V Carney Will Shed Nortonisms V-^K ART CARNEY of Yonkers will play Lord Fancourt Babberly in Playhouse 90s version of "Char- ley's Ayrtt" tonight on channel 2. By STEVEN H. SCHEUER . "There aren't going to be any Norton mannerisms in this role— unless I forget," said Art darney, of Yonkers, who's playing Lord Fancourt Babberly in Playhouse 90s version of "Charley's Aunt," tonight. Ed Norton, rather .Art Carney, is in good company. "The cast is wonderful," he said, "Orson Bean, Richard Haydn. Tom Tryon, Jackie Coogan, .Melville Cooper, Jeanette MacDonald, Gone R a y m o n-d. Haydn is a perfect Sjx>ttigue. He really breaks me up." Carney* had a little trouble ini- tially before, he was cleared for the role. Playhouse 90 wanted him and Art wanted the pact. The show was originally scheduled for later in the season but moved up so Art would have time to do it during Jackie Gleason's three-week vacation. The trouble was with the sjxmsors. The. Gleason show has one cigaret spon- sor and Playhouse 90 has another. h looked for a while as though Art couldn't commit that sin of ap- pearing on a show sponsored by a competing cigaret company. But it was ironed out. Norton Like Father "That's the first thing my agent asks when I'm offered a role— who's your sponsor? I've lost a number of parts because of this," said Carney. Asked where he picked up some of the mannerisms Norton uses, like the lengthy -flourishes of the hands be/ore Norton signs his sig- nature or does some writing, Art said: "It came to me in rehearsal. Suddenly I remembered my father doing that." Art shot his cuffs, wiggled his hands and went through his delightful routine. "I call it the warmup. My father made it very impressive.' - Art doesn't say rnuch about his future plans next year. "My con- tract's up with Gleason in July," he said, "and Jackie doesn't want to do a weekly show next year. But whatever he does I hope I can do something with him if I'm not signed up by another network." Writes Own Material Quite a few months ago, when NBC's "Tonight" show was an en- tertaining bit of nighttime televi- sion under the guidance of Steve Allen. Betty Walker made a guest appearance to plug the Broadway show "Middle Of The Night" in which she appears. The plug must nave been reason- ably effective because "Middle of The Night" is still running at the BETTY WALKER above,' once _plaved Mrs. Kramer in the "Goldbergs." Now writing and acting her own material, she will probably do a telephone mono- logue on the Steve Allen Sunday night show. COMING EVENTS Lowerre Post, Veterans of. For- eign Wars, will hold a Spring dance Saturday night at Memorial Hall, 363 Mclean Avenue, with Edward Sikorski and-Greighton House as chairmen. The Scout and Troop Auxiliary of Troop 45 will hold a penny so- cial Sunday at 3 P.M. in the Holy Trinity Church Aduitorium. Pro- ceeds will go toward the pack, troop and explorer unit. The Yonkers Recreation Com- mission will meet Monday night at its office, 283 Nepperhan Avenue. More effective, however, was the impression Betty made'on Allen and his audience. She was signed to do « speciality bit on Alien's Sunday njght show soon after and, on April 21 does another turn on NBC's "Let's Get Sullivan" endeavor. .' Betty, who writes her own ma- teria,!, does two types of sketches primarily. One, a husband and wife routine, has gone over big on day- time TV, particularly on the Garry Moore show. The second, a woman talking to her friend on the tele- phone monologue, has been her nighttime specialty and that's prob- ably what she'll be doing on the Allen show. Planners Get Greenburgh Zone Request GREENBURGH — -The Town Council yesterday referred to the Planning Board a petition for change of zoning on a 300-foot piece of property on the east side of Central Park Avenue near Dro- more Road, Greenville. Carney Will Shed Nortonisms V-^K

ART CARNEY of Yonkers will play Lord Fancourt Babberly in Playhouse 90s version of "Charley's Ayrtt" tonight on channel 2.

By STEVEN H. SCHEUER . "There aren't going to be any

Norton mannerisms in this role— unless I forget," said Art darney, of Yonkers, who's playing Lord Fancourt Babberly in Playhouse 90s version of "Charley's Aunt," tonight.

He really breaks me up."

Carney* had a little trouble initially before, he was cleared for the role. Playhouse 90 wanted him and Art wanted the pact. The show was originally scheduled for later in the season but moved up so Art would have time to do it during Jackie Gleason's three-week vacation. The

trouble was with the sjxmsors. The. Gleason show has one cigaret sponsor and Playhouse 90 has another. h looked for a while as though Art couldn't commit that sin of appearing on a show sponsored by a competing cigaret company. But it was ironed out.

Norton Like Father "That's the first thing my agent

asks when I'm offered a role— who's your sponsor? I've lost a number of parts because of this," said Carney.

Asked where he picked up some of the mannerisms Norton uses, like the lengthy -flourishes of the hands be/ore Norton signs his signature or does some writing, Art said: "It came to me in rehearsal. Suddenly I remembered my father doing that." Art shot his cuffs, wiggled his hands and went

through his delightful routine. " I call it the warmup. My father made it very impressive.'-

Art doesn't say rnuch about his future plans next year. "My contract's up with Gleason in July," he said, "and Jackie doesn't want to do a weekly show next year. But whatever he does I hope I can do something with him if I 'm not signed up by another network."

