Educational Resources Archive
During a summer with the North Carolina Archives and History Department, I had the privilege to produce a online archive for middle school students and teachers. The site functions as a hub for lesson plans, worksheets, and original source documents used in the classroom. NC students are able to see, first hand, images of their state’s history straight from the source. All content is based on curriculum standards for middle schools in North Carolina and has been active in classrooms since July 2009. www.archives.ncdcr.gov/educationalresources Designed Summer 2009

US EPA
As the web content manager at EPA’s National Exposure Research Laboratory, I was tasked with reformating all lab websites into EPA’s new template. This involved restructuring all sites to have a uniform look and feel within the lab, and within the larger organizational structure. I’ve also designed print materials promoting new research coming from the Office of Research and Development. www.epa.gov Designed 2010-2012

Performative Design : Case Study
As a member of a small student-based research group, I worked with PhD candidate Matthew Peterson producing performative print design for K-12 education. “Performative” describes designed objects, in this case worksheets or diagrams, that ask their users to perform in a particular way. These objects aim to prompt actions through visual cues and build on an experiential knowledge base, contributing to what could be called a “schema” for that information.
Using Matthew’s research as an entry point, the group visited an 8th grade classroom, met with the instructor, and discussed the needs that could be met through performative print work. We worked individually and in pairs to produce the following:
Individual Task : Performative Framework Diagram Each group member was assigned an individual task prior to our group work. My task was to better acquaint the group with a “Text-Image Relationship Model”. The model describes an abstract concept (how our minds interpret text and image) with concrete, metaphorical examples. 49”× 21” | Designed Spring 2009
Group Task : Marine Food Webs Activity Sheets Each member of the group was paired with a partner to produce one element of a package given to the 8th grade classroom. Stephanie Jansen and I were responsible for the Marine Food Webs activities. 11”×17” laser prints | Designed Spring 2009
