SOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORSSOCIAL AND GENDER INDICATORS

The process of compiling statistics and indicators

in the CARICOM Programme is to obtain sex-

disaggregated information for policy formulation,

decision-making and monitoring and assessing of

social development.

Relative to the collection of sex-disaggregated data

(wherever possible), the idea is to facilitate the

mainstreaming of gender in policy development

CARICOM


International Context:

At the international level, the commitments

emanating from a series of international

conferences stimulated the production of statistics

and indicators similar to these which are to be

compiled.

In the analysis of the situation of women for the

Fourth World Conference in 1995, National

Governments agreed to the following twelve (12)

areas of concern:

Includes the establishment of a core data set in all areas of statistics

These current efforts in collecting social gender statistics will form part of the core data set in social gender statistics

COMPONENT OF THE CARICOM PROGRAMME:

Was first proposed at the Second Meeting of the

CARICOM Advisory Group in Social Gender and

Environment Statistics in Dominica (2001) and was

refined at the Third Meeting in Grenada (2002)



• Consideration was also given to the Milliennium

Develpoment Goals (MDGs) for incorporation into the

data set and some of these indicators are included

where feasible.

RATIONALE FOR INCLUSION OF INDICATORS AND STATISTICS WAS BASED ON:

Relevance at the Regional and National levels

Frequency requested by users (policy-making, managers, planners and researchers)

The list of statistics has been divided into two groups.

The first set (Group 1) - those which it is considered

must be collected.

Group 2 - while these are important they are thought to

be more supporting information of the Group 1

indicators (based on time and effort they constitute

Group 2)


As the Programme develops it would be possible to

incorporate them fully as part of Group 1 (Key

Indicators)

The SIMDG Committee:

Has a critical role to play in the compilation of these

statistics and indicators and

To engage in follow-up activities relating to the preparation

of a National Level Report (with analysis) as a major

output.

The approach of establishing the SIMDG Committee and giving

the Committee the responsibilty for compiling these statistics and

indicators, will result in improvements in:

Quality Improvement
