The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Workforce Education Division recognized three businesses and industries for their service and partnership at the annual Business and Industry Appreciation Luncheon held Thursday at The Thames Center on the college’s Wesson Campus. These businesses or organizations that have provided exceptional support for Co-Lin students in the past year.The 2014 President’s Award was presented to Kings’ Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven. KDMC is committed to the community and the overall health and well being of our citizens. Their partnership with Co-Lin’s Career-Technical Division provides internships in their medical laboratory, radiology department, nursing department and respiratory care department. KDMC continues to allow their employees to serve

on various advisory committees for these programs. KDMC is an excellent example of how an organization invests time in students and shows the benefits for both the business and the students. They have demonstrated a very strong commitment to students’ selection of career pathways through Co-Lin’s Scrubs and Scopes Conference. 2014 Business and Industry Special RecognitionsSpecial Recognition Award was presented to Puckett Machinery for their outstanding support for the Diesel Technology program. They serve on the program’s craft and advisory committee and have donated engines and parts for instruction to continually ensure this program is up-to-date. Co-Lin students are provided the opportunity to tour their facilities and they provide many employment opportunities for graduates of Co-Lin’s diesel program. This year, Puckett Machinery has established a scholarship specifically for students majoring in the Diesel Technology Program.

Also receiving a Special Recognition Award was Enersteel of Natchez. Enersteel has gone above and beyond to identify and solve an issue within Workforce Welding Program curriculum at Co-Lin. They are one of the most safe, dependable, and quality conscious suppliers of specialty fabrication in the nation. Their Natchez facility is fully equipped with state of the art machinery and staffed with ASME certified welders, engineers and estimators. Their workforce has the utmost experience in successfully performing the most complex and demanding projects.

Through providing employees that serve on our Career and Technical Advisory Committees and also our Workforce Advisory Council, Enersteel continually supports Co-Lin’s

welding programs. They visit classrooms, speak directly with our students, provide valuable feedback to our instructors and Workforce personnel, supply Co-Lin with countless sheets of metal and hire our graduates.

Working with Co-Lin’s Workforce Education Division, the Natchez and Wesson night welding curriculum has been revised to now follow the NCCER Contren curriculum and to add skills that were lacking from the old program. This curriculum change will provide more value to our students as they enter the workforce. Without Enersteel’s initiative to open this dialogue, these changes would not have taken place.

A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Ora Franklin of the Brookhaven WIN Job Center for her 25-plus years of service to Career-Technical and Workforce Education. She has served on Career and Technical Advisory Committees, assisted Workforce with promoting their classes and guided countless individuals searching for jobs.

For well over a decade, Georgia-Pacific has provided their Catfish Cooking Team to prepare a delicious catfish meal at our Business-Industry Appreciation Luncheon.

Registration is on a first-come, first served basis. Class sizes are varied and some have minimum and maximum participant limits. Note that class times, locations and fees are subject to change. Workforce Education will make all reasonable attempts to notify students of class cancellations or changes. Registration is not complete without payment if applicable. Copiah-Lincoln Community College accepts cash, check, money order, credit card, and purchase order. Make payments payable to Copiah-Lincoln Community College or Co-Lin.

REFUND POLICY

1) Refunds will be issued only within the fiscal year (July through June) in which the class was held.

2) Refund requests should be made in writing. Request should include the name of participant, name of class, reason for refund, payment method, location and date of class, contact information, and mailing address.

3) Written refund requests are not required in the event the class is cancelled due to a necessary action by Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

4)Class fees including but not limited to test vouchers, curriculum materials, book fees, background checks, required medical testing, meals, or any time sensitive materials are refunded at the discretion of the facilitator.

5) In the event any class/program specific rules conflict with these general rules, the class specific rules shall control. Co-Lin Workforce reserves the right to interpret and apply all rules applicable to its classes and its interpretation and application shall be final.

WESSON-A newly formed five member consortium of south Mississippi colleges is aligning existing training programs for efficiency and creating new training programs to support south Mississippi industries and workers. The five community colleges are Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Jones County Junior College, Pearl River Community College, Southwest Mississippi Community College and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Combined, these colleges encompass 29 counties in south Mississippi and serve over 47,800 individuals in workforce training each year.

