Is It Necessary To Be In Danger of Death To Receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick? NO!
“If anyone is sick among you, he should summon the priests of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)
The document on the liturgy from the Second Vatican Council (Sacrosanctum Concilium) notes that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick “is a sacrament not only for those who are at the point of death.” This Sacrament of God’s mercy and healing is by no means only for those who are dying. According to the Rite for this Sacrament, a person need not be in danger of death, but “dangerously ill”, either from sickness or advanced age. This means that those who are older may receive this Sacrament, if they are weakened by the ordinary infirmities of old age, even if they are not suffering from any specific affliction or disease. It is important to recall that the illness and suffering need not only be physical.
On Saturday, April 13th at 9:00am, we will be celebrating a bi-lingual Mass, which will include the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It will be an opportunity for us to join together with those are suffering and offer them the company of our faith, hope, and love. If you are ill, please join us. If you are weak from age—even if there is no dangerous illness present—please let us pray with you. If you have a loved one who is dangerously ill due to sickness or old age, please bring him/her.
“The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick brings Jesus closer to those in need, strengthening their faith and hope. It permits us to touch with our hands God's compassion for humanity. The priest and those who are
present during the anointing of the sick, in fact, represent the whole Christian community, who, as one body with Jesus, embrace the person who is suffering and his or her family members, providing them with strength and hope
and sustaining them with their prayers and love.” (Pope Francis) Msgr. Geno Sylva
¡NO!
(Papa Francisco) Mons. Geno Sylva
