Youth Ministry has initiated a plan to welcome and support these students with the enthusiastic cooperation of the Spanish community here at St. Catherine’s. The first step was to invite them to the Spanish Mass on February 25 and a welcome dinner to follow. Our young people are now inviting all of us to join them in this effort. They are seeking volunteers who will bring food for this dinner—main dishes, side dishes, and desserts—but also to attend as a sign of support and welcome. Throughout this semester, we will be collecting donations from parishioners for the students to bring home with them and distribute in their communities to ensure they get to the people who need them. For this dinner, they are asking for donations of batteries or a monetary donation to cover the expenses of sending the supplies back with the students. HELP FOR PUERTO RICO

It has been more than four months since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, and the island is still recovering. Nearly one-third of their power utility customers are still without electricity, the island is financially unstable, and supplies that are being sent are not arriving at their destinations. In fact, just this week it was discovered that Puerto Rico received only 50,000 out of 30 million meals the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) contracted an outside agency to deliver. It is clear that Puerto Rico still needs a huge amount of help.

It can be hard for any one person to do anything of significance, but together we can make a difference. This past December our youth ministry group received a visit from Jorge Mojica Santiago, a graduate student at Cornell from Puerto Rico who shared some of his firsthand experiences. We later found out that Cornell was accepting 62 students for the semester from the University of Puerto Rico. This gives us an opportunity to support individual families and communities!

A signup link will be provided in the bulletin next week.

In addition to welcoming the students into our wonderful community, this is also an opportunity for each of us to help people in Puerto Rico. Throughout this semester, we will be collecting donations from parishioners for the students to bring home with them and distribute in their communities to ensure they get to the people who need them. For this dinner, they are asking for donations of batteries or a monetary donation to cover the expenses of sending the supplies back with the students. In the months to come they will continue to ask for specific donations that the students tell us are most needed in their communities.

Save February 25 on your calendar so you can come and welcome our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters!

DISCOVERING CHRIST This past week, the focus of our evening was on the question, “Why Does Jesus Matter?” The teaching ends with the following: We must answer the most important question Jesus ever asked his followers—“Who do you say I am?” It is something good for us all to ponder! For those participating, a reminder that we will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, and our menu for this week is a celebration of Fat Tuesday—pancakes, sausage, and other Fat Tuesday goodies!

ASH WEDNESDAY SUPPER As is our tradition, we will be hosting a Simple Soup Supper after the 5:45 p.m. Mass on Ash Wednesday,

BEYOND THE PLATE This weekend St. Catherine’s will host a dinner for 160 guests who will enjoy a five-course meal prepared by generous and wonderful local chefs—James Larounis from the Heights Restaurant, Sam Epps from Gola Osteria, David Skolfield from the Ithaca Country Club, Leslie Muhlhahn from Just Desserts, and our own Fr. Joe. Their generosity is matched by those individuals and businesses who sponsored this dinner, providing large donations to cover expenses so that we can raise over $20,000 to support the Ithaca MobilePack for Feed My Starving Children. This one night raises about one-third of all the money needed to host the MobilePack. We would like to thank our course and wine sponsors ($1,500): Jim and Kim Kirkwood; Rheonix (Greg Galvin); Travis Hyde Properties (Frost Travis and Chris Hyde); JCG Weath Advisory Group at Merrill Lynch (Julie Gorman); Cornell Pochily Investment Advisors, Inc. (Bob Pochily and Ezra Cornell); Lucente Homes (Rocco and Traudel Lucente); Northwestern Mutual (Jay and Vicky Williamson); Caren Baldini; Triad Foundation; Jennifer and Sean Whittaker; and Galvin Travel (Betsy Galvin). We also thank our Gold Sponsors ($1,000): Warren Real Estate (Bryan Warren); Bridges Cornell Heights (Elizabeth Ambrose); and Mary Berens and Paul Feeny. Additional thanks to our general sponsors: Allan VandeMark; Dawn and Mike Redlin; Duthie Orthondontics; P&C Fresh (Greg Young); and Triphammer Wine and Spirits (Julie Crowley). The impact that these individuals, foundations, and companies have on our community, and more important, on the poor of this world, is huge. We thank each of them for their generosity!

200 CLUB The fourteenth annual 200 Club to raise money for our brothers and sisters in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic, has launched! You can purchase a $100 ticket after all Masses this weekend, or in the Parish Office during the week. By purchasing a ticket, you will be eligible for weekly prizes, and you and 199 other people will help raise over $12,000!