The South Mississippi Alliance for Workforce Solutions SMAWS was signed into existence in December 2013 by the five college presidents, and the Mississippi Community College Board is providing initial alliance support. The alliance, which is governed by a five-member board composed of the workforce development leaders at each college, has established a mission of investigating, developing and delivering education and training for citizens and industries in the five community college service districts through demand-driven, innovative, traditional and non-traditional formats to advance the south Mississippi workforce. Angela Berch, Workforce Education Director will represent Copiah-Lincoln Community College on this board.

The alliance is seeking to develop credentialing packages in the sectors of both healthcare and manufacturing. The credential packages are designed to contain multiple, nationally recognized credentials in each sector, which will benefit employers, employees, and potential employees in these sectors.

SMAWS is planning a one-day workforce development conference for south Mississippi in the early summer, the first conference of its kind, with a focus on workforce in the southern counties. Copiah-Lincoln Community College President Ronald Nettles, states, “We believe that by combining our resources and expertise from each college, we can better meet the workforce needs of the communities we serve in south Mississippi.”

Outlook 2013 – December 9, 2014 - Registration Deadline: December 1. Outlook e-mail software is more than just sending and receiving e-mail. Learn about handy e-mail options that can improve your workflow. In addition, learn about managing contacts, your calendars, and to-do lists all in one location. Basic e-mail knowledge required. Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Contren Learning Series Level 1The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) sets the standard in construction education. The Contren Learning Series developed by NCCER includes more than 55 craft areas. Copiah-Lincoln Community College, presents Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Contren levels 1 & 2 training. Each course is 175 training hours. This program is newly expanded to meet this growing need and now features instruction from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). CONTREN Core, Industrial Welding Levels 1 & 2 will be covered. A silver level Career Readiness Certificate is required to enter.This 36 week program runs Mon. through Thurs. from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and some Sat. will be required. Upon successful completion the student will be receive a certificate of completion, NCCER Contren Core Welding level I and II, OSHA-10 hour general, CPR.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TEChNICIAN: BASIC CouRSE | WESSoN & NATChEzThis course integrates the theory of emergency medical care with the practical skills necessary to provide basic life support with an ambulance service or other specialized rescue services. Enrollment in Emergency Medical Technician-Basic requires admis-sion into Copiah-Lincoln Community College as a student. Entrance into Emergency Medical Technician-Basic requires a high school di-ploma or equivalency, passing a physical examination, and having an ACT minimum score of 16 on file in the Office of Admissions. The EMT-Basic course consists of 136 classroom hours along with 12 hours of emergency room clinicals. Students must also make at least five runs on the ambulance before becoming certified in Mississip-pi. Most area hospitals require a criminal background check and a negative TB test before admittance into clinicals. Students who suc-cessfully complete the eight semester hour basic course and pass the National Registry EMT-Basic (NREMT) exam qualify as a certified EMT-Basic in Mississippi.Students who plan to pursue EMT-Paramedic certification must have successfully completed Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II before applying for admission into a paramedic program.

global conflict fought in deserts, mountains, sea, and air. It collapsed the Victorian monarchies and ended the Age of Empire. World War I triggered the fall of Russia to the Bolsheviks, and the American rise to a world power. The map of Europe today resembles the map drawn at the end of World War I as the legacy of the war is still shaping events today.

Course format will be short presentation, document/film review, and group discussion. The five-week course will cover topics including:

1914- Hubris – The Origins and Personalities of the Great War. 1915- Technology vs. Tactics—the myth of lions led by donkeys and life in the trenches.1916- Learning the Hard Way—the year of battle.1917- Doughboys and Reds- the year of hope and fear.1918- Legacy and Nemesis— why did peace fail?

Simpson County Development Foundation (SCDF)In partnership with Copiah-Lincoln Community College Workforce Education, the Simpson County Development Foundation conducts the Simpson County Leadership Development Institute each calendar year. The Leadership Institute is a joint project of SCDF and Co-Lin, utilizing the resources of Co-Lin Workforce Education and the facilities of the Co-Lin Simpson County Center.