Writes Own Material Quite a few months ago, when

NBC's "Tonight" show was an entertaining bit of nighttime television under the guidance of Steve Allen. Betty Walker made a guest appearance to plug the Broadway show "Middle Of The Night" in which she appears.

The plug must nave been reasonably effective because "Middle of The Night" is still running at the

BETTY WALKER above,' once _plaved Mrs. Kramer in the "Goldbergs." Now writing and acting her own material, she will probably do a telephone monologue on the Steve Allen Sunday night show.

COMING EVENTS Lowerre Post, Veterans of. For

eign Wars, will hold a Spring dance Saturday night at Memorial Hall, 363 Mclean Avenue, with Edward Sikorski and-Greighton House as chairmen.

The Scout and Troop Auxiliary of Troop 45 will hold a penny social Sunday at 3 P.M. in the Holy Trinity Church Aduitorium. Proceeds will go toward the pack, troop and explorer unit.

The Yonkers Recreation Commission will meet Monday night at its office, 283 Nepperhan Avenue.

Council Asks Check On Zone Violations

The Common Council on resolution of Eighth Ward Councilman William J . Tully has asked-the City Manager to check with the Building Superintendent on "zone violations on Landscape and Wel-lesley Avenues."

Councilman Tully's .resolution complained that the violations are due to the fact that "this particular portion is zoned in an S-50 District (one-family), and is being utilized by some residents on these streets for two-family dwellings." *

He stated the action is being ^ugh t at the request of the Bruce Hill Association.

Tonight's Pick Of The TV Best (Today's top shows as previewed by TV Key's staff of experts at

screenings and rehearsals in New York and Hollywood.) 8:30-9:30 (2) Climax. "Strange Sanctuary." This yarn features a

rather likeable pair of western crooks, one a philosophical Irishman, the other a 'warm hearted Mexican. After being spotted by some nasty law-abiding citizens, they hide out in a convent bV New Mexico. OK horse opera, with Michael Rennle and Cesar Romero as the gentle bandits.

8:30-9:00 (i) Dragnet. An interesting accident case with several choice hit-and-run suspects. Jody Baker and Paul Knight take the acting honors in a tidy, well performed crime show. *

9:00-9:30 (7) Danny Thomas Show. "Little League Umpire." Thanks to some acid comments by Jesse White, this a cute episode. Z^ann>" doesn't ljke some of the calls by umpjTaOT,ittleILeagu& game, so he volunteers to ump a game himself.

9:30-11:00 (2) Playhouse 90. "Charley's Aunt," with Art Carney, Orson Bean, Jeanette McDonald and Richard Haydn. An excellent cast makes the most of what humor is left in this vener-ahle farce, with some new material added spoofing the British love of sport. Art Carney, in the title role, is pretty funny as a female impersonator. You'll also like Richard Haydn as' the elderly Mr. Spettigue and Jackie Coogan as an athletic coach.

9:3010:00 (4)4 Tennessee Ernie Show. Guest Jo Stafford runs through a medley with Ernie, then sells "Temptation." Ernie goes back to his disc jockey days In Tennessee to show how he would have interviewed Jo. Ernie's also due to sing "Company's Coming."

10:0011:00 (4) "Black Angel." A drunken piano playerjand the wife ——ALan_Accused_murderer..make an interesting—detective team.

Well paced thriller, with some nice, foggy scenes in a run-down tavern and the sleazy hotel next door; John Ireland is the dissipated musician with Anne Bancroft co-starred. Above average for mystery fans. (Color)

11:00-12:00 (5) Night Beat. Mike will ask Tennessee Williams, one of America's best writers, whether he inhabits the same dark, tormented world he writes about. Williams, a Southerner, will also discuss Integration. Second guest Is jazz musician Stan Gets who will talk about drug addiction in his field and how he licked the habit.

ANTA Playhouse. More effective, however, was the impression Betty made 'on Allen and his audience. She was signed to do « speciality bit on Alien's Sunday njght show soon after and, on April 21 does another turn on NBC's "Let's Get Sullivan" endeavor. .'

Betty, who writes her own materia,!, does two types of sketches primarily. One, a husband and wife routine, has gone over big on daytime TV, particularly on the Garry Moore show. The second, a woman talking to her friend on the telephone monologue, has been her nighttime specialty and that's probably what she'll be doing on the Allen show.

Planners Get Greenburgh Zone Request

GREENBURGH — -The Town Council yesterday referred to the Planning Board a petition for change of zoning on a 300-foot piece of property on the east side of Central Park Avenue near Dro-more Road, Greenville.

The petition, submitted by Robin Duke Inc., requested that the property be changed from O-l zone to A-10 for the purpose of constructing an apartment house development.

The Council made'public a petition by home owners on Hemlock Drive, Hartsdale, which requested that the nearby Burke-wood Road be closed to through traffic. The street is in the vicinity of the Ardsley junior senior high school now under construction. V ,

Thomas J. Coyle, acting supervisor, informed the Rev. Herman Bennerp spokesman for the petitioners/ that the Council could not act on the matter unless the petition was first referred to the Planning Board.

Payment of $1,500 was authorized yesterday to-the—Village of Elmsford for the Town's use of the Elmsford Village Hall. Since August the Town has been using space in the Village H a l l as quarters for the Town Assessors office.

Also approved was $135 to provide for a "walk' ' phase on a traffic light at Old Army Road and Edgemont Road.

A public hearing was set for April 16 on the petition to establish a Glenville Refuse and Garbage District.
