What is 62368-1, background
• 62368 was developed by IEC TC108;
• While it is new to most of us TC108 has been working on this since 2002;
• The 1st edition was released in January of 2010 as an IEC standard
– Was not well received (only the US and 4 other countries)
– TC108 suggested that the 1st ed. be adopted not earlier than five years

What 62368-1 is NOT
• 62368 is HAZARD based not RISK based:
– Does not require or (typically) utilize an ISO/IEC
Guide 51 based or ISO 14971 (60601) type risk
management assessment
• Not a direct merging of 60065 and 60950
– Incorporates Hazard based concepts
– Has both requirements and compliance criteria
• Performance based and/or prescribed constructions

conditions.

conditions) the Current limit is undefined.

If the source Voltage is less than the ES 1 Voltage

62368 and the O.J.• Note 2.1: The new (or amended) standard
has the same scope as the superseded standard. On the date stated, the superseded standard ceases to give presumption of conformity with the essential or other requirements of the relevant Union legislation
