TERM 2 WEEK 4 2019
Fantastic Success for Aaron! Well done to Aaron who has just set the U16, U18 and U20
Athletics Australia record for T20 in the 3000m. Aaron
competed in March at the National Championships in
Sydney and is the new Australian record holder! We are
very proud of Aaron and his amazing speed.
Athletics Carnival Another great athletics carnival last week with fabulous weather, fantastic students and
great helpers from MacKillop College. Everyone had a great day, ran fast, jumped far
and showed us their best sporting behaviour. Thank you to families and friends for
joining us and of course Mr Ryan for his excellent organisation. Well done to Jess W
and Lachlan F for Overall Senior Champions, Aaron H and Caitlin M for Overall
Intermediate Champions and Tyra Z and Allan E For Overall Junior Champions.
STEMShare Kits We received three STEMShare Kits this term. STEMShare kits are provided by the
Department of Education to assist us with teaching STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering & Mathematics). All three of our kits are robotics which the students can
program and then see them move as well as do other amazing things. Class D have
been using the Lego WeDo kit to build cars and even a rubbish truck! And of course to
make them move using the iPads that come as part of the kit.
Yr 12 Jumpers We would like to thank the Carenne P&C who
have once again purchased Yr 12 jumpers for our
senior students. Don’t they all look great!
We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional
custodians of our lands, Australia. We acknowledge the Wiradjuri nation as the
traditional custodians of these lands we now call Bathurst, and we pay our respects to
their Elders both past and present.

Work Experience
Every Wednesday our students in years 9, 10, 11 and 12 participate in a work experience program.
Some of our students go out into the community and work in an environment that prepares them
for the work force, while others participate in school based experiences that prepare them to be
work ready. Within the school the students are engaged in a range of activities and develop new
skills according to which group they join for work experience. Our canteen crew have today learnt
how to make a ‘rue’ to go in their macaroni and cheese for todays lunch. The outdoor crew are
busy tidying up our school grounds and making our playground an inviting area for all students.
The school jobs crew deliver essential items to classes and offices around the school. We have a
very capable group of young people who are becoming very skilled at following instructions to
complete a task. Our final group are a very talented young people who are working with
technology.
Technology Mandatory
Also on Wednesdays our year 7 and 8 students are engaged in the subject of Technology Mandatory
where they are presented with the opportunity to become technologically literate. This class is cur-
rently learning about peripheral devices. Take care Nadine

The students of Class F had an amazing day at the athletics carnival. Everyone tried very hard throwing the
discus, javelin and shotput. We had some super fast runners in the 100m and big jumpers in the long jump. It
was wonderful to see everyone having a go and enjoying the beautiful weather. We are continuing with our
Maths and English groups in the middle session. This week we have been focusing on subtraction and looking
for subtraction patterns. This week in English we have started our new book called ’The Bunyip of Berkeley’s
Creek’. We have enjoyed drawing the mythical creature, looking at his toes and face, shape and body.
Everyone loved going to our new art room where they had fun drawing a unicorn with Ms Moore and Miss
Linda. In Geography we have been investigating what it would be like to live in other countries such as the
Philippines, Japan and Papua New Guinea. We have been looking at how to protect our world by discussing
how we can help recycle, reuse and reduce. We are continuing to develop our cooking skills by making simple

F.R.I.E.N.D.S For Life
Class D have been working through F.R.I.E.N.D.S For Life which develops strategies to cope with
day-to-day life experiences that may cause anxiety and stress. The program builds resilience, self
esteem and a positive mindset while giving skills to maintain healthy relationships with others.
Mindfulness Meditation
Class D practise mindfulness every afternoon which helps them to slow down and unjumble their
thoughts after an exciting play time and busy day of work. As well as empowering students with
self regulation strategies it helps students to focus on the ‘here and now’. They are currently
working through their second program on Headspace after finishing Smiling Mind last term.
Short and Curly
Short and Curly is a fast-paced fun-filled ethics podcast with questions and ideas to really get the
class thinking in the morning. It asks questions about animals, technology, school, pop culture
and the future. We’ve had some interesting discussions that consider different points of view.
Sport
Class D have enjoyed participating in weekly sport as well as bike riding every Friday afternoon,
building gross motor skills while having loads of fun with their friends. They have participated in
the Athletics and Swimming Carnivals, and the Relay for Life, being wonderful ambassadors of
our school. We love living healthy lifestyles!

Arlene Monaghan (Teacher)
Wendy Lynch (SLSO)
This term, Class M have continued working on Australia’s connection to Asia by comparing different
ways people live and share the world. We are researching different ways individuals use artworks to
tell stories and share cultural ideas about topics such as traditional gardens, family, housing, sport
and music. Students are creating Visual Art Portfolios to display their creativity.
We have all been taking turns looking after our class kitchen. Students are developing independent
living skills such as cooking delicious lunches (and the occasional sweet treat), boiling the kettle to
make a cup of tea, washing and drying dishes and using our washing machine/clothes dryer to do our
laundry.
Class M pride themselves when working with Class S to share our kitchen space and value the
opportunity of working as respectful, safe learners.

Mick Phillips (SLSO)
We have enjoyed a nice start to Term 2. We have been learning about World War I in the library
and in class. We attended the Carenne School ANZAC Ceremony, where Callan and Kade both
read beautifully. We also cooked ANZAC biscuits and visited the Carillion in town to learn about
its significance.
We all had fun and enjoyed the athletics carnival and congratulations on Caitlin and Aaron who
earned age champions.
We continue to be busy in the classroom, in PDHPE the guys have enjoyed learning about
friendships and relationships. They have spent some time role playing effective conversations,
where they were given a topic and had to focus on: smiling, eye contact, personal space, listening
and asking follow up questions.

