Summary

Approximately two hundred years ago, a volcano caused problems with death and destruction around the world. In June of 1816, weather disasters in New England and around the world were destroying farms and crops with snowstorms, droughts, and floods. People didn’t understand what caused the wild weather. Today, scientist discovered the mystery of the wild weather. The cause of all this wild weather was a volcano that erupted in 1815 on Mount Tambora.

Vocabulary Astonished-greatly surprised or impressed; amazed; “Very likely John

Pyroclastic surge- is a fluidized mass of turbulent gas and rock fragments which is ejected during some volcanic eruptions; “This pyroclastic surge devastated everything in its path.”

Dormant- temporarily inactive; “Like many volcanoes, Tamboralooked like an ordinary mountain and had been dormant-quiet-for centuries.”

Plumes- a mixture of particles and gas emitted by an eruption; “The first eruption shook the island and sent up great plumes of fire and ash.”

Dissipate- disperse or scatter; “Most volcanic clouds quickly dissipate- break apart and fade away.”

Stratosphere- The layer of the earth’s atmosphere above the troposphere, extending to about 32 miles above the earth’s surface; “But in a very powerful eruption, the cloud rises so high that it mixes with water and other gases in the stratosphere.”

Summary Mount Tambora’s volcanic eruption had effect’s all

around the world. The powerful eruption caused problems from China all the way to the Arctic because of its volcanic cloud that lingered in the stratosphere causing wild weather. The eruption caused melting of the sea ice in the Arctic Region. It caused problems to the New England farmers and forced migration toward the Ohio Valley. Tambora’s volcanic cloud was also responsible for a monsoon in India that caused a cholera outbreak and killed many. It caused famine in Europe and China from destroyed crops from droughts, flooding's, and massive rains.