Each year, the Institute is held locally at the Co-Lin Simpson Center, limited to no more than 20 participants and tuition is $200.00. Lunch and refreshments are provided by the Foundation each day the Institute is in session.

The Institute is scheduled in four two-day sessions spread across the calendar year.

• Participants take part in classroom learning on topics such as the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory; Essential Skills of Leadership; Essential Skills of Communication; and Entrepreneurship.

• In addition, there are numerous on-site visits to county businesses, institutions, and manufacturers.

• Each annual Institute concludes with a Local Leaders Forum.

• As part of the Institute, participants select a project directly related to community or workplace.

Nominations for participants are solicited from the county’s leadership and business communities. Nominees then complete applications, and participants are selected from among the applicants. The Institute’s goal is to provide participants with a development opportunity—both personal and professional—that they will find to be well worth the investment of time and tuition. Moreover, participants have a chance to meet and interact with other individuals from around the county with whom they will continue to share the cultural and economic leadership of the county.

WoRkfoRCE INvESTMENT ACT The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a federal program that pro-vides funding for educational and training programs at various com-munity colleges throughout the nation. Students of Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Co-Lin), who meet eligibility requirements for the WIA program, receive federal aid to support their educational endeavors and encourage their entrance into the workforce.

Funds typically cover the cost of tuition and books during the last two semesters of certain four-semester training programs. Those inter-ested in obtaining more information should contact one of Co-Lin’s WIA Education and Training Coordinators.

WorkKeys is a job skills assess-ment system (product of ACT, Inc.) measuring “real world” skills that employers believe are critical to

job success. These skills are valuable for any occupation - skilled or professional - and at any level of education.

Earned Credential: A Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) is earned based upon the outcome of an individuals assessment. Getting a CRC will allow an individual to show prospective employers that he or she possesses the basic skills they are seeking.

Future Workforce @ Co-Lin

Students from district schools including Natchez High School, Cathedral High School, Jefferson County Technical Center, Bogue Chitto, Brookhaven Academy, Brookhaven Technical Center, Enterprise Attendance Center, Franklin Co. High School, and Hazlehurst High School attended the 2014 Scrubs and Scopes at the Wesson or Natchez Campus. Students were presented with a panel discussion from area health care providers as well as demonstrations on the various Co-Lin medical based programs. This event provided district high school students to experience career options in the medical field or pathway.

The Nu Kappa Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda attended the State Leadership Competition in Columbus, MS March 26-28, 2014. Twenty-eight participants and three advisors attended the conference. The chapter brought home 32 awards and recognitions. Madison Watts and Laura Speights served on the 2013-2014 State Officer Team and were recognized for their service. Madison Watts also received the Rufus T. Jones Memorial Scholarship. Mike McIntyre will be inducted to the National Wall of Fame for Advisers in Nashville, TN for serving 37 years as a local chapter adviser. Dr. Suzanne Johnson was recognized as Local Chapter Adviser of the Year.

Natchez Campus students annually participate in the Miss-Lou Relay for Life overnight event. This year the Workforce Education Evening Welding class participated by custom making horse shoe art to be sold for fundraising. The Relay for Life team raised over $2300 and won first place for their t-shirt design. Carmello Rivera (left) designed the shirt and is a student in the workforce welding program.

During the Legislative Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges on February 25th, Legislative leaders took a moment to speak with Co- Lin’s students. The Culinary Arts students did a great job assisting with the Legislative Luncheon.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College Automotive Program Receives National AccreditationThe automotive training program at Co-Lin on the Wesson Campus received accreditation by NATEF and The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Co-Lin’s automotive program has been accredited in the following areas: (list areas of accreditation).To achieve this coveted recognition, the school’s automotive training program underwent rigorous evaluation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). Nationally accepted standards of excellence in areas such as instruction, facilities, and equipment were used.

“This is great news for automotive-minded young people and their parents,” said Donald Seyfer, NATEF Chair. “Because this program increases cooperation between local education and industry leaders, it gives added assurance that Co-Lin’s graduates will be employable entry-level technicians.
