invitado a pasar a leer, estudiar, investigar y… escribir.
Disfrútalo.
CARIBBEAN DREAM
Sebastián Bellón López
He couldn’t remember clearly who was in the car. He
believed they were some of his new colleagues and that it was he
who was driving. They were immersed in a dark and frightening
atmosphere although it was heat the most worrying thing. Air was
like melted lead and impossible to breathe it was necessary to
swallow it. Then all of a sudden a big explosion came. It was an
atomic bomb, he was sure of that. This is the end, he thought, and
for the first time in his life he was aware of death, coming in that
incredible burning wave that expanded at light speed. The last
thing he felt was how his brain melted into the skull.
A few days before when he overflew the snowy peaks of the
Andes Range he was excited thinking about people he has just
known in the plane and people he was about to know when the
plane landed. It was not his first time in a Caribbean country so he
was aware of the unhealthiness of the climate, hot and humid, but
in this occasion the heat was so intense when he got out of the
plane that he thought he was standing by the still working engines.
The reception was a mixed one. People who came to
receive him and his colleagues were very friendly and were as
excited as them. They came in a chiva, a convertible bus painted
in gay colours with a bunch of musicians at the back to cheer the
journey up as they were to be driven to their respective homes.
But after waiting for the luggage to come out he was displeased to
see his wouldn’t appear and as it was the last flight of the day the
only thing to do was to part and try to find it next day.
Tired and hungry after eleven hours crossing the ocean,
sweating like a pig, he tried to enjoy the journey to his new home
but the only things he had in his mind were the loss of his wallet
and a pair of incredible legs close to him that belonged to his
“sister”, the girl who was going to be his host for the following two
months. Live music from the rear of the bus mixed with humidity
and heat, with new odors and scents which origin was difficult to
determine. The bus made a first stop in a liquor shop to get some
bottles of rum to make the journey more enjoyable and, with the
music always playing, went on stopping to let people at home.
When he and his host reached his new home it was around
midnight and he was told not to turn the lights on because
everybody was sleeping at that time. So he entered his room and
seeing almost nothing he laid himself on the bed without seeing
the key to the fan on the ceiling. The heat was so intense that the
only thing he thought could help to refresh him was to open the
window. It made no difference but at least he had the feeling that
the air was moving. That night was a true nightmare not only
because of the heat but also because of all the thoughts that went
through his mind about the luggage and what he would do in the
case he couldn’t recover it.
Early in the morning he got up and went to know his new
host family who were having breakfast at the dining room.
Everything was new for him, the people, the accent, the food, the
scents, even the light was different. After making the
presentationsthey brought up the question about his luggage and
told him not to worry if it didn’t appear because he could get
anything he needed from them. Later this same morning he
received a call from the airport telling him that his luggage had
mistakenly been sent to ... Tokyo! but that it will come back to
Colombia in a pair of days. So he got ready to go to know the city
and to pay a visit to the university where he will be teaching for the
next two months.
When he told his family he planned to go by walking they
opened their eyes in amazement and thought he had gone mad.
Nobody there went walking the five kilometers distance to
downtown and not only because of this huge length but also
because of the severity of the sun. So although he accepted to get
there by taxi, after having an interview with his tutor at the
university, he spent some hours walking without having the
precaution to protect his head from the painful sunrays.
Some days later he began to feel sick, as if he were losing
energy, not wishing to do anything but to lie on bed watching TV
under the smooth rumour of the fan. This weakness increased as
days passed by but he couldn’t understand what was happening to
him. Nor did his family, because nobody would guess it was simply
the humid and hot climate of a tropical city surrounded by sea
water.
A day came when he had difficulty in standing up to go from
his bed to the toilet. He had to do such a great effort that he
understood that something serious was happening to him. After
thinking for a while he got to the conclusion that he had lost a lot of
water and salts so he prepared a jar of salt dilution and drank
about two liters of it. When, after a while, he began to piss and
saw the crystalline and transparent aspect of the urine he decided
to taste it to see if his theory was correct. In fact, it had no flavour
at all so he realized he was suffering from a dehydration
syndrome. He felt so weak that he started to think that death was
not far away so he woke up his family and told them they must
take him to the hospital before he fainted.
He opened his eyes and saw the fan spinning quietly
above his head, there was no trace of the car nor of any explosion
and a kindly light flooded the familiar room. He tried to remember
what had happened the day before when the nice pair of legs he
knew so well entered the room bringing a fresh and repairing
breakfast.
The end.
No notó mucha
