Mt 5:3-12: The Beatitudes

1. v3Happy are the poor in spirit, because belonging to them is the Kingdom of Heaven.

2. v4Happy are those who mourn, because they will be comforted.

3. v5Happy are the gentle because they will inherit the earth.4. v6Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

6 μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες τὴν δικαιοσύνην,

ὅτι αὐτοὶ χορτασθήσονται.

Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness because they will be filled.

Righteousness Orientation

1. Being hungry and thirsty means that we have an appetite for righteousness.

2. The principle is that we are supposed to want what God wants.

3. Notice the hunger and thirst is not for our own self-righteousness but for God’s righteousness.

4. The sad fact is that we do not naturally desire God’s desires, but they must be developed in us.

5. Jesus tells us here what we should want, and that is God’s perfect righteousness.

6. This is the key to the entire Sermon on the Mount and much of the Word of God.

7. How can I hunger and thirst for righteousness? How can I develop this appetite?
