Annual Diocesan Appeal 2018 A collaboration in which every parish contributes to-ward the support of ministries and services rendered by our Diocese of San Jose. The Cathedral goal this year is $135,500. Each household taking part in the cam-paign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward helping our Diocese fund education, training and ser-vice to the faithful in all the Diocese. This includes Vocations (studies & housing), Ministerial training, Ministry in the jails, Social Ministries, Chancery opera-tional expenses, Youth programs and the Office for the protection of the Vulnerable. Contributions that surpass the parish goal of $135,500 are rebated to our parish directly. We have attained $122, 312 in pledges thus far from 244 donors. It is not too late to commit to a pledge. The pledge can be fulfilled in the course of the year. Thank you.

St. Augustine of Canterbury (?-May 26, 605) In the year 596, some 40 monks set out from Rome to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in England. Lead-ing the group was Augustine, the prior of their

monastery. Hardly had he and his men reached Gaul when they heard stories of the ferocity of the Anglo-Saxons and of the treacherous waters of the English Channel. Augustine returned to Rome and to Gregory the Great—the pope who had sent them—only to be assured by him that their fears were groundless. Augustine set out again. This time the group crossed the English Channel and landed in the territo-ry of Kent, ruled by King Ethelbert, a pagan married to a Christian, Bertha. Ethelbert received them kindly, set up a residence for them in Can-terbury and within the year, on Pentecost Sunday 597, was himself baptized. After being consecrated a bishop in France, Au-gustine returned to Canterbury, where he founded his see. He constructed a church and monastery near where the present cathe-dral, begun in 1070, now stands. As the faith spread, additional sees were established at London and Rochester. Work was some-times slow and Augustine did not always meet with success. Attempts to reconcile the Anglo-Saxon Christians with the original Briton Christians—who had been driven into western England by Anglo-Saxon in-vaders—ended in dismal failure. Augustine failed to convince the Britons to give up certain Celtic customs at variance with Rome and to forget their bitterness, helping him evangelize their Anglo-Saxon conquerors. Laboring patiently, Augustine wisely heeded the missionary principles—quite enlightened for the times—suggested by Pope Gregory: purify rather than de-stroy pagan temples and customs; let pagan rites and festi-vals be transformed into Christian feasts; retain local cus-toms as far as possible. The limited success Augustine achieved in England before his death in 605, a short eight years after his arrival, would eventually bear fruit long after in the conversion of England. Augustine of Canterbury can truly be called the “Apostle of England.”

INSIDE/OUTSIDE Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restor-ative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time although this Sunday and next Sunday, are solemni-ties that call our attention to the central mysteries of our faith. Today we cele-brate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consid-

er what we believe about God, who has revealed him-self to us in the Trinity, one God in three Persons. In its conclusion, today’s Gospel of Matthew quickly moves from the disciples’ discovery of Jesus’ empty tomb and Jesus’ appearance to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to the commission that Jesus gives to his disciples. The final commission is given on the mountaintop. Many of the most important events hap-pen on a mountaintop, and Matthew used this motif often. Peter, James, and John saw Jesus transfigured on the mountaintop, and Jesus taught the crowds from the mountaintop in the Sermon on the Mount. In today’s Gospel, the eleven disciples go the moun-taintop in Galilee, as Jesus had instructed them through Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. They see Jesus, and they worship and doubt at the same time. Jesus approaches them and commissions them to baptize and teach. It is a task for which Jesus had pre-viously prepared his disciples; recall that Jesus had already sent the twelve apostles to preach the King-dom of God and to heal. Yet earlier, the Twelve were sent only to the House of Israel; in this final commis-sion, the eleven are told to go to all nations. The mis-sion of Jesus is now to be taken to all people, and the task is to baptize and to teach. Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in the name of the Trinity. We are reminded today that this central mystery of faith is meant to be lived and we share in the life of the blessed Trinity seeking to invite others to share in God’s love. Loyola Press
