What is a UAV?

▪ Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle

• No on-board pilot

– Controlled remotely or autonomously

• Can be very large or very small

• May be less expensive than a piloted aircraft

• Dull, dirty, dangerous jobs

▪ Carleton’s UAVs

• Corvus

• GeoSurv II

• Avionics test beds (ATBs)

Team Organization –

Flexible Structure

▪ Functional groups

• Design Integration

• Aerodynamics

• Structures

• Avionics and Flight Testing

▪ Cross-functional groups as needed (examples)

• Corvus design team

• Propulsion system integration

• Aircraft assembly

• Etc.

Anticipated Goals for 2014/15

(subject to change)

▪ GeoSurv II

• Complete ground testing and integration of new systems (e.g. engine with

integrated starter)

• Taxi and ground testing of current prototype and engine system

• Flight mechanics modelling

▪ Corvus

• “Fly early/fly often” – airborne laboratory to be completed in September/October 2014

▪ Avionics Test Beds (ATBs)

• Integrate and test imaging systems

• Open source autopilot integration and test flights; hardware-in-the-loop

▪ Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL)

• Complete design, manufacture and testing

▪ New UAV design study?
