Christmas MemoriesChristmas is one of the favorite times of year for St. Luke’s residents. This holiday brings back many great memories for the residents. Park Avenue Villa, A Place That You Can Call Home

Mitch and Charlotte recently visited Park Avenue Villa and shared their story of being missionaries. Mitch and Charlotte have served as missionaries in several countries over the years but for the last 6 years they have spent their time teaching the word of God to orphaned children, their extended families and community. Mitch and Charlotte were also responsible for setting up Care Point centers in Swaziland and South Africa. Mitch and Charlotte shared what day to day life is like for the children and the hardships that both children and adults endure in Swaziland. Mitch and Charlotte have become important parental figures to the children they work with and boast about being “parents” to over 11,000 children.

While in Africa, Mitch survived a near death experience that was caused from a medical mishap. After 5 months in an African hospital, Mitch was stable enough to return to the US where he endured a few more extensive surgeries. Once Mitch rehabilitated, he and Charlotte returned to South Africa and with the partnership of a couple other missionaries they purchased a macadamia nut farm which serves the purpose of creating a profit which helps feed the children and also benefit the community.

Mitch and Charlotte have since returned home and have spent precious time with family. But it did not take long before this Mitch and Charlotte were called to Piedmont SD where Mitch will serve as another pastor in the Hills View Church. Where one of the many roles for Mitch and Charlotte will be to focus on the outreach program to the community and Mitch is the brother to PAV beautician, Brenda Messer.

PAV tenants recently were able to listen to the story of Mitch and Charlotte

Hildebrant as they spoke during Devotion.

Christmas Open HouseThe aroma of apple cider and the sound of Christmas carols filled the halls during our Christmas Open House which was held, December 4. The annual event was held to welcome family and friends, and to raise funds to purchase a handicap-accessible van for St. Luke’s Home.To help with this endeavor, a variety of themed baskets, donated by local businesses, St. Luke’s Staff and Board of Directors, were raffled. A bake sale table was filled with home-made candies, sweets and breads, and the residents made home-made Santa Claus, elf, owl and snowman ornaments for the ornament sale. All contributed to a very successful event.St. Luke’s would like to thank our retired staff who returned to volunteer for the event along with board members and friends of St. Luke’s. Thank you also to the community for their generosity and support.

Greetings from St. Luke’s Administrator

Edwin Hecker’s old time music set the tone for the New Year’s party at St. Luke’s Home, December 30. The residents rang in the New Year dancing and singing to Edwin’s music. Pauline Pavlicek, Volunteer and St. Luke’s Activity Staff, danced many songs with the residents; the polka being one of the favorites. The residents enjoyed a glass of champagne as they blew their party horns to welcome 2017.

Greetings from St. Luke’s Home and Park Avenue Villa to you! As this winter continues to challenge us, there are many different things happening around our building.

The beginning of January we welcomed the Department of Health for our annual survey. This assessment went very well. Our entire team learned a few things from their team and will continue our goal of providing the best care to our residents and families.

We are challenged with the state budget cuts, and anticipate difficulties in the coming years for nursing homes. Our goal is to take the best care of our residents, those who built and formed our state to what it is today. Without adequate funding, this will be much more challenging, if not impossible. Our state senators and representatives have a challenge this session and we pray that there is some funding allocated for our elderly.

We are in the process of working to build our Foundation to fund the projects and items that will not be possible in the coming years. On that list is a new handicap accessible van for our residents, improved lighting in the chapel, Park Avenue Villa updates and remodel of our Dietary Services area. The improvements will enhance the quality of life for our residents and tenants. If you would like to make a donation or a pledge, please call St. Luke’s and we can discuss the possibilities.

Thank you for your support of St. Luke’s and stay safe this winter!

Christmas PhotosOn October 1, many smiles were captured as Linda Heidt took Christmas photos of the residents along with their family members. Linda has a natural talent for photography, and has taken Christmas photos of the residents for over ten years. Staff here are so very grateful to Linda for this special gift she gives to the residents and their families.Christmas photo day, is a special day each year, bringing residents and their families together to create memories and have a special photo taken for the holiday. Linda touches up the photos and provides St. Luke’s discs with the photos for the residents or families to print copies. Many residents choose to have Christmas cards made or prints for their families for Christmas. A lot of preparation goes into this special day; St. Luke’s volunteers, Activity Staff and Mary Ann Anton, the beautician at St. Luke’s have the ladies looking their best by setting their hair for the photos. The ladies have their make-up touched up right before the photos by Mary Ann and their family members as well as special outfits for the photos are picked out in advance.
