer. It has grown into the largest international pro-life mobilization in history, a movement of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils, and community outreach that has

spread lifesaving hope around the world. Every baby saved, every life transformed, every abortion facility closed is an amazing story. Read the inspiring story in the book, “40 Days for Life, Discover What God Has Done—Imagine What He Can Do.”

TODAY’S YOUNG PEOPLE ARE ANXIOUS - THEY’RE NOT ALONE

Anxiety and depression are on the rise, dominating the ways young people talk about their generation. While leaders and parents are becoming more aware of these problems, we often aren’t sure how to respond. We know that parents and church leaders may know when young people are hurting, but aren’t talking to one another about it. These gatherings will help open channels of communication between young people and their peers, their parents, and the church. Together our group will reflect on New Testament stories, watch Jesus enter into anxious situations with his disciples, and explore:

Life in an anxious world— See and name the pressure that builds in and around us.

Life in a relational world—Build a circle of support for both good times and bad.

Life in a hurting world—Know when our feelings become more than we can handle on our own.

Life in a hopeful world—Recognize God at work in our anxious world.

Saint Agnes' 8th Grade Civics class is organizing a sock drive for the homeless. We are looking for wool or synthetic socks and sock liners of any size. COLLABORATIVE NEWS

OUR PASTORAL PLAN The Catholic Parishes of Arlington will be writing our Pastoral Plan composed according to Disciples in Mission, the Archdiocese of Boston’s response to the Holy Father’s call to embrace the New Evangelization. The process will begin with combined Parish Pastoral Councils meeting in February to review the information gathered from the Convocation. We will then assign a writing team of approximately a dozen parishioners representing both parishes. The writing team will meet to create the Pastoral Plan to be presented as a draft. Following the draft we will finalize the plan to be presented to Cardinal Sean in the early spring/summer. Learn more here: https://disciplesinmission.com/

BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR DREAM EVENT FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

In the New Year and during Lent, we often take time to reflect on our lives and all that has happened. This past year we held a Dream Event on December 13th to help us all start dreaming again for ourselves and our parish. Whether or not you were able to make it that night, we want you to dream - it's one of the greatest gifts God has given us! Take a look at some of the follow up opportunities below: ● EMAIL PROGRAM SIGNUPS: “BEST LENT EVER” ● JOURNAL DISTRIBUTION: “BEST LENT EVER” ● BOOK EVENT: “REDISCOVER THE SAINTS” ● HIGH SCHOOL GROUP: “FAITH IN AN ANXIOUS WORLD” ● YOUNG ADULT GATHERINGS: “THEOLOGY ON TAP”

● MEN’S GATHERING: “ARLINGTON MEN’S CONFERENCE”

LENTEN CATHOLIC MEN’S CONFERENCE | CATHOLIC PARISHES OF ARLINGTON

The

Strength. Freedom. Purpose.

Why a men’s conference? God made men for authentic community. There are so many awesome men in this collaborative. Each of our lives would be richer if we knew more of the men in this community. Who will be there? We expect men of all ages, from seniors to teenagers. We expect men who go to Mass every day, many who go each Sunday, and some who have been waiting years to set foot in a Catholic Church again. All men are welcome. We expect there will be plumbers, bankers, carpenters, cops, firefighters, priests, tradesmen, teachers, salesmen, retirees, accountants, lawyers, medical professionals, businessmen, government workers, students, and guys in transition between roles. What does God have in store for you in 2020? What does God desire from the men of our collaborative this year? Come, see and be part of this new initiative for men on March 21st. Invite any man you want to spend time with that day (brothers, fathers, sons, friends, neighbors) – they don’t need to be a parishioner. This is a 4.5 hour commitment. No strings. No pressure. You can get your ticket today and find out more information at cparl.org/men. To volunteer to serve on the invite team, hospitality team or prayer team, please email Scot at [email protected]. Tickets are free - this might be best money you never spent to become more of the strong, free, purpose-driven man God created you to be.
