Flooding antics and how we can reduce it ….

Over the course of the summer a few natural soakways were dug into a few of our neighbour’s gardens. In principle this is ‘low tech’ approach to reduce flooding across out city. In Cathays the volunteers have dug holes out (1 metre down) of the gardens, filled them with broken bricks and stones then covered the tops back over. This (in principle) helps reduce immediate flooding in your own yard – yet if several hundred natural soakways were dug out across Cathays (and inner districts) we could reduce flooding elsewhere across our district. What do you think? Agree/disagree?

The excess soil has been sieved where it has been added to the bespoke home-made planters that a good few of you have had a hand in building, staining, waterproofing and adding the indigenous wildflowers to.

Some enquiries have come through about adding water butts in to some family gardens which we’ve advised on how to do it with low impact. Fill the water butt during the storms – then add the water to the garden during drought periods.

A couple of our residents have got a bit too adventurous and redirect the upstairs plumbing for shower water to feed their ponds (and what about all the human hair?) which the reeds clean up the water in the ponds.

Your Cathays #11 – Spring 2020

Planning starts 6 months in advance for each successive newsletter. The main theme for next spring is ‘health’ with issues of social isolation (of the young and the elderly), isolation of the vulnerable, nuisances (noise intrusion etc.)
