When the chips are down who would you trust – who would you follow?

Some key qualities of a leader might be their personal charisma, their passion for their cause, their knowledge and skills, their boldness and courage, their honesty and integrity – someone you would trust to ‘cover your back’ in the battle – brave, yet compassionate.

The reasons some people are drawn to leadership may be rather different. Individuals may seek material gain, fame and fortune, glory, and the honour of men. They may seek to exercise power and control over others or to boost their own egos.

The Church of England has just appointed a new Archbishop of Canterbury and the Roman Catholic church is just deciding on a new Pope so a discussion of ‘what makes a good leader’ seems appropriate. Hopefully those seeking high office in the church will show the ‘qualities’ of my first list rather the ‘reasons’ of my second list and those making appointments will see through the second and seek the first.

The greatest single leader of all time is Jesus Christ. Jesus encapsulates all the good qualities of a true leader

but avoided the trappings of personal power and ego.

Most of us will follow a person who will identify with us, who will lead from the front, a person who takes personal risks even laying their own life on the line if need be.

True leadership and power is shown in being a servant and in personal sacrifice – preparing to give everything,

even their very selves, for the cause and for the good of others.

In the time of Lent we remember how Jesus fasted in the desert and was tempted to exercise his divine power: to comfort his

hunger; to prove his credentials; and have total authority over the kingdoms

of the earth. Each time Jesus turns down

the temptation and becomes the leader who will be the servant, who will make the sacrifice; the leader who will carry his cross

for those whom he leads; the one who will bear the burden, even to death on the cross; the one who, on that first Easter day, rose again to give us the assurance of sins forgiven and the hope of heaven. The one who doesn’t order us to sign up but asks us to follow.

So the question is: ‘will we follow this leader?’Rev’d Roger Aston

CassingtonWomen’sInstituteOn a bitterly cold winter’s night, members gathered in the village hall.

Due to the bad weather and some of our members seeking out faraway sunshine holidays our numbers were low. This was such a pity as our guest speaker was Bill Heine from Radio Oxford.

After a brief introduction Bill began by telling us that he had started his career in an unusual way. He was reading law at Balliol College, Oxford. Founded in the 13th century by John de Balliol, this is one of the three oldest Oxford colleges and boasts two ex-prime ministers amongst its graduates – Edward Heath and Harold Macmillan. Bill fell in love with Oxford and took lodgings opposite the radio station. One thing lead to another and eventually he ended up at the radio station, where he has been ever since. He has written a book, called Heinstein of the Airwaves, and for the next three-quarters of an hour he dipped into the book and selected a few anecdotes, which entertained us. We all laughed, especially when he reminded us of his first book about the famous shark sticking out of his roof. We then asked him various questions and Rosemary Nailer gave the vote of thanks.

After a break for refreshments, we began the business side of the meeting. We were reminded that March will be our Annual Meeting and members were encouraged to think about serving on the committee.

In addition we will be holding our Spring Jumble Sale on 23rd March.

Truck SafetyYou may have noticed a large green truck parked outside the school in January. (We apologise if this caused any problems to residents.) The two drivers in charge of the truck are part of a scheme to educate children about the dangers of trucks. They talked to all of the children in school and demonstrated that drivers could not see pedestrians and cyclists when they were in certain positions – the four blind spots. They also demonstrated how a truck driver cannot hear noises outside whilst they are driving. One demonstration, which made everyone think very hard, was when the truck ran over a traffic cone and squashed it. Mr Long, class teacher in Willow Class, sat in the cab and started the engine up. He also looked through the windscreen to see if he could see his class of 30 children who were standing right in front of the truck. He could not see or hear them when they made a terrific noise. We are hoping that as the children get older, and cycle by themselves, they will remember what they found out about being safe around trucks.

Fairy TalesOur focus last term was based around fairy tales and the children did some wonderful work around the theme. The activities included listening to fairy tales, writing their own, finding out about authors and turning fairy tales into play scripts. In music

Maple and Willow Class studied ‘Peter and the Wolf’ and Oak Class watched a theatre group.

The culmination of the term was a dressing up day. The children and staff came dressed as fairy tale characters with some outstanding costumes. There were Jacks with their beanstalks, Red Riding Hoods with baskets and an assortment of dwarves, Snow Whites, handsome princes, beautiful princesses and woodcutters. There was even a wolf, wizard, witch and Mad Hatter. Well done to all of the parents and children.

That evening, the majority of the children came back to school for a disco. Our two experienced DJs, Aaron Mills and Lily Rose Harvey, did a wonderful job of playing exciting (and loud) music. The event was organised by the St Peter’s School Parents Association, who supplied the fizzy drinks and cups of tea and coffee for the watching adults.

Future EventsOur Easter Service is on Wednesday 27th March at 1.30pm in St Peter’s Church. Following the service there will be an Easter Bonnet Parade and Easter Tea at school (hopefully outside if the weather is good). All welcome.

Cassington Tennis Club 2013

The tennis courts are looking better than ever after some work this week to repair some weed damage and we have

some replacement nets in the pipeline.I wondered if there were any keen tennis

players out there who might be interested in running the tennis club this year or organising some group activities or some group coaching sessions, as we have done in previous years.

