STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” - Matthew 22:37

Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in your life in all things.

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) Thank you for your generosity!

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky

waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

They say that experience is the best teacher. But we often fail to learn from our past, especially our collective past. The laws given to the Israelites on Mount Sinai were intended to guide them along the path of righteousness so that they might serve as a light to the nations, fulfilling a promise God made to Abraham in Genesis to bless all nations through Abraham’s family. In biblical Israel there is no “separation between church and state”; God’s law is the law of the land. Today’s reading shows a particular concern for the vulnerable in society: aliens, widows and orphans, and the poor. God calls the people to show concern for aliens in their midst because they themselves “were once aliens … in the land of Egypt” (v 21);

concern for aliens in their midst because they themselves “were once aliens … in the land of Egypt” (v 21); their experience should help them empathize with others in a similar situation. God encourages compassion for widows, orphans, and the poor by saying that, if the vulnerable are not treated justly, “I will surely hear their cry” (v 22). Paul reminds the Thessalonians that the power of the gospel has transformed them into “imitators … of the Lord” (v 6). As disciples, we are called to “serve the living and true God” (v 9) with our lives as we “await his Son from heaven” (v 10). We live in this world while acting as citizens of heaven. The connection between today’s Gospel and the first reading is rather obvious. A Pharisee comes to test Jesus, so Jesus reminds the biblical scholar that two things are important in life: loving God and loving our neighbor. Later theologians will tell us that we cannot love God if we do not love our neighbor. As Jesus says, “The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments” (v 40). Examining all the commandments in the Torah — not just the first “ten commandments” — we discover that they all deal with our relationship with God and our relationship with neighbor. To be a holy people, we must show our love for both.

2017 BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL CAMPAÑA ANNUAL DEL OBISPO 2017

Did you know that this year our Diocese had the largest number of men ordained to the priesthood in the country? There are currently over 50 men now enrolled in seminaries to prepare for priestly life in the Paterson Diocese. That is a tremendous blessing, but one that comes with a significant cost for room, board, tuition and other related expenses. Your support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps meet the annual expenses for the seminarian education. It is a gift that will enhance the faith life of our Diocese for years to come. Please make a pledge today. For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2017appeal.org and follow the instructions. Thank You! Appeal. For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2017appeal.org and follow the instructions. Whether it is a pledge, a one-time gift or an on-line donation, your support is most welcome and greatly needed. Please consider participating in this worthy cause. Whatever you can do will be a great blessing!

IMPORTANT HEALTH SCREENINGS/EXÁMENES IMPORTANTES DE PREVENCIÓN Stroke Scan Plus will be here at St. Paul’s performing 8 ultrasound screenings on Friday and Saturday, November 3rd and 4th 2017. Are you one of the many that have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, or you have family history of heart disease, stroke, or internal cancers? If so, absolutely do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possible serious disease. They will scan the arteries in the neck, the main artery off the heart, the thyroid, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and the arteries in the legs. These screenings are typically NOT performed at annual check-ups, nor will insurance companies pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Collectively, these screenings cost thousands. They will be offering these screenings to you for $155 for all 8 combined. You will also receive an Atrial Fibrillation screening. Insurance is NOT necessary to receive this discount. However, Pre-Registration IS necessary and appointments are limited. Please call 1- 866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today.

Let us not forget to pray for our dearly departed.
