Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:38-48

Imitate God’s Holiness

Last week we shared a reflection with

you about anger. Our anger comes from

thoughts about being hurt or offended by

another. Often, the quick response to being

hurt is to lash out with angry words or ac-

tions. But do thoughts have to result in an-

ger; is there a better choice?

In today’s reading, Jesus shows us that

letting our thoughts turn to angry words and

actions is the opposite of what he wants us to do. In fact, he

says, “Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute

you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father . . . For

if you love those who love you what recompense [or reward]

will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? . . . So

be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

So, the perfect response to being hurt is turning instead to

love, to forgiveness, and to prayer for the person who hurt or

offended us. Jesus says, don’t be like the others who can

only love those who love them. As Christians, we are to love

all others, including the difficult.

This week we come together for Ash Wednesday services

all over the world. It is the first day of Lent as we begin a spe-

cial 40-day journey. Jesus prayed and fasted in the desert

where he was tempted by Satan for 40 days. We begin Lent

with the desire to become more like Jesus, so we “go into the

desert” with him during this time. In the desert, we look at

our life to see what must change so that we might better imi-

tate God’s holiness and love. Sometimes it requires we let go

of old ways of reacting to things—like having thoughts that

someone hurt us and then getting angry and refusing to for-

give them. This kind of thinking ensures we will have

“enemies”. Instead, Jesus says to pray for those who hurt us.

When we truly pray for others, it is difficult to be angry with

them, and as we pray compassion begins to form in our

hearts.

Here is an idea for Lent to help all of us with this special

way of loving. As a family, place a basket on your dining table

and include in the basket slips of paper that have the name

of someone who hurt you recently or even a long time ago.

Then daily pray for the person whose name you wrote on the

slip of paper, plus pray for the people your family members

wrote on their slips. Close your prayer by asking God to for-

give you for those that you may have hurt. After 14 days, dis-

cuss with your family how it feels to pray for those who hurt

you; do this again at the end of 40 days. As one great big

Parish family, let’s all fast from anger and pray for those who

have hurt us . . . and for those we have hurt.
