Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2021

Respect Life Homily…

Since the Respect Life theme for January is the Unborn and an end to

abortions on demand in our country, I thought it would be good to print

the homily I gave a week ago at Mass on that subject so that all of you

could read it. Let us continually remember to pray for the souls of the

many aborted babies over these 48 years and for any woman

contemplating an abortion for a change of heart.

Through the great efforts of the Knights of Columbus in Missouri over

these past few years and their purchase of a van equipped with the latest

ultrasound machines and its availability to women in high demographic

areas of abortions in the State, every abortion clinic in Missouri has been

closed except one - the Planned Parent clinic on Forest Park Boulevard in

St. Louis. With a conservative Supreme Court now in place in

Washington, D.C., there is a chance that abortions on demand in States

throughout the country may be more limited or eliminated completely.

Our prayers and efforts must continue.

A Homily…

“A high school commencement speaker once told the anxious graduates,

“I wish you discontent.” He paused long and hard…watching the

squirming of the graduates, and their parents, and the faculty. He went

on to explain. Discontent is the opposite of Complacency. Discontent

keeps us on our toes, keeps us listening and alert. Complacency lulls us

into an acceptance of the way things are, into a tolerance for the evils

around us. Complacency cripples us. Most of all, complacency blinds us

to Christ. It prevents our ears from listening to the call for constant

conversion.

In modern history, at least, there are two great examples of complacency:

The first occurred in 1938 in Germany just as Adolf Hitler was rising to

power and beginning his crack-down of the Jews. It was a November

night, now referred to in history as Krystalnacht (the night of the broken

glass). Hitler wanted to know just how far he could go with the Jews and

the German people. So he instructed his SS troops to go and break the

windows of the Jewish businesses, and synagogues and Jewish homes

throughout Germany. Some went even further and set buildings on fire.

The Result: Nothing! Complacency and that complacency led to Dachau,

and Auschwitz and the other concentration camps and the ultimate

extermination of 6 million Jews in Europe.

The other example is our nation’s attitude toward abortion. It is 48 years

now since the Supreme Court permitted the Constitutional right to an

abortion in the Roe v. Wade decision. In the years since, during which

48 million children have been aborted, the nation (us) has become LESS

outraged, not more. We have grown comfortable with the fact of

abortion. We have accepted it. We have moved on. Amazingly in 1992

when the Supreme Court upheld Roe vs. Wade, it gave as one of its

reasons for doing so because the nation had grown accustomed to

abortions on demand.

I know that I have grown complacent. There are no more letters to

Congressmen or Senators. I haven’t preached on the subject in a while. I

haven’t marched at the Planned Parent clinic on Forest Park Parkway in

two years.

Today’s first reading shows how Samuel, even as he slept, listened for

the voice of the Lord. And although he could not yet recognize that

voice, he did not let his sleep, his comfort prevent him from listening.

Our nation has allowed over these 48 years the decision of the Supreme

Court to lull us into a complacency, into a culture of death. Unlike

Samuel’s sleep, our sleep is preventing us from hearing and heeding

God’s voice.

In 1973, many warned that abortion does not liberate women, but, in fact,

hurts and destroys the dignity of women. Yet, we as a nation have been

sung to sleep by the empty promises of the Pro-choice movement. Now,

as we have witnessed, from the experiences of women who have had

abortions these past 48 years, there have been severe emotional and

psychological stress. Is it really making women free? Are we still

sleeping?

In 1973, many said that abortion would lead to infanticide. 25 years ago

those prophets were proven right when the then President of the U.S.,

Bill Clinton, insisted that infanticide, called Partial Birth Abortion, must

be allowed to continue in our country. Were we still sleeping in our

complacency? Now we must work to protect the Hyde Amendment from

disappearing (which bars the use of federal money to pay for an abortion

except to save the life of the woman or incest or rape. It is not a

permanent law and must be approved annually from Congress).

Our nation’s acceptance of abortion is due not so much to our evildoings

as we are not evil people but rather to our prevailing attitude of

complacency. Historian Edmund Burke once said: “The only thing

necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.”

The protection of human life cannot be just an isolated issue among

others in society. The right to life MUST be the basis of society, the

basis of all legislation and something from the heart and in our bones.

Once we grow complacent and are willing to see the dignity of the

human person as just another issue, we literally turn things upside down.

We forget the Gospel!!!!

In the Second Reading from Paul, there was a similar situation in

Corinth. The Corinthians had grown complacent in their actions, in their

moral conduct. Paul tries to awaken them from their comfortable

complacency and immoral way of life. His letter challenges them and us

to change, to wake up from our indifference, to change hearts - a major

way to eliminate abortions in our land.

We have the same challenge in our society, especially in regard to the

dignity of human life - in the violence in our country, the random

murders and senseless killings. In the City of St. Louis alone last year, a

city of only 300,000 people, there were 262 murders. According to a list

I saw on line, the City is listed as one of the 10 most dangerous cities in

the world because of violent crime. I am pretty complacent to that

statistic about human life. If I was a citizen of the City of Saint Louis, I

would want the mayoral candidates’ first effort/platform to be the

reduction of crime. Are we still sleeping?

We must challenge the mindset that sees a child as having dignity only

when it is wanted or an elderly person only when he or she is productive.

The gospel rouses the nation from its complacent sleep and asks us to

realize the basic dignity of all human life, the dignity of the human

person. When we stand up for all human life, we proclaim the gospel.

The gospel is an invitation to awake and discover the beautiful rights of

the human person to life. So realistically, what can we do? Maybe we

can be less violent in our speech, less vengeful, less threatening, less

wanting to even the score, less angry, less negative, less rage, less

treating people as inferior to ourselves, less belittling, less put downs,

less hurtful speech.

“Come and See” (the invitation of today’s gospel) the image and

likeness of God in all life.

“Come and See” the elderly, the homeless, the marginalized, the

prisoner, the embryo, the handicapped as a reflection of the grandeur of

God.

“Come and See” the unborn as a reflection of the very life and image of

God and their right to life and seek to change one heart at a time to

choose life (Knights of Columbus’ van with ultrasound equipment).

Mother Theresa said that “all prayer must begin with silence.” Why? So

that we can put ourselves into the presence of God and that we can hear

God speak to us – “Speak Lord, you servant is listening,” said Samuel

today in that first reading. That is our phrase of the day, too. And we

need silence to listen and we need silence to make something happen.

So the gospel wishes I offer to you today are: “I wish you discontent”

that you may be free from such complacency and listen to the voice of

God.”

Have a great week everyone! Be safe and stay healthy! I will see you

in church or on livestream.

Monsignor Jack 0822