CLASS N
Suzanne Ryan (Teacher)
Samantha Schofield (SLSO)
Class N have had a great start to the term with lots of new study units to get their teeth into. In
Science we are learning about the Living World, the different types of creatures that share the
planet and how they interact with each other and the environment. We have learnt that Humans
are animals, too. Mammals, in fact. We all found that fact a little too amazing to believe.
In Geography and History we have investigated where we came from and where we are going,
building this fabulous nation of ours through sacrifice, diligence, through to modern
communication, trade and transport.
Perhaps the favourite subject this term is Technology Mandatory where we are learning about
textiles and design. We are making two-handled library bags, sewing them ourselves and
tie dying. We are all very much looking forward to the dying part and have already chosen our
colours.
Class N enjoyed learning about the tradition of ANZAC Day and participating in the school service.
Bridget Day read a short poem with great heart.
We had a great day at the school athletics carnival. The weather was perfect and we all did our
best. Students who attended The Addams Family at the BMEC enjoyed it very much and are to be
commended on their behaviour.
On a personal note, I have been so pleased by the students’ cooperation and friendliness, having
me as their new teacher this term while Mr Neal is away.

Class O continues to work hard in all KLAs. In Food technology, students have been studying
about food values. Cooking lessons, based on healthy eating habits, continues to be student’s
focus. They are trying new foods and enjoying the process of cooking them. In Science, students
are learning about land and sea animals and their habitat. Different animals construct their own
habitat. And that was fun to see. This week in Maths students are learning about currencies. They
researched and found out that over 35 countries use a Dollar as their currency while 8 countries
use Peso. In sport, students enjoyed athletics carnival and we congratulate Jessica for winning
the senior girls trophy again. It is great to see how Class O students love to read and interact with
books. Our weekly visit to the public library is always a time well utilised.

Paula Hundy / Melinda Gavin (SLSO)
We have had a very busy term so far with lots to learn about ANZAC during our last week of Term
1 and Week 1 of this term. Mr and Mrs Sutton came in to show us some of their World War
memorabilia and then we visited the RSL Club who had a fantastic display in their foyer.
The students had many questions regarding the wars and we continued to learn about Simpson
and his donkey as well as why we commemorate our soldiers each year during ANZAC week
ceremonies.
The Athletics Carnival was a great success with our class participating well in the majority of
activities on the day. The weather was perfect and the behaviour of our Senior boys was
exemplary. Congratulations to all involved and a big thank you to Mr Ryan for his organisation on
the day.
We continue to work hard at our various work experience placements and look forward to
hearing great things from the employers who assist our students in learning new tasks and in
giving practical experiences that we can’t always offer at school, in a Particular Industry. We
really appreciate the wider community for giving us these wonderful opportunities.
We sadly farewelled young Ethan from our school as well and he will be missed by his friends
and staff who have worked with him over the years. We wish Ethan and his family all the best in
their new adventure on the coast, and hope to catch up with them when they come back to visit
family back in Bathurst.

A major emphasis for the first part of Term 2 has been the students exploring the importance of
learning to be safe online including looking after their online friends. The students have examined
videos and information from the Australian E-Safety Commission. This site explores the
importance of safety and wellbeing. There was an excellent section that allowed the students to
explore an aboriginal perspective of the importance of online safety. The students have enjoyed
discussing and identifying what the characters in the various videos and animation could or
should have done to protect themselves and others online.
We have also explored a range of technologies including programs for the 3D printer. We would
also like to thank Mat Rattray who has helped to update the technology system in the classroom.

MTC students have been very busy this term trying to achieve some of the goals they set for
themselves at the start of the year.
Class Moss have been busy little bees hard at work setting up the vegetable gardens and greenhouse
area. Thomas and Domanick have been exceptional helpers and have learnt how to correctly take a
cutting and propagate plants. Samuel has taken pride in caring for our succulent cuttings and has
been eager to discuss the changes that are occurring. Grant has diligently weeded, watered and
cared for all of the new plants. Class Moss spent some time turning the vegetable gardens and
discussing ways to improve the soil. Vegetable charts have been looked at to see what we should be
preparing to sow next. We hope to have a large range of plants and vegetables by spring.
Class Moss have had the pleasure of visiting with Ms Gavin, where we were able to help feed the
chickens, fill the pig water and feed and pat the horses, goats and sheep. Most importantly we were
able to check in our beloved Kevin and ensure that he was enjoying himself out in the sunshine with
his friends. Class Moss asked many interesting questions about caring for the animals and are eager
to return and learn more about all of the animals.
Class Moss has had an exciting addition to the class and are now the proud carers for Psycho and
Bubbles, our two gold fish. Since having our fish all students have taken turns in feeding them and
cleaning the tank.
Class Moss has indicated a strong passion for learning about and caring for animals, due to this we
visited the Duck Pond, in Bathurst to view the ducks and how they interact with one another. We also
read and discussed the new signs that have been put up with information about what a ducks diet
should consist of. This was a lovely outing for the class.
MTC has been focusing on improved sportsmanship. This has been seen during whole school sport
activities and PDHPE lessons. Week 4 saw students engage in League Tag, where they demonstrated
improved focus, participation and improved student relationships.

CARENNE NEWS - Carenne Art Program
Our school’s new Art Program commenced in Term 2 and has been very enthusiastically received by the students. The school’s original gym (one of the oldest parts or our school) has been transformed into an art room, thanks to a lot of hard work from staff and students.
The art room operates every Tuesday with four classes visiting during the day. This term, we’ve based our activities around the topic Mythical Creatures and explored a range of art processes and materials. The results are fantastic! The students have had great fun while learning new skills and exploring the sensory nature of a variety of art materials.
A number of students also visited the Art Express Exhibition at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. This was a new experience for some of our students and was enjoyed by all.
