Services
How quickly time flies by! Summer is about over, September is here, school isstarting back, and fall weather will not be far behind. With all of that come changesand special events here at St. Matthew’s Cathedral as well. On September 2nd, ournew secretary, Erica Anderson, will begin in the office, overlapping with Karen for aweek or two. We will offer our monthly service of Evensong on Friday, September5th, followed by a reception. On September 7th, we will move back to the highaltar for the celebration of the Eucharist each Sunday and welcome theparticipation of the choir, accompanied by our new organist, Wade Holtzapfel. TheChristian Education program for all ages will resume on September 7th. TheCathedral Speaker’s Series will again be offered in the undercroft for adults. OnSunday, September 21st, we will celebrate the feast of our patron saint, Matthew. Then, on September 28th, we will offer a Blessing of the Animals for the Cathedraland the community at 3:00 pm. Along with what will be happening at thecathedral, the ministry at Canterbury House will be starting up for students at theUniversity of Wyoming.
I look forward to what September and the fall will bring. But, with all of thisactivity and busyness, we should be reminded to seek and find balance in our lives. As followers of Christ, we are challenged to maintain a life of wholeness andwellness – physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Serving as presenters at oursecond Speaker Series class on the 14th, Joyce Honour and Chris Walwrath willshare what they have learned about wellness at a training conference theyattended this summer inChicago. I hope that we can allgrow and benefit from theirlearning throughout the comingmonths. I pray that we, thepeople of St. Matthew’sCathedral, can be a healthy andvital congregation and anexample to others.

The visioning committee has finalized thevision statement ﴾see below﴿. Thanks to all whoprovided input! The visioning committee and thevestry met to start the process of developing a setof goals and priorities based on the visionstatement to guide the church over the next two tothree years. Stay tuned for more. A draft of thepriorities will be presented to the congregation inSeptember.
We are in the process of developing anelectronic handbook for the vestry, which willinclude a variety of important documents, e.g.,
St. Matthew’s bylaws, and vestry, personnel andbusiness/finance policies.
The vestry will return this fall to mutualministry review, which is a process for the parish toask “How are we doing?” Incorporation of mutualministry review into the fabric of the church wasone of the vestry goals established last fall. Ourfirst steps will be to learn more about mutualministry review and then develop a process for ourparish. More to come on this.

The New Testament illuminates and enrichesour lives in myriad ways. The Gospels are a vividand inspiring record of the life and teachings ofJesus. They nourished the Disciples, brought hopeto those individuals and multitudes who gatheredto hear the compassionate words and parables, which continue to sustain and guide us today.Simple words, simple stories – profound and life‐changing. In moments of joy, or when confoundedwith despair or disappointment, we find strengthand refuge when we open our minds and hearts toembrace the true meaning of what "loving ourneighbors as we love ourselves" truly means for usand for our lives – it heals our minds and bodies inmyriad ways.
St. Matthew's Cathedral is a beautiful place forworship. Our services feed our souls: manyopportunities, many manifestations. Among ourmany gifts is the Soup Kitchen, a "home" in ourUndercroft: a special place – another opportunityfor St. Matthew's to minister "by thought, word anddeed". At mid‐day on weekdays, individuals andfamilies, residents and travelers gather to sharemeals in a welcoming setting. Appealing, appetizing meals are prepared and served byfriendly Staff and Volunteers ﴾regulars andoccasional others﴿ who take time to join in keepingthe Soup Kitchen's doors open. Round tables,
square tables, fold‐up chairs: gatherings for sittingtogether, in community – inviting laughter and, perhaps, useful information ﴾i.e. where to seek/findservices impacting life‐living needs﴿; giving andreceiving trust and respect. For all these reasonsand many, many more the Soup Kitchen is ananchor, a haven. A LIVING part of our ministry, ourmission.
The Cathedral's office shelves contain severalprinted tablets with these words: "Sharing the Feastwith a hungry world". This is a vital part of ourministry, our being. Our hunger, our feastembraces our bodies, our souls and needs andmust be grounded within our hearts. So…
Come and see for yourself. Come to volunteertime. Come for a cup of coffee, and/or a meal.Your prayers and your presence filled with the HolySpirit "Feed My Sheep" will be a blessing for othersand for you ﴾each and all﴿.
