  • The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland

The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland (CSSM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational corporation promoting and celebrating the culture of the seven Celtic nations: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Galicia/Asturias, The Isle of Man, and Cornwall. For over 30 years, the Celtic Society has successfully produced the Southern Maryland Celtic Festival and Highland Gathering at Jefferson-Patterson Park in Prince Frederick, MD. In addition to this concert and the festival, the Society continually offers many venues for its members and guests to enjoy and learn about other aspects of the Celtic culture, such as annual Celtic dinners, Medieval Feast, traditional music workshops and several members-only events. Please visit our website for more details about these events and membership opportunities at: www.cssm.org

    SOFIA

The SOFIA club of St. Marys Ryken high school was created in 2008 by a student named Amelia Youhn who wished to see more done to help the arts. She aptly named the club the Student Organization For Improving the Arts and since then SOFIA has held annual concerts in partnership with the Celtic Society of Southern Maryland. It is only through the continued support of our community that this is possible, and we are eternally grateful for our donors and volunteers. It is with great honor that we present Carlos Nuez in concert and on behalf of the SOFIA and St. Marys Ryken I would like to welcome you to our school.

TAP DANCER: Justin Myles is a native of Mechanicsville, MD, and spent his childhood surrounded by music, dance and most importantly rhythm. Tapping since the age of 3, taught by his mom & dance instructor Gracie, at Gracie's Guys & Gals dance studio, he graduated from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA, with a BA degree in Dance, majoring in Ballet and Jazz. His performances include five years of touring with the International percussion sensation STOMP traveling the US, Canada and Brazil. A former member of the sensational southern Maryland cover band "The Piranhas", Justin now continues to write and produce his own music - much of which is available on iTunes and what some describe as Acoustical Rock with an R&B Funk style. HIGHLAND DANCERS: Lillian Morrison, Nathaniel Morrison, Bridget Knott and Kayleigh Davis, The Thistle Dancers are students of Susan W. Born in 1971 and raised in the Galician port of Vigo, where he initially picked up the gaita at age eight, Carlos both embodies and reflects the irrepressible spirit of his native music. But he also understands the pitfalls of traditional music becoming incrementally complacent in approach and insulated from innovation. Under those conditions, even the heartiest music can eventually slip into predictability. Carlos respects and seeks to safeguard Galicias musical legacy while also skillfully exploring fresh, fascinating realms of possibility for it. All of that can be heard to great effect on his new CD, Inter-Celtic, released by Sony Music on February 18.

On Inter-Celtic, his latest CD, Carloss range is again exemplary and exhilarating, abetted by his own core band and another star-studded roster of special guests. The album gleams from the first track Mambo (uptempo, free-spirited dance tune composed by Carlos with bandmate Pancho Alvarez) to the last track Reel Roots (medley of dance tunes played in an intoxicating combination of jazz, rock, Irish, and Galician settings).