LENTEN STATIONS OF THE CROSS We will not be holding formal Stations of the Cross during this Lenten season. Instead, we have booklets of the Stations with questions to reflect on and journal about. We will hand out the booklets on Ash Wednesday, and more will be available in the Church. The Church will be open until 9 p.m. on Fridays during Lent. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity for a personal experience of the Stations.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER—CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL So far, 205 parishioners have pledged a total of $41,625 toward our goal of $51,182 for the Catholic Ministries Appeal. That’s 81.3 percent of our goal! Please prayerfully consider giving to the CMA.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE From Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday, 40 Days for Life, a peaceful and prayerful campaign, takes place here in Ithaca. Forty Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the harm of abortion through the use of a three-point program: prayer and fasting, vigil watch, and community outreach. Please join us in peaceful vigil across from Planned Parenthood, 620 W. Seneca St., along the public right-of way, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. every day during Lent. Consider a one- or two-hour vigil weekly with your family, friends, or prayer group. For more information, and if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Trish Burgess at [email protected] or 757-876-3239.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are looking for volunteers to bring home tablecloths from funeral receptions, wash and fold them, and bring them back; or to sponsor drycleaning the tablecloths after funeral receptions. If you can help, please contact June in the Parish Office at [email protected] or 257-2493.

ROCHESTER CATHOLIC WOMEN’S CONFERENCE The fifth annual Rochester Catholic Women’s Conference will be held on March 10 at the Aquinas Institute in Rochester. This year’s theme is “The Power of the Eucharist, Glorifying God and Sanctifying the World.” Please visit Rochestercwc.org or contact Carol Chipalowsky at 257-7828 for more information.

KITCHEN HELP NEEDED The Hospitality Team for Discovering Christ can use some extra hands on Tuesday nights to help with

dinner setup and cleanup. The first shift (4:30–6:30 p.m.) helps w i t h l a s t - m i n u t e preparations, pouring drinks, and setting up and maintaining the

buffet line. The second shift (6:30–8:30 p.m.) helps with washing and drying the dishes and putting everything away. All volunteers are welcome and invited to eat dinner during your shift. Volunteers are needed each Tuesday until March 13. If you can help, contact Ann Marie at [email protected] or 257-2493.

SUPPORTING DREAMERS At our Life and Faith Session last weekend we received very good information about what we should be asking of our elected representatives when it comes to immigration reform and a pathway for those who are referred to as “Dreamers” (individuals who were brought to this country as children and have been raised here). These guidelines for writing to your elected representatives come from the Justice for Immigrants Department of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). You can go to www.justiceforimmigrants.org for more information. “As Catholics, we believe that Congress must pass bipartisan legislation that would provide urgently needed relief for Dreamers. As negotiations toward such a solution continue, we request that you work towards a narrow solution that has the following elements: • Provides a path to citizenship: Dreamers know

America as their only home and should not be denied the opportunity to obtain U.S. citizenship and participate fully in civil life;

• Recognizes the sanctity of families: Family immigration is the foundation of our country and of our Church, and we ask you to reject legislation that threatens family-based immigration;

• Maintain protections for unaccompanied children and asylum seekers: A solution for Dreamers cannot be at the expense of other immigrant children and those fleeing persecution. As you work to find a solution, we urge you to not sacrifice families and family unity.”

FROM THE SISTERS IN THE D.R. Ann Marie wrote to the Sisters about the Discovering Christ program. They assured us of their prayers for us through the coming weeks and also said this: It makes us so happy to know that there are many people who love Jesus and want to know him better each day in order to love him and follow him in fidelity, looking for the things that he likes. It is good that you live deeply that experience of the knowledge of Jesus and then be able to take it to other people who need to deepen their knowledge. Sometimes, because of the many commitments and jobs we have every day, we take less care of the spiritual life. In order to be Christ's presence, that is, for others to see Christ in us (through what we are and do), it is necessary to have those times of prayer, reflection and spiritual life.

FROM THE BOOK OF ANN MARIE

Dear Parish Family,

I love the Olympics! If I could take off from work for the next two weeks and simply watch the Olympics, I would. Lots of people like the Summer Games more than the Winter Games, but I love both. The Winter Olympics has fewer events, so I get a chance to see most of what happens. Obviously, I watch a lot of skating and skiing, but a good curling match is awesome, and who doesn’t love the biathlon (cross country skiing combined with rifle

shooting)? The Olympics have captured my attention because of the display of incredible talent that is matched by determination and dedication sustained over many years. Shaun White is back this year for his fourth Olympics—twelve years at the top of his sport! I find it all thrilling.

