The bull is a symbol for the Patriarch and the pigs for the lords. They were shown to the people in the square, mocked and then the bull was beheaded.

9 THE ‘SVOLO DEL LEON’13 Feb 2018 @ 17:00 to 18:00, Saint Mark’s SquareCelebrating the highest tribute to the Leone di San Marco, symbol of our city, as a lion painted on a large canvas will fly up to the bell tower over the audience in the Square. To welcome him, on stage of San Marco, twelve young ladies from Venezia, the “Marie” will greet the flag.
