CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY

We welcome members to our first ‘live’ auction since 29th February 2020. We hope you enjoy the experience and find many things among the items listed to tempt you.

Conditions of Sale The CMS welcomes items of cricket memorabilia for its auctions. There will normally be just two auctions in the year - March and October. The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged etc., or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia to all its members (including overseas) and only CMS members are eligible to bid for items. Members are welcome to send postal bids which should be in writing/e-mail before the auction. Bids will normally start at 60% of the lower estimate unless there is a higher reserve price or other postal bids. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will usually be sent by recorded delivery. Postage will be paid by the successful postal bidder. The CMS will be responsible for the items sent for auction while they are in the possession of the CMS. The CMS welcomes items of particular and unusual interest for the auctions. Non-members can send items for auction but we would discourage large quantities of books, magazines etc. A list of prices realised at an auction will be displayed on the Society’s website after the auction.

Remember - it is the only cricket auction with no buyers premium!

PLEASE NOTE THAT COMMISSION BIDS NEED TO BE SUBMITTED TO MICHAEL BY POST OR EMAIL

([email protected]) BY NOON THURSDAY 21st OCTOBER.

Please see the end of the catalogue for a Mini Postal sale of Wisdens.

Assumed to be complete. VG Est. £2/3 266. Child’s cereal bowl depicting two bears playing cricket. There is no manufacturer’s name but it is thought to be a 1950s item. The main protagonist has just been bowled neck and crop, much to the delight of the smaller bear behind the wicket. There is a significant chip at about cover for a RH batsman and that has led to a crack of about 5cms. The bowl has a diameter of 18.5cms; white ceramic with gold decoration to the rim. Good Est. £3/5 267. Sandland ashtray of Lord’s Pavilion. This is the oblong version, measuring 23cms x 15cms, with a coloured image of the Lord’s Pavilion. There is much crazing, which only to be expected on such items. VG Est. £8/12 268. Royal Cauldon large dish. An unusually shaped dish which is basically oblong with a section in the middle and two angled ends. The ‘dish’ section has a green/orange image of a batsman with three fielders and a church in the background; the two angled ends have the same image of the wicket being broken, a wicketkeeper and a slip. Overall it measures 21 x 16.5cms. Its provenance has proved difficult. Royal Cauldon ceased to exist in 1962 and the mark underneath does not accord with marks to that date. However, it transpires that the ‘Royal Cauldon England’ mark continued to be used by other potteries

29

post-1962. There is slight crazing, which gives it age, but no definitive date can be ascribed to it. Nevertheless, it’s an attractive piece in excellent condition. Est. £20/25 269. Honiton Pottery tray/dish. An oblong dish with two boys playing cricket in (rather than on) a field. The batsman has one pad and a rough bat, the wicket is made of sticks and there is another boy well behind the wicket. This image is more of a crude ‘folk art’ style. It measures 24cms by 14cms, tapering to 10cms. Honiton Pottery is quite collectable, having ceased production in 1997. Regardless of the quality of the artwork, it is in excellent condition. Est. £6/10 270. Buchan, Portobello mug. This stoneware mug/tankard depicts a batsman at the wicket in colour; there is no design on the other side. It is 12cms tall, 10cms diameter at the bottom tapering to 8cms at the top. Buchan’s is an old Scottish firm, which moved from Portobello in Edinburgh to Crieff but ceased manufacturing in 2000. The manufacturer’s name is in a thistle design to the base with an untraceable number stamped on the base, too. Excellent Est. £4/6 271. Centenary of the Ashes stoneware stein. Depicts Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 1977 to one side and March 1877 on the other. “A Century of Test Cricket” is opposite the handle. It was manufactured by Elischer Pottery, who were commissioned to produce commemorative pottery for the Centenary of Test Cricket at the MCG. It is 12cms tall, and a diameter of 8cms at the business end. It is in excellent condition. You will find an illustration of this item on page 10 (the right hand one) of our June 2021 magazine. Est. £8/10 272. The Origins of Sport mug – cricket. A very modern item in cream/brown with a cricket scene and other factual information around the mug. Small, 10.5cms tall with a diameter of 7cms. As new Est. £2/3 273. Ashdale stoneware mug. In their Sportsmen series, this design by Jef Eardley depicts a bowler, batsman and wicketkeeper. It measures 10.5cms tall with a diameter of 8.5cms. Certainly modern, date unknown. As new Est. £2/3 274. Cadbury’s biscuit tin. Dating from the 1950s this tin has an elegant ‘country house’ cricket scene in which players and gentleman spectators are in top hats, the ladies being in crinoline with parasols. Rectangular, it measures 26x13cms. VG Est. £4/8 275. Huntley and Palmers biscuit tin. The tin has the well known image of four boys entitled “Tossing for Innings” on the lid. The tin is rectangular, with curved edges and measures 17 x 19cms. Huntley and Palmer ceased to exist under that name in 1970, but this tin has a much more 1950s look to it. An attractive item. VG Est. £3/5 276. Colman’s Mustard tin. A large, modern tin which would see the average family of four not needing to restock for 10 years! It has the traditional W G Grace image to the front and three other non-cricket images to the other sides. Included in the tin are three cricket fridge magnets of a pig, a bear and a Yorkshire attired bloke; a W G Grace Colman’s Mustard magnet and a completely unrelated Sussex rosette. The tin is 17cms tall and 13 x 10cms. VG+ Est. £3/5 277. Taverners chocolate éclairs tin. The tin, which dates from the late 1990s (the éclairs were best before May 1999) has three illustrative panels. The main one is an illustration of the product; another has a Country Market and the third Cricket Scene 1825. The tin is about 13cms tall, with a diameter of 10cms. Its excellent condition would only have been enhanced with toffees! Est. £3/5 278. Cadbury’s biscuit tin. The hinged tin has a picture of the Cadbury buildings at Bourneville with the cricket ground in the foreground. No cricket is depicted, but the pavilion is shown to the right of the

30

image. Underneath the picture is a banner “From Cadbury’s Factory in a Garden Bourneville”. The shape of the tin (20 x 10cms) suggests it might have housed chocolate fingers, alas, none remain. Date uncertain – 1950s? VG Est. £3/5 279. Bryn Parry paperweight. Depicting two crossed cricket bats (one bearing the motif “Kenton CC) with a ball above. Oval, with cloth base and the maker’s label; measuring 10cms across and 7cms height. Three scrapbooks by George Neville Weston, W G Grace biographer comprising cuttings, scorecards, typed transcriptions, etc. compiled by Weston. One scrapbook relates to articles and illustrations from The Bystander from 5th July to 6th September 1905. Apart from an initial postcard of W G, the rest illustrates cricket between the said dates. Another relates to articles and illustrations from Black and White Budget Illustrated from 11th April to 26th December 1903. Again there is an initial image of W G from the publication and various other illustrations, with several county teams featured, including Yorkshire and Middlesex. The third relates to extracts from The Cricket Chronicle for the Season 1863 by Capt W Bayly 1864. Again an initial illustration of W G (the Wortley image) followed by extracts typed by Weston: an initial explanation followed by scorecards typed out from the book. Most feature Lansdown, others relate to Bristol area Gloucestershire team. In all of these the Grace family feature significantly, with the bowling of E M being outstanding. In 1863 W G was a mere 15/16 year old. An interesting aside is that the Corsham Laycock team contained three members of the Awdry family from which the Rev W Awdry of Thomas the Tank Engine fame subsequently came. These scrapbooks have been compiled with great care; the presentation is meticulous. One of the catalogue compilers had three other such albums and the standard of these are just as good – and interesting. Excellent Est. £30/50 298.