I have been responsible for the courts for a number of years now along with other members of the Sports and Social Club but we would welcome input from someone who can actually play the game!

Please give me a ring or send me an email if you are interested.

A hair salon in Cassington?

Here at Longlands nursing home we are converting one room into a

hair salon for the residents. The salon will be staffed one day a fortnight by a professional hairdresser/stylist. We

are exploring the idea, and trying to gauge the demand, of opening the services of the salon to any non-residents in the village who find it difficult to attend a hairdresser elsewhere. If you or someone you know might find this service helpful please contact us at Longlands to express your interest by phoning Tina on 01865 881440.

Helping more people get creative

Residents of a care home in Woodstock have been learning new skills ranging from felt-making to jewellery crafting as part of a scheme to get more communities involved in creative activities.

Elderly residents at Spencer Court have been learning craft techniques after getting involved in West Oxfordshire District Council’s ‘Taking Part’ project.

Oxfordshire artist Helen Jacobs has been visiting residents weekly to introduce them to different crafts and give them the opportunity to get creative.

Taking Part was launched in 2010 by the District Council to give groups and communities the chance to access a range of workshops and activities. So far, 28 groups in West Oxfordshire have benefitted from the scheme.

Taking Part is an exciting, inclusive project which reaches out to people who may not otherwise have the chance to get involved in these activities.

Taking Part includes a ‘menu’ of activities for groups and communities to choose from, ranging from ceramics to singing, animation to sculpture and dance to poetry. It may be possible for groups to receive funding from the council to help towards the cost of their chosen activity.

Anyone wishing to get involved or find out more about Taking Part can call 01993 861080 or visit the council’s website: www.westoxon.gov.uk/takingpart.

Successful interactive drugs, alcohol and internet safety event

Twelve and thirteen-year olds from secondary schools across West Oxfordshire took part in a successful interactive drugs, alcohol and internet safety awareness event – and it was all their own idea.

The Year 8 students came up with the suggestion after attending last year’s popular young people’s Have Your Say Day in Witney. They asked for further information using ‘real life’ situations to help them cope when faced with alcohol, drugs and internet bullying.

Run by youth workers from Oxfordshire County Council’s The Hub, Witney, and Base 33 Youth Trust, Witney, in conjunction with the Community Safety Partnership, the two-hour interactive sessions took small groups through various scenarios they may encounter.

These included getting students to wear ‘beer goggles’ while trying to walk in a straight line to show the effects of drink and drugs and attending a make believe party where they were put under pressure to drink and take drugs. They also watched and commented on a film about internet safety, focusing on ‘cyber bullying’ and being cautious about who they are talking to in internet chat rooms.

Business recycling commitment

Oxfordshire councils have signed a national commitment to ensure businesses in the county receive dedicated support to meet the challenge of the 3R’s: Reduce Reuse and Recycle.

Working through Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP), all six Oxfordshire councils have committed to provide local businesses with access to recycling collections and offer services that meet their needs as well as offering value for money.

Research has identified a range of barriers to greater participation in recycling by small businesses, including a lack of awareness of recycling services, a perception that contracts are inflexible, and doubts as to whether materials are being recycled, or just end up in landfill. Oxfordshire councils want to do something about this to encourage more businesses to participate in schemes that work for them.

Businesses benefit financially from operating more efficiently and reducing waste is an essential part of this. Businesses audits and advice for reduction, a reuse website called retrader.org.uk and access to recycling services are all available.

Prisoner of war memories wanted

A child’s necklace and a pair of soldier’s dog-tags...what do these have in common? Both of these very personal items belonged to a Prisoner of War (POW) during World War II, but each tells a different story.

These mementos are now being looked after by The Soldiers of Oxfordshire (SOFO) Trust Museum in Woodstock. An exhibition about POW experiences is planned and the museum is appealing to the public for help in bringing the new museum to life.

The necklace was given to a young girl during the war, having been made by a German POW held at a local camp. It was donated, along with other hand-made pieces by Rosemary Warner from Witney. Local POWs often made toys and children’s playthings to sell for a little extra cash.

The dog-tags are a reminder of one young man’s time in the Stalag Luft III camp, now in Poland, and infamous for the ‘Great Escape’. Sgt Leslie Mitchell from Woodstock was captured aged just 19 after his plane came down in 1940. He remained a prisoner until 1945, moved from camp to camp around the German occupied territories. All the time he kept in touch with home, and the letters sent to him provide a fascinating insight into war-time Oxfordshire.

The Trust is currently building its museum in the grounds of The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock, with completion due by the end of 2013. With over 3,500 objects and a history that starts with the Hill Forts of Oxfordshire, the new Museum will offer inspiring opportunities for all visitors especially families and schools to explore the county’s role in conflict both here and around the world. If you have personal memories of POWs during the Second World War or if you were a prisoner yourself, SOFO would like to hear from you. SOFO would also be interested in hearing about experiences of relatives who were POWs. The trust is seeking first-hand accounts, memorabilia, written memoirs, photos, letters, and other items relating to POWs. It wants to tell the story of local men held in POW camps, and of how the influx of German and Italian POWs also affected life in the county – to do so it needs the assistance of Oxfordshire residents to help it build the story.

