Working in partnership with

Building the bridge We’re building a pedestrian footbridge, accessible to cyclists and wheelchair users, crossing the A63 between Princes Dock to the North and Humber Dock (Hull Marina) to the south.

This landmark bridge, part funded by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, is the first phase of the A63 Castle Street Improvements scheme.

The bridge aims to:

Help to support the local economy by better linking the city centre to the waterfront.

Be a landmark piece of infrastructure and architecture for the city of Hull.

Act as a strategic pedestrian and cyclist route to cross the A63 during the main A63 Castle Street scheme work.

The bridge design The bridge work includes:

Stepped and step free access to allow easy and free crossing by pedestrians, cyclists and disabled users over the A63.

 A landmark architectural design.

 Enhanced public urban realm.

Roger Millward WayEasing congestionWe also have plans to upgrade the roundabout at Roger Millward Way. The improvements at Roger Millward Way roundabout aim to:

Reduce congestion and smooth the flow of traffic to improve travel times, making journeys more reliable.

Improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists by including upgraded pedestrian and cycle facilities.

The solutionThe Roger Millward Way roundabout upgrade consists of:

Full signalisation of the roundabout construction of two lanes in either direction through the centre of the roundabout in a ‘hamburger’ type arrangement in an east/west direction.

 Improved pedestrian and cycle facilities.

Temporary traffic and pedestrian managementWhile both the bridge and Roger Millward Way roundabout improvements are being built, we’ll narrow the road, keeping the lanes safe by using temporary barriers. These narrower lanes are for the safety of drivers and the people who will be working close to the road.

We will always aim to keep two lanes of traffic flowing in both directions during peak times.

However, at some stages during the project it might be necessary to close sections of the A63 in our work area, for example lifting the

bridge into place and resurfacing Roger Millward Way roundabout. These will only be done at night to minimise disruption and we will ensure that the closures and diversion routes are well communicated in advance to local residents, businesses and the wider travelling public.

Pedestrian routes at both sites will be Equality Act 2010 compliant, well lit, guarded and signed. If there are any diversions required these will be well signed and communicated in advance to local residents and businesses.

Construction timetableThe bridge and Roger Millward Way roundabout improvements are being done together so one contractor can work on both schemes at the same time. This will help to minimise disruption and make the best use of the funds available.

We plan to start preparing the sites for construction in early October 2018, including setting up our satellite compound at Neptune Street, erecting site fences and clearing the construction areas.

Once we have established the construction sites, work can begin on constructing them. We aim to have Bridge complete by March 2020.

RMW expected to be complete by summer 2019, when the main A63 Castle Street scheme is expected to start on site.
