JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY
GRA SELLI TOWER
J ohn Carroll University, located in one of Cleveland's newer res idential subU'rbs, University Heights, occupies seven imposing building and fifty acres of campu . Gothic type in architecture, the structure are completely furnished wit h modern equipment and faci lities. Two buildings are devoted entirely to science.
John Carroll began her educational work in 1886 when the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) e tabli hed itself in Cleveland by opening St. Ignatius Coll ege on the city's West Side.
In 1890 the college was incorporated under t he laws of Ohio and legally empowered to confer the usual degrees of arts and cience .
In 1896 a meterological observatory came into exi tence under the noted seismologist, the Rev. Frederick L. Odenbach, S.J. Eight year later
19
the Carroll seismological observatory was established, thus becoming the fourth observatory of its kind to be founded in the United States. It now rank among t he top ten sei. mological station in the country.
Late in December, 1935, after an intensive fund-raising campaign had achieved success for a building program, the univer ity taff and students moved to their sparkling new quarters and plant in University Heights. Ten years later provision was made for a School of Business, Economics and Government to be added to the long-standing College of Arts and Science .
Expanding enrollment, enlargement of curricula and continued implementation of a whole-orne educational philo ophy have since fur ther
combined to give John Carroll Univer ity a permanently sub tantial reputation for ound advanced education.

JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY
GRASSELU TOWER
J ohn Carroll Universit y, located in one of Cleveland'. newer residential subU'l·bs, University Heights, occupies seven imposing building and fifty acres of campus. Gothic type in architecture, the tructure are completely furnished with modern eq uipment and faci litie . Two buildings are devoted entirely to science.
John Carroll began her educational work in 1 86 when the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) establi hed it elf in Cleveland by opening St. Ignatius College on the city's West Side.
In 1890 t he college wa incorporated under t he laws of Ohio and legally empowered to confer the u ual degrees of arts and sciences.
In 1896 a meterological observatory came into existence under the noted eismologi t, the Rev. F rederick L. Odenbach, .J. Eight year later
19
the Carroll seismological observatory was established, thus becoming t he fourth observatory of its kind to be fo unded in the United States. It now rank among t he top ten ei mological stations in the country .
Late in December, 1935, after an intensive fund-raising campaign had achieved success for a building program, the univer ity staff and students moved to their sparkling new quarters and plant in University Heights. Ten years later provision wa made for a School of Business, Economics and Government to be added to the long-standing College of Arts and Sciences.
Expanding enrollment, enlargement of curricula and continued implementation of a wholesome educational phi lo ophy have since fur ther combined to give John Carroll University a permanently ubstantial r eputation for sound advanced education.
