    1. Verbal Ability(There is no fixed syllabus as such. But thefollowing covers almost the entire syllabus as hasbeen the historical trend.)

    a. Vocabulary Based

    i. Questions based on testing one's vocabularycould be plain vanilla "synonym - antonym"questions as it appeared in CAT 2001, CAT2002. Alternatively, the questions on vocabularymay appear as fill in the blank with theappropriate word as it appeared in the 0.5marks section of CAT 2004 or as part of the 2marks section in CAT 2005.

ii. There have been interesting variations to thisquestion as in CAT 2001 and CAT 2002 where asimple word was given. Four alternate usagesfor the word was given and four different shades

of meaning for the word was given. One had tomatch the usage with the appropriate meaning.A sample of such a question is given if youfollow the link at the bottom of the page.

iii. However, please note that the emphasis onvocabulary has been on the decline and theneed to memorize meanings of words such as"pleonasm" or "pterodactyl" is not essential tocrack such questions in CAT.

    b. English Usage / Grammari. Sentence correction or Grammar based

questions appear in different flavours in the CATverbal section. It could be questions where youare asked to spot the section of a sentence thatis grammatically incorrect or it could bequestions where a part of a sentence inunderlined and you are provided with four orfive alternative choices. You have to select the

choice that0 corrects the error in the underlinedpart.

ii. More recently in CAT 2005, questions ongrammar appeared with a twist. A set of 4sentences were given and you had to find outhow many out of the 4 sentences were

grammatically correct.iii. A good understanding of the basics of English

grammar coupled with adequate exercises onthe different types of common errors thatappear in CAT will help you sail through thesekinds of questions.

    2. Logical Reasoning(There is no fixed syllabus as such. But thefollowing covers almost the entire syllabus as hasbeen the historical trend)

These questions could take multiple forms. The mostcommon one is that of rearranging sentences of aparagraph. It could also include paraphrasing what hasbeen said in a paragraph. In some CAT papersquestions similar to the ones that appear in the CriticalReasoning section of GMAT have been tested.
