Ascension of the Lord - Year A

Catholic Parish of St Canice We acknowledge the Gadigal people, the traditional custodians on whose land this Church was built.

No Other Plans

According to a very old legend, and all legends that persist speak truth, the

angel Gabriel met Jesus Christ at the gates of heaven after his Ascension.

The angel welcomed him enthusiastically and congratulated him on the

great salvation that he had achieved by his life and death on earth.

But the Lord Jesus only said, ‘Yes.’

‘What plans have you made for carrying on the work? How are we all to

know what you have done?’ asked Gabriel.

‘I left Peter and James

and John and Martha and

Mary to tell their friends,

their friends to tell their

friends, till all the world

should know.’

‘But, Lord Jesus,’ said

Gabriel, ‘suppose Peter is

too busy with the nets, or

Martha with the

housework, or the friends

they tell are too occupied,

and forget to tell their

friends - what then?’

The Lord Jesus did not

answer all at once; then

he said in a quiet

reassuring voice: ‘I have

not made any other plans.

I am counting on them.’

Entrance Antiphon

You kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; praise the Lord, who ascends above the highest heavens; his majesty and might are in

the skies, alleluia.

Entrance Hymn: No 390 (Gather) Hail, Redeemer, King Divine

Opening Prayer

O God, whose Son today ascended to the heavens as the Apostles looked on, grant, we pray, that, in accordance with his prom-

ise, we may be worthy for him to live with us always on earth, and we with him in heaven. Who lives and reigns with you in the

unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First Reading: Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to

heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented

himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. "This," he said,

"is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from

now." So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He

replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power

when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends

of the earth." When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he

was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee,

why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same

way as you saw him go into heaven." The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 46:2-3. 6-9

God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

Second Reading: Ephesians 1:17-23

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to

know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are

the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe,

according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated

him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that

is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head

over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

The word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation: Matthew 28:19.20

Alleluia, alleluia! Go and teach all people my gospel. I am with you always, until the end of the world. Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped

him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go

therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and

teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. "And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Offertory Hymn: No 401 (Gather) Be Still and Know

Communion Antiphon

Christ, offering a single sacrifice for sins, is seated for ever at God's right hand, alleluia.

Reflection Hymn: No 422 (Gather) Glory be to God in Heaven

Reminder - Heart and Hand 2 Concert THIS WEEKEND

RIP Anne Hocking: Sad news this week that Anne Hocking has died at the age of 98. Anne had been a

member of our parish since the second world war when she moved here from Melbourne with her new husband. Anne lived nearby and was very active in the life of St Canice, working to support the school, the soup kitchen and volunteering in the office. After a stroke she was confined to her home and then went to the Presbyterian hospital

nearby where she died. Her requiem will be this Tuesday at St Canice’s at 10am. May she rest in peace.

St Canice's Vinnies Conference urgent call for extra volunteers It's been a while since we last let you know what our Parish Vinnies Conference has been up to. We are still regularly visiting those in need in the local boarding houses, public hous-ing and Gorman House drug rehab unit, and in fact we have seen a recent upsurge in requests for help. At the moment we have two regular members and one person who kind-ly helps us out. However, for family reasons, that person has had to stand down for a while, and Bill, our President, is soon going overseas on an extended visit to Ireland. I (Mick) will soon be the last man standing! This will see us in a crisis situation within a fairly short time. Consequently, any extra volunteers (no matter how occasional) would be a great help to our Conference and to those we visit.

We visit in pairs and give food vouchers, arrange furniture, white goods, clothing and payments for medications (at Crest Pharmacy) if necessary, and lend a sympathetic and non-judgemental ear! These visits are all in the local area, and usually take between ten and twenty minutes each. We generally have between one and three visits a week, mostly these days to single isolated men and women. Bill and I visit after the 8.30 Mass on Sunday morning, but that is negotiable. The other crucial work we do is to conduct a BBQ every second Sunday (for example this week-end) at Gorman House, St Vincent's Hospital Drug rehab unit, from 12pm. We are also urgently seeking volunteers for this activity.

If you are interested in being involved in either or both of these activities, please contact the Conference Secretary,

Mick McIntyre, on 0414853650 or at: [email protected]

And don't forget to visit the parish garage sale. Bill, with help from Jess and Aaron, has been doing wonderful work there from Thursday to Saturday, and you can always get a bargain which also benefits our church. God bless and thanks so much for your ongoing support.

Congratulations to our First Communicants

Last Wednesday evening the children preparing for their First Holy Communion celebrated Reconciliation for the

first time.

We keep the children and their families in our prayers as they continue their preparation for

First Holy Communion on the 18th June.

We also thank Helen Campbell and Bronywn Clulow for their time and gentle guidance

throughout the program.
