    Preface

    TheideaofCarFreeDevelopmentisgainingincreasingattentionaroundtheglobe.

    Designingstreetsforpeople,notjustcars,isconsideredtobeakeyissueinefforts

    aimedatreducingcardependencyandpromotinglowcarbonmobility.Moreover,

    recentconceptssummarisedunderthetermNewStreetDesignhelptoreconcilecartrafficmovementwiththeneedsofpedestriansandthedesireforattractivepublic

    spaces.Theseconceptssignificantlyimproveconditionsfornonmotorisedtransport

    wherecompletelyblockingaccessforvehiclesisimpossibleorundesirable.

    Inmanydeveloping and newly industrialised countriesthe levelof car ownership

    stillremainslowcomparedtoWesternEuropeanorUSstandards.Theseconditions

    provide a unique opportunity to foster nonmotorised transport, to improve

    accessibilityandtomaintaineconomicviability.Avoidingtheerroneoustrendofcar

    orientedcitydevelopmentpursuedformanyyearsinWesterncountrieswillbenefit

    the vast majority of city dwellers in developing countries. In addition, it will

    contributesignificantlytomeetclimaterelatedCO2mitigationtargets.Thisdocumentaimsatprovidingthereaderwithanoverviewofthelatestavailable

    literatureonCar FreeDevelopmentandNewStreetDesign.Moreover,it includes

    linkstoawiderangeofrelatedorganisationsandprojects.Wehopetheinformation
