USI Welcomes Wage Increase Come into Effect for Student Nurses and MidwivesThe Union of Students in Ireland has welcomed the proposals coming into effect after the joint efforts of SIPTU nursing, the Department of Health, PNA, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, independent facilitator Mr Sean McHugh, HSE and INMO, with supporting research done by USI to increase wages for students? nurses and midwives. Recent research by USI found that 93% of student nurses have thought about emigrating when they qualify. USI are hopeful that this number will decrease once the pay increases come into effect on the 1st March. Student nurses and midwives are currently paid below the minimum wage at a rate of ?6.49 an hour.?USI welcomes the action by the government to relieve the strain on financially crippled student nurses,? Kevin Donoghue, Union of Students in Ireland President, said, ?I read about one nursing student who was paid just ?374 after tax for working 114 hours in three weeks, which equates to a mere ?3.28 an hour. This change in the wage increase means that student nurses and midwives a more secure financial position.?The current hourly rate for the first 12 weeks is ?6.86. This will be changed to ?9.48 ? an increase of ?2.62. The current hourly rate for the second 12 weeks is ?7.32. This will be changed to ?9.48 ? an increase of ?2.16. The current hourly rate for the final 12 weeks is ?8.24. This will be changed to ?9.48 ? an increase of ?1.24.?What this means for the current nursing and midwifery students is that those currently on placement will have the new rate applied, from the 1st March 2016,? Donoghue said, ?Those currently in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year will have the increased rate applied for the duration of the placement.??While we are happy at the progress made, we are disappointed that the same incremental credit could not be applied to those who have qualified since 2011; and from whom it was removed, but acknowledge that the Department of Public expenditure and Reform has agreed to set up a review of the effects of the reduction of this incremental credit on the ability of the Health Services to retain and recruit qualifying nurses and Midwives.? Phil Ni Sheaghdha, the Director of Industrial Relations at the INMO, said. ?There is a lot more work to be done for student nurses and midwives. The unions are completely committed to fully engaging with the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and the Department of Health in order to secure incremental credit for these categories of nurses, to ensure they receive the same benefit as those qualifying in 2016.? The proposals arrived at involve the following as of the 1st March 2016 ?The restoration of pay for students on 36 week placement directly linked to the staff nurse rate of pay. The rate to be set is at 70% of the staff nurse rate of pay. Incremental credit of ?4830 will apply on graduation, for the entire period, together with the immediate post-graduation/ pre-registration period while you await registration with NMBI. Permanent contracts will be offered on graduation. Incremental credit will be reviewed for all nurses/ midwives who trained in Ireland since 2011 and who were not afforded incremental credit for the 36 week internship.

Training Support GrantsQuest ionI?m getting Jobseeker?s Allowance and am really interested in working with food. I found a café near me that is will ing to offer me a job. They have asked me to do a food safety (HACCP)

course f irst but I can?t afford the course fee. Is there any help with this?Answer (February 2016)You should talk to your Department of Social Protection (DSP) case off icer about a Training Support Grant. This scheme can give you quick access to short-term training that will help you take up a work opportunity.Your DSP case off icer can approve a grant under this scheme where:A training need is identif ied that is not provided by DSP directly or any other State provider and is not available quickly or in a suitable location. The intervention identif ied is l inked to both the activation needs of the jobseeker and labour market conditions. The intervention is part of the agreed personal progression or action plan to enter or re-enterwork.They are satisf ied that you have provided reasonable evidence or grounds of need (for example, in the form of a job offer or of a potential job offer) or an identif ied skil l gap or a requirement to maintain or achieve accreditation (for example, safe pass, driving licences, HACCP, security industry permits). You can get funding of up to ?500 a year under the scheme. (However the maximum contribution that can be approved and paid for essential driver training is ?250.)You need to provide a quotation from the training provider. Generally the grant is paid after you have f inished the programme, done the relevant assessments and achieved certif ication.

New Loans Scheme Proposals Will Disproportionately Affect Those from Rural and Agricultural BackgroundsThe new proposed loan scheme will disproportionately affect those from rural and agricultural backgrounds, according to the Union of Students in Ireland and the Irish Farmers Association, who met last Friday.Commenting on the proposals Kevin Donoghue, USI president said, ?Any implementation of the new proposed loan scheme for students would disproportionately affect those from rural and agricultural backgrounds, deter them from applying to college, and widen the gap between urban and rural opportunities. People from rural backgrounds are more likely to be on 3rd level grants and so are more likely to be affected by the new proposals.?Mr Donoghue added, ?Introducing things like asset testing for grants and replacing grant payments with loans will disproportionately affect those in rural backgrounds and farmers. Students from rural and agricultural backgrounds already face higher costs than those who are from urban areas, especially with expenses like accommodation and transportation.?Commenting on the proposals IFA Farm Business Chairman Tom Doyle said, ?The farming community would not tolerate any changes which would result in children from low income farm families being excluded from third level grants.?There are currently 56 3rd level agricultural courses of offer, covering a range of cutting-edge contemporary technologies and approaches to modern farming in Ireland.Mr Doyle added, ?With a 45% increase in the value of food and drink exports achieved since 2009, Ireland?s agri-food sector has been a driving force of export growth and national economic recovery. The sectors performance and associated increased employment opportunities have resulted in a huge surge in enrolment numbers for agricultural and agri food courses. The Irish government needs to ensure equality of access to third level education for low income farm families to fully deliver on the potential and growth opportunities in the sector.?The agri-food sector in Ireland contributes a value of ?26bn (gross turnover) to the national economy, generates 7.6%[1] of gross value added (GVA)[2], almost 12.3% of Ireland?s exports and provides 8.6% of national employment. Due to low levels of import dependence, and profit repatriation on one hand and high levels of investment in the local economy on the other, the sector provides balanced growth which is been felt throughout the country.