If you can help in any way, the trust would be very pleased to hear from you. Please contact Sue Cross on 01993 813832, email [email protected], or write to Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, The Old Tannery, Hensington Road, Woodstock OX20 1JL.

People power

Cherwell and West Oxfordshire District Councils are joining forces to help people save money on their energy bills through the new ‘Better Together’ campaign. The campaign aims to build up a large group of householders to whom energy companies then offer a cheap deal on gas and electricity.

Run by iChoosr, a intermediary which has operated similar schemes elsewhere in the UK and in Europe, the campaign is led by Cherwell and West Oxfordshire District Councils to help Oxfordshire residents with spiralling energy costs and to tackle the problem of fuel poverty.

Householders register with the campaign then iChoosr runs an auction amongst the energy companies, who bid to offer the cheapest prices to the group. No one is obliged to switch supplier; at this stage the councils just want interested

parties to register so they can get the best rate.Once the auction has taken place the council steps back to

allow you to decide whether to switch to the new deal, after comparing the price to your current utility costs. You will still pay your own bills but hopefully they’ll be lower.

You’ll need a copy of your latest gas and electricity bill so the council can compare prices for you. The rest of the work is done by iChoosr who will contact individuals once they have the deal.

You have until 8th April to register either online at www.bettertogetheroxfordshire.co.uk, by calling the freephone number: 0800 107 0044, or in person at:• Exeter Hall Link Point, Kidlington OX5 1AB, open

8.45am (10am Wednesday) to 5.15pm Monday to Friday• Town Centre Shop, Witney OX28 6JH, open 9am to 5pm

THE HALL (The Tolkien Room) is available for hire. Tel: 01865 464320

Holy Week and Easter is the most important time of the Christian year.

ITBEGINSONPALMSUNDAY (March 24th) when we have a Procession with Palm Branches to relive the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem whilst the people waved palm branches. The Mass that follows includes a dramatised reading from the Bible of the whole of the Holy Week story. All are welcome.

THEEASTERTRIDUUM follows. All welcome at these servicesHolyThursday (Mar 28th) – mass of the Lord’s Supper 7.30pmGoodFriday (Mar 29th) – the Good Friday Liturgy 3.00pmHolySaturday (Mar 30th) – Easter Vigil & Easter Mass 8.30pm

ONHOLYTHURSDAYwe gather at 7.30pm for Mass where we remember special events of that last evening that Jesus spent with his disciples. First, after the Homily, the Priest washes the feet of 12 people, as Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, taking the role of a servant rather than a king. Then, after receiving Holy Communion, we hold a solemn Procession within the Church to the place that will act as the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus watched and prayed in preparation for the horror of the cross that he knew he was about to experience. Various people come for half an hour or more to watch right up to Midnight, and others are welcome to come in and pray with us.

GOOD FRIDAY finds the Church building stripped of all its finery in mourning for the death of Christ. The Liturgy is at 3.00pm, the time of his death. The priest wears red – to remember the sacrificial blood of Jesus – and we read the whole story of the suffering and death of Jesus from the Bible as told by St John. Then we kneel in turn before a figure of Jesus on the cross, as we sing of his love for us, and those who wish to kiss the cross.

HOLYSATURDAY sees us gathering in the dark at 8.30pm. The Easter Fire is lit outside the Church and then we follow the light of the great Easter Candle – the symbol of the risen Jesus

– into the darkened Church. We read various passages from the Bible in semi-darkness until finally the Easter bells ring out, the lights come on and we begin to sing the joys of Easter proper. Then we renew the promises of our Baptism before receiving our Easter Communion

OUREASTERSUNDAYMASS is at 10am, as on every Sunday, and once again includes the renewal of our Baptismal promises followed by the sprinkling with the new Baptismal water.

WEPREPAREFORHOLYWEEK with a Penitential Service on Thursday 21st March at 8pm. Our visiting preacher will be the Very Rev. John O’Connor, the Prior of Blackfriars. Father Martin and Father John will be available to hear Confessions after this service.

CONFESSIONSBEFOREEASTER on Thursday 21st March at 8pm, on Palm Sunday, 24th March, after Mass, on Sat 23rd March at 11.30am & 6.45pm and Holy Saturday, 30th March, at 11.30 am

TWOJOINTSERVICES are held in Holy Week with our fellow Christians in Eynsham. The first is at the Village Hall for the elderly of the day centre and their family and friends on Monday 25th March at 1.45pm. The second is on Good Friday at 10am in the square, when we hold a service of praise and witness.

AFAREWELLSERVICE for the Baptist Minister, Jean Andrews, will be held at St Peter’s on Saturday 2nd March at 2.30pm. We are very happy to host this event as we hosted her Ordination. tea and cakes will follow in the Baptist Church Hall.

FOLLOWINGTOMOURORGANIST All are welcome to an evening event on Friday 8th March at 7.30pm when we will be able to see a special presentation of photographs taken of the USA last year, following our previous organist Tom Von Kaenel on his the Cycle Ride from West to East.
