The Islamic date on this piece apparently reads 1358[AH]; this would give what would seem to be a much later Western dating than the fragment suggests, i.e. 1939AD. Estimate: £300.00 - £400.00

Lot: 1627Attractive Ushak 'fancy Turkey' carpet, west Anatolia late 19th-early 20th century, 15ft.5in. x 12ft.3in. 4.70m. x 3.73m. Very slight wear in places, small holes and minor splits lower end.Estimate: £3,500.00 - £5,000.00

Lot: 1628An impressive Esfahan carpet, west Persia about 1920-30, 14ft.10in. x 10ft.11in. 4.52m. x 3.33m. Some wear, mainly in centre. The lower fifth of the carpet has been cut from the main body. It is present and sold with the main section; however, this lower fragment has itself been cut in two and there is a narrow vertical strip approximately 5 inches (13cm.) wide missing between the two; there is also a minimal loss of no more than 1 or 2 cm. between the fragments and the main body of the carpet and the larger of the two lower fragments has small losses to both left corners. As is often the case with comparatively early Esfahan 'Revivalist' weaving, this carpet bears little resemblance to the later style of medallion rug associated primarily with the work of Serafian and other well known Esfahani master weavers. Although the 'drawing' is not so complex, its greater simplicity and boldness, combined with a superbly rich and varied palette, adds greatly to the overall power and grace of the design. (3)Estimate: £500.00 - £800.00

Lot: 1629A large and impressive Modernist tapestry, monogram 'G' (?) lower left corner, probably English 1960-70, 14ft.7in. x 6ft.9in. 4.45m. x 2.05m.Estimate: £200.00 - £400.00

Lot: 1632Ushak 'Waterloo' Turkey carpet, west Anatolia early 20th century, 13ft.10in. x 11ft.6in. 4.22m. x 3.50m. Very slight even wear in field. Although the design is familiar, the brilliant and varied palette of this example is most unusual.Estimate: £800.00 - £1,000.00

Lot: 1633Mashad carpet, Khorasan, north east Persia about 1930, 13ft.6in. x 12ft.2in. 4.12m. x 3.71m. Slight uneven wear in places. Note signature top centre.Estimate: £200.00 - £400.00

Lot: 1635Chinese carpet, probably Beijing about 1950, 13ft.5in. x 10ft.5in. 4.09m. x 3.17m. Note the ton-sur-ton floral sprays on the ground in a slightly paler shade of green, rendered with such extraordinary subtlety that they are almost sensed rather than seen.Estimate: £500.00 - £600.00

Lot: 1636Ushak 'fancy Turkey' carpet, west Anatolia about 1920, 13ft.4in. x 10ft.11in. 4.0m. x 3.33m. Uneven wear in places, small area of damage centre left.Estimate: £600.00 - £700.00

Lot: 1638Portuguese needlework carpet, early to mid 20th century, 13ft.2in.x 9ft.8in. 4.01m. x 2.94m. Small stain at edge of one long border.Estimate: £200.00 - £300.00

Lot: 1639An early Heriz carpet, north west Persia about 1900, 13ft.2in. x 9ft.3in. 4.01m. x 2.82m. Uneven wear in places, foundations brittle in places, small distressed area lower right corner of field with damage and loss, upper end distressed with small hole to top of field, centre and loss of most of main and outer borders. Despite its condition, this is an old Heriz with superb colour; it is extremely dirty and will, no doubt, respond well to cleaning.Estimate: £150.00 - £250.00

Lot: 1640Attractive Ziegler-Mahal carpet, Arak (Sultanabad), north west Persia about 1890-1910, 12ft.11in. x 10ft. 3.94m. x 3.05m. Overall uneven wear, small section rewoven lower end centre. A carpet with beautiful colour. The asymmetric knotting on a cotton foundation is typical of carpets woven in Mahallat (Mahal), one of the principle weaving towns of Sultanabad province and one of the towns where Ziegler had looms; however, neither the rich palette nor the bold design (and note the unusual ton-sur-ton arabesque in the field) are characteristic of carpets usually attributed to late 19th century Mahal and are much more typical of early Ziegler carpets from the town of Sultanabad itself.Estimate: £600.00 - £800.00

Lot: 1641Heriz carpet, north west Persia early 20th century, 12ft.11in. x 8ft.11in. 3.94m. x 2.72m. Small areas of minor wear.

In both design and palette, this small long carpet is truly remarkable; it has at least 17 different colours, none of which shows any sign of tip fade or other indication of a synthetic origin, a testimony the Bakhtiari's reputation as the master dyers of Iran. The design, a repeat of three rows of an heraldic-like motif with an asymmetric arrangement of enamel-like leaf attachments and with a similar random arrangement of 'filler' ornaments, is one for which we can find no direct parallel in the literature; indeed, the closest relations in terms of design are certain Caucasian rugs from the Kuba region. Rugs of this overall design with long narrow field largely free of decoration are called met-hane and are associated primarily with Talish; however, the structure of this example suggests a more westerly origin in the Kazak area It should be noted that the dating of such rugs has become increasingly fraught over the last two decades as the number of examples woven both in the Caucasus and Iran using unravelled wool from old rugs and intended to deceive the unwary buyer has reached epidemic proportions, not to mention old rugs so heavily re-piled as to be virtually new. However, we can see no reason to doubt the authenticity of this handsome example.Estimate: £1,500.00 - £1,800.00