I am also thrilled when I see “regular” people doing amazing work. Last Sunday, there was a group of 6–8 people in the kitchen for a few hours preparing for the Discovering Christ meal on Tuesday. This same group returned on Tuesday, with some additional worker-bees, to arrange the tables and chairs, set the tables, make the sauce and salad, serve the meal, and after dinner, to wash all the dishes (for 140 people) and put the kitchen back together. This same pattern will continue for the next five weeks—a thrilling display of gifts and work all focused on providing a great experience for others who are participating in Discovering Christ.

This weekend, a different group of parishioners will arrive at the Parish Center to do a similar thing for the Beyond the Plate fundraising dinner. Tables and chairs will be arranged, tables set, decorations arranged. The experts will be doing the cooking, but lots of dishes will be served and washed by our volunteers. Again, a small committee will have put their best energies together to create a dinner for 160 guests, while raising over $20,000 for the Ithaca MobilePack.

The thrilling part of being in my job is not just to see all the good work that happens at St. Catherine’s, but to discover the gifts that people have to make it possible. Diane is the creative genius behind our table decorations on Tuesday night, and she also uses others’ gifts and talents to create a sense of community. Mary is a hard worker, and she also makes sure that nothing slips through the cracks. Gigi stepped in to be our MC this week at Discovering Christ and did a job equal to the great job that Pam did the first week—providing information while being welcoming and engaging. John figured out not only how to make sauce for 140, but also how to get a group of volunteers organized to get dinner on the table for everyone. Ted will ensure that the professional and volunteer servers for Beyond the Plate know how to work together seamlessly—all while maintaining good cheer and a sense of order. Kate used her sense of hospitality and her connections in the community to bring some new sponsors to Beyond the Plate, all the while affirming the rest of the team. Ted (a different one) uses his attentiveness to coordinate our small group facilitators for Discovering Christ, helping them to feel supported and confident.

Gifts poured out! I watch the Olympics and am amazed at what people are able to do physically and emotionally within their sports. I come to work and am amazed again at what people are able to do with their own God-given talents. No medals will be handed out at St. Catherine’s, because no one thinks of their work as a competition with others. That is perhaps the thing I have been enjoying the most—watching people appreciate the gifts of others and then using their own gifts as a complement to what they see in others. I would suspect that each person named here and the other 50 I could have named just around these two big events would each point to someone else as the reason for the success of these programs. The truth is that success comes from each person doing their best and bringing their gifts—physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally—to bear upon the ministries they are invested in. We are greatly blessed!

Peace,

P.S. – Our Hospitality Team for Discovering Christ could use some help each Tuesday with setup and cleanup. Let me know if you can offer a few hours.

AS WE ENTER INTO LENT...

We take time to prepare for things that are important to us. During Lent, we prepare for the greatest celebration of the Church year—Easter. We follow the path of Jesus, who journeyed through death to resurrection. We die to ourselves so that we, like Jesus, might rise again.

Lent is a good time to ask ourselves:

• What do I need to be happy?

• How do I spend my time, energy, money? What does this tell me about my priorities?

• Do I have unhealthy habits that pull me away from God?

More than any other Church season, Lent focuses our attention on our human reality—our weaknesses and failings as well as our potential for doing good. We focus our attention through three acts: prayer, fasting, and sacrifice/almsgiving.

Prayer: Lent is a time to step away from the world and reflect on how we are living our faith. Prayer also gives us an opportunity to hear God’s voice so we may respond to his call. Turning our hearts toward God prepares us for the Easter celebration.

Fasting for religious purposes is a practice of self-discipline as old as the people of God. It’s an aid to concentration in prayer and a help in refocusing our attention on God. Like other spiritual disciplines, fasting needs to be done in the right spirit and with an open heart.

Sacrifice/Almsgiving: Our prayer and fasting should lead to sacrifice and almsgiving (money or goods given to the poor) and other acts of mercy. When we give something up, our goal is to focus our attention on God and bring him and his concerns back to the center of our lives. Sometimes we discover we need to give something up; other times we may need to do something additional. Through our sacrifices and almsgiving, we unite in solidarity with those who regularly do without.
