FAQ - 5Ws & 1H
• What else in HBS 62368-x family? Who are they?
• Who (Which country) has already adopted it as national
standards?
• When will them be effective?
• What are those changes expected in the next edition (3rd) of
IEC 62368-1?
• How to manage the potential impact & a better transition?

Global Adoption of IEC62368-1 2nd Edition (as of June, 2015)
Proposal for revised technical requirement for Clause 6.4.8 Fire Enclosures and Barriers of IEC 62368-1.
ASSESSING SIDE OPENINGS AS BOTTOM OPENINGS PER IEC62368
Illustration 1 (Side View) - With a PIS at the edge ofthe component zone, the bottom portion of theflame cone extends through the side vents
Illustration 2 (Rear View) - With a PIS at the edgeof the component zone, the bottom portion of theflame cone extends through the side vents
Complies with
IEC60950 5 degree rule
ASSESSING SIDE OPENINGS AS TOP OPENINGS PER IEC62368

the top portion of the flame cone (cone straight with no airflow
considerations) extends through the side vents

Proposal for revised technical requirement for Clause 6.4.8 Fire Enclosures and Barriers of IEC 62368-1.
• IMPACT: Manufacturers and industry are faced with:
– Retooling chassis’ s of existing products to meet IEC62368 fire enclosure requirements to reduce size of side ventilation openings;
– Increase fan speeds to generate more air volume to hopefully generate enough cooling with regards to more restrictive ventilation opening sizes
– The need for faster fan speeds will increase product power and acoustic noise (increase in power will pose additional challenges with regards to energy efficiency and cooling standards)
– At the data center infrastructure level industry consortiums already are raising significant challenge concerns for cooling, power delivery, acoustics and energy consumption, server farm upgrades, etc.
• Proposed Changes:
– 5 Degree Rules – Adding back
• The IEC60950 5 degree rule for side opening (IEC 60950-1, Figure 4E) is a proven safeguard that maintains the integrity of the fire enclosure. This construction has been used in IT equipment for many years and has been shown to be effective. It is also used in other product safety standards including IEC 60601 for medical devices.
– 45 Degree Airflow Considerations - Remove from IEC62368-1 3rd ed.
• The current 6.4.7.2/Fig. 39 air flow requirements were added to 62368-1 to address the theoretical influence of airflow on the application of separation requirements (fire cone). However, in their present form these requirements have more of a theoretical basis than they allow for practical application. (TR 62368-2 (4.7.2/Fig 30) provides theoretical rationale only, but no Source of the requirements, nor reference to actual research.)2368-1