Overall uneven wear, dark brown unevenly corroded, hole base of lower right 'spandrel', both ends ragged with losses. A rug with an unusual design, some elements of which suggest a Sewan origin although a Fachralo provenance seems just as likely or even to the area of Nagorny Karabakh where the so-called Kasim Usag rugs were made. Whatever its provenance, both its design and its all-vegetable palette indicate that it well pre-dates the commercialisation of Caucasian rugs in the Kustar workshop project from the late 1880s onwards.Estimate: £250.00 - £350.00

Lot: 1995Akstafa prayer rug, south east Caucasus about 1900, 5ft.10in. x 3ft.1in. 1.78m. x 0.94m. Overall even wear.Estimate: £1,000.00 - £1,200.00

Lot: 1998Karadagh runner, south west Caucasus about 1900, 13ft.2in. x 3ft.5in. 4.01m. x 1.04m. Some confusion has been caused by the Karadagh nomenclature. The place itself is just north of the Iranian border and is known primarily for rugs that, like this example, bear a distinctive irregular octagon with 'turreted' outline, here with a pale blue ground and alternating with more regular red octagons with hooked extensions; however, the irregular octagon is a motif also particularly associated with rugs from Karaja, a village in the Heriz area of north west Persia. There seems to be an unexplained coincidence between the names and it may be that the very handsome runner offered here is in fact from the Kazak region.Estimate: £900.00 - £1,200.00

Lot: 1999Kazak rug, south west Caucasus about 1900-10, 7ft.5in. x 5ft.3in. 2.26m. x 1.60m. Slight wear in places.Estimate: £600.00 - £800.00

Lot: 2003Kazak rug, south west Caucasus about 1890-1910, 5ft.2in.x 3ft.10in. 1.58m. x 1.17m. Slight even wear overall, repiling in several small areas.Estimate: £400.00 - £600.00

Lot: 2046Attractive Fars(?) rug, south west Persia about 1900, 6ft.11in. x 5ft. 2.11m. x 1.52m. Overall even wear, losses to lower end. The exact origin of this charming rug is not immediately apparent. With fine symmetric knotting it has a subtle palette of some thirteen distinct colours - pink, red, brown-red, orange, yellow, dark brown, mid brown, grey-brown (main border ground), dark blue (main field ground, abrashed), light blue, dark green, light green, ivory - all of which, including the pink and orange, appear to be natural. It has a distinctive version of the gul farangi bouquet in the field and an equally distinctive rendering of the shudur (almond blossom) pattern in the principal guards; even the main border contains what appears to be a 'naturalistic' rendering of the so-called bazoobandi (armlet) pattern found in different forms on many Fars tribal and village rugs. All in all, its use of several motifs and patterns, albeit idiosyncratic versions, associated with Fars weavings, suggest that it may be the work of an Arab or Khamseh group in that vast province with its wide ethnic diversity and hundreds of villages and towns of various sizes. A Kurdish origin from further to the northwest of Persia is also possible but seems to us less likely.Estimate: £450.00 - £550.00

Lot: 2047Jaf Kurd khorjin face, north west Persia early 20th century, 2ft.3in. x 2ft.4in. 0.69m. x 0.71m.Estimate: £100.00 - £150.00

Persia about 1900, 7ft.6in. x 4ft. 2.29m. x 1.22m. and 5ft. x 2ft.11in. 1.52m. x 0.89m. Both with overall uneven wear, the first heavier, the second with small area of damage and loss upper left corner. The smaller rug is possibly the earlier of the two and has rich saturated colour and very fine wool. (2)Estimate: £100.00 - £150.00

Lot: 2052Kurdish rug, Quchan region, Khorasan, north east Persia early 20th century, 5ft.6in. x 3ft.8in. 1.68m. x 1.12m. Damage and losses, particularly to long side panels, top flat weave section missing, end panels with original leather trim and separated, original red plain weave base. Lot: 2054An unusual and attractive Bakhtiari ghileem, in double interlock tapestry weave, Chahar Mahal Valley or Fars, south west Persia late 19th-early 20th century, 5ft. x 3ft.4in. 1.52m. x 1.02m. Slight overall wear.Estimate: £100.00 - £200.00

Lot: 2055Rare and attrctive Shahsavan rug, north west Persia or southern Caucasus, second half 19th century, 6ft.4in. x 4ft.1in. 1.93m. x 1.25m. Overall uneven wear, small hole upper left, slight damage to sides in small areas upper right and lower left, small 'bite' upper end left. The attribution of pile rugs to the Shahsavan remains speculative. However, this charming rug, clearly the work of a semi-nomadic tribal group, has both the intense colour and some of the slightly idiosyncratic designs features associated with the Shahsavan. Among the latter, the sinuous minor border design is one unusual element while the highly stylised animal processions in the top and bottom main borders are elements which are characteristic of Shahsavan weaving. Admittedly, it is difficult to pin down the elements which point to a Shahsavan origin - a look at one of the few short studies of Shahsavan pile weavings by Parviz Tanavoli in Hali 45 pp.30-37 will demonstrate this - but the present rug seems to fit most of the design, colour and structural characteristics satisfactorily.Estimate: £200.00 - £400.00