Have a peep at some of the lovely things that were on offer last Friday at the Market. Lots of home baked, home grown and home made things. There were some lovely ideas for Mother's Day as well. Come along next Friday to buy your Mum a treat. Why not bring her with you?

Students set to undertake the ?Achill Experience? The Achill Experience brochure was launched at a reception in CFÁA (Comhlacht Forbartha Aitiuil Acla) attended by officials and councillors from Mayo County Council on Monday last, 22nd of February 2016. Cllr. Michael Holmes, Cathaoirleach of Mayo Co. Co. outlined that ?it was great to see this type of a badly needed facility being developed in Achill and that anything he or his colleagues in Mayo County Council could do to support it they would?. The brochures that were launched were specifically designed for schools and to attract school tours in the coming months. A package has been developed that will see teachers and pupils undertake a guided tour of the deserted village, learn about fish native to Achill and further afield in Mayo?s first Aquarium experience which is onsite as well as a rebuilt deserted village boley house which children will then try to build themselves in a specially designed tutor led workshop. The Achill experience is due to open mid-March with an official opening sometime afterwards and it has been developed by CFÁA with the support of BIM, Udaras na Gaeltachta, Failte Ireland, Mayo County Council, the Achill community and the Achill Diaspora. Fundraising is still underway and any individual or group that would like to support the project can do so by contacting Terence Dever at 098 43292.

Test egg freshness. Even though eggs have a ?use by? date, they often are perfectly fine beyond that date. You can test their freshness simply by seeing if they sink or swim. Fill a bowl with enough water to cover the eggs, and then gently place them in. If they sink, they?re fresh.

Dry out a wet cell phone. If your cell phone winds up in the wash or toilet, immediately remove the battery and memory chip. Place both the battery and phone in a bowl filled with enough uncooked rice to completely cover the items.

Leave for two to three days. Remove and use an old toothbrush or pastry brush to gently brush away any remaining rice dust so that it doesn?t get trapped in any portals or openings. You might have saved your phone!Fix a wood scratch with walnuts. For small scratches on your dark wood furniture, gently rub a walnut in a circular motion several times over the scratch. Let the natural oils seep into the scratch for five to 10 minutes. Buff with a clean cloth.Clean a toilet bowl with Alka-Seltzer. Drop two Alka-Seltzer or Polident effervescent tablets into the bowl. Let them fizz and remain for 15 to 20 minutes. Clean with a toilet brush scrubber and flush.Remove bubble gum from hair with creamy peanut butter. Before you snip those locks, reach for peanut butter? the oilier, the better! Put a dab on a toothbrush, and brush the gummy area. Use a little at a time. Repeat if necessary, and then shampoo. Plain oil works, too, but kids tend to get a kick out of peanut butter.Quiet squeaky doors with cucumber. Take a slice of cucumber, and rub it up and down several times all around the hinge. Have a clean cloth handy to wipe away any excess. I am not sure why it works? it just does!

Clean car tyres with mayonnaise. To rid your tyres of tree sap and road tar, dab a bit of mayonnaise onto the marks. Leave on for 10 minutes. Wipe away residue with a clean cloth. The vinegar in the mayo acts as a natural cleaner, and the oil and eggs add shine.Shine shoes and plants with bananas. Banana peels contain oil and potassium, key ingredients in store-bought shoe polish. Wipe shoes with the inside of the peel (discard the stringy parts of the peel first). Then buff with a clean cloth. You also can use the peels to clean the dust and debris from leafy houseplants.

Sad to hear the closure of the Welcome Inn Hotel this month, here is an old advert bringing back some great memories from 1993.This was the advert from the Castlebar Parish Magazine 1993

Castlebar Chamber has seen a new leader take over the reins. Sylvester Jennings, from Arcon Recruitment, stepped down after two years in charge at the annual general meeting in the Welcome Inn Hotel recently. He passed the baton to Wilson Bird, General Manager at Breaffy House Resort who set out his five-point plan for the coming year.

