Ecotrax Polymer Railway Sleepers Construction Sector Group Publication Updated: January 2016 Overview The replacement of timber sleeper with ones made from recycled polymers. Details Location Stonebridge Park (London Underground Depot). Description Replacement of timber with recycled polymers sleepers. Client London Underground. Date of project 2014 Where FRP composites are used and why Ecotrax sleepers were used due to their improved durability, toughness, and sustainability compared to treated timber sleepers. The polymers sleepers make use of waste polymer material with otherwise no commercial value, and can be recycled at end of life avoiding any future landfill charges. Specific design details The recycled polymers sleepers were installed on plain line, turn-outs and expansion switches. The sleeper dimensions were 150mm x 250mm or 300mm, with lengths ranging from 2.6m to 4.8m. Handling and installation (drilling, cutting and fastening) requirements have been demonstrated to be similar to that for timber. Type of composite used The Ecotrax sleepers were manufactured by Sicut, using a highly engineered and unique mixture of high density polyethylene and polypropylene plastic, common in household waste streams such as detergent bottles and shampoo containers. The resulting polymer sleepers are completely recyclable, directly reducing UK waste and landfill, and reducing the need for timber. Performance in service Ecotrax sleepers have been in use on the London Underground network for over a year and have performed well. Ecotrax sleepers have been installed on railway networks in over 16 countries, with over 2 billion cumulative tonnes of rolling stock passing over them and no reported failures over a 20 year period. Ecotrax sleepers were used due to their improved durability, toughness, and sustainability compared to treated timber sleepers.