Mr Jennings oversaw the appointment of Mick Baynes as the town?s tourism and events co-ordinator in partnership with the local town council, during his term in office. In his final address he said this was a very important appointment for the town and the Chamber and was one which saw Mr Baynes provide necessary support to the town?s 30 plus annual events.Mr Jennings also spoke about the importance of Castlebar Chamber continuing its representation on the Mayo Chambers committee. In wishing the incoming President well Mr Jennings said: "It?s been a pleasure to have held the role of President of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce over the last two years. I wish Wilson the best of luck in his new role as President and also the new committee. They will continue the good work started under my term as President. The Chamber of Commerce is a vital part of the business community within Castlebar and hopefully this will continue into the future."In setting out his stall for 2016 the incoming President said it was vital that the Chamber continue to work in partnership with all of the agencies that are operational in the town.?There is a lot to be proud of in Castlebar and we want to ensure that this positive message is delivered to the people of Castlebar and those intending on visiting here,? added Mr Bird. His ambitions include increasing the Chamber membership and ensuring all areas of the town, including outlying areas, are included on the executive committee. He intends on decreasing the historical Chamber debt and wants to work at helping to better integrate the GMIT into the town.He will be joined on the committee by Vice President Caroline Gordon, secretary Kenneth O?Brien, treasurer Kenneth Irwin and PRO Bernard Hughes. Other members elected to the executive committee include Laura Hill, Michael Gill, Siobhan Foody, Donal Vaughan and Pat Staunton. The first meeting of the newly elected Chamber will take place in early March.

Castlebar based band, Jam Shugar will release their debut single on Friday, 11 March 2016 in Garbo's Music Venue, Castlebar. Jam Shugar formed early in 2014 when musician, Aidan Bolger met with talented singer, Julianne Hennelly at an Open mic session in Castlebar. The duo have been booking gigs and performing as a 2 piece acoustic set, and occasionally collaborating with other local musicians.Initially the duo spent time touring and performing in venues around the country, until in 2015 they decided to focus on playing more local gigs. It was also around this time that they began hosting original music nights in Garbo's Music Venue, providing a much needed platform for local musicians to present new and original music. With the success of the original music nights and the positive reactions, song writer Aidan Bolger began making home recordings and experimenting with many styles and genres, often adding humour and comedy to his lyrics. Bolger was one of the recipients of the Music Recording Assistance Award from Mayo County Council in October '15 and this has led to time working in a professional studio. The debut single from Jam Shugar is titled "The Paddy's Day Story" and is a comic perspective on St. Patrick's story. It's a Country/Folk song with melodic verses and a hearty, lively chorus. It was recorded and mastered in Green Fields Studio, Headford and will be available to download on iTunes from Friday, 11th March 2016. Limited edition CD's will be sold at the live shows.Following the release, Jam Shugar will be performing in venues around Mayo for the week surrounding St. Patrick's Day. UPCOMING GIGS include Fri. 11th - Garbo's, Castlebar (Along with Bowie tribute), Sat. 12th - Seven Arches Bar, Newport, Wed. 16th - Cobweb, Castlebar (Session with 4's & 9's), Thur. 17th - T. 2 celery sticks, roughly chopped 2 onions, sliced 1 large carrot, sliced 4 fresh bay leaves 1 tablespoon black peppercorns For the honey & mustard glaze: 2 tablespoons English mustard 1 tablespoons whole cloves 2 tablespoons brown sugar 3 tablespoons honey 1 small bottle cider (preferably Artisan) TOP TIPS Although hams tend to be much less salty nowadays,

soaking overnight is still a good idea. Weigh the ham and calculate the cooking time, allowing 15 minutes per 450g Place the ham in a large pan and cover with cold water. Leave to soak for at least 6 hours or

overnight is best, then drain. Place in a large pan and cover with water and bring to the boil, skimming off any scum. Add the celery, onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns and return to the boil, then cover, reduce the heat and simmer until completely tender, occasionally skimming off any scum that rises to the top. If you are not sure about whether the ham is properly cooked check the bone end ? it should come away freely. Leave to cool in the cooking liquid. Preheat the oven to 160°C/300°F/Gas Mark 3. Drain the ham ? the stock is a good basis for a soup. Carefully peel away the skin, leaving the layer of white fat intact. Using a sharp knife, score the fat in thin straight lines, being careful not to cut into the meat. Brush the fat with the mustard, then stud with the cloves and sprinkle the sugar on top. Finally drizzle over the honey and place in a large roasting tin. Pour around the cider and cook for 1 hour until golden, basting every 15 minutes to ensure an even glaze. Remove the cooked ham from the oven, transfer to a serving platter and leave to rest for 15 minutes. The lovely juices left in the pan can be used to make a gravy for the ham or added to your turkey gravy, once you?ve skimmed off any excess.
