WELLINGTONIAN Jamie Houston getshis fair share of strange looks whenhe tells people he’s ‘‘the back-endguy’’.
‘‘I met this lady the other day whoasked what I did, I said ‘I look afteryour back end’. Of course her mouthdropped and she looked at me andsaid ‘well you don’t look after mine’,’’he laughs.
‘‘I do it on purpose – they might notremember my name but theyremember that I’m the back-end guy.It’s about getting people interested inwhat I do.’’
Houston is no health professional,as many might suspect after such anopening gambit but he is a back-endmarketing strategist. It means hespecialises in helping businessesimplement sales and marketingcampaigns that generate morebusiness by tapping into their existingdatabases of customers.
‘‘I specialise in past clientreactivation,’’ he says. ‘‘I talk aboutgetting that old database out of thecupboard and dusted off because theyare the people who have alreadyspent money with you so why notnurture them, engage them and findout who is ready to buy off youagain?’’
He believes too many businesses‘‘flush their profits down the toilet’’ byspending all their marketing budgetson the front end – finding new leadsand converting them into clients.
‘‘As funny as it may sound, when itcomes to your business, looking afteryour back end really is seriousbusiness.’’
He says it’s about having the propercustomer follow-up systems in placeto maximize the lifetime value of eachcustomer so that they buy again, andeven make referrals to friends, familyand social and business connections.
Through his own Lower Hutt-basedcompany, Honk Marketing, Houstonbuilds these ‘‘marketing funnels’’ byusing email and web pages for hisclients after several meetings aboutthe course of action.
Right now he’s building a marketingcampaign for one client, and used athird party email marketing platformthrough which makes an offer andbased on recipients’ actions figuresout who is ready to buy.
‘‘I will be creating and building alanding page, a specific web pagerelated to the campaign, not a genericwebsite. I will make sure all the i’s aredotted and t’s are crossed, I will writethe email copy in conjunction with theclient to make sure it’s in keeping withtheir language but it also has a strongcall to action, and a deadline.’’
He speaks of another client whowas looking for ways to utilise theircompany database but were unsurewhere to begin.
After enlisting Houston’s help, theydusted off their old database and gotit to the point where it could be used,and then sent an email campaignmaking an offer to past and currentclients.
‘‘They generated nearly $300,000in turnover in a couple of weeks as aresult of that specific emailcampaign,’’ he says delightedly.
For Houston, that’s the rewardingpart.
‘‘On one hand I’m trying to take a30,000 foot view of the businessoverhead, and on the other hand I’m adetails guy.
‘‘So combining the two to build outa campaign like that, then seeingpeople work their way through it andmy clients coming back to say they’vegot, say, five new sales they wouldn’thave otherwise got, that is veryrewarding.
‘‘It’s also exciting to see thelightbulb go off in their minds,realising they’ve been missing out onall this business for so many yearsbecause they’ve been ignoring theirpast clients.’’
Houston began his own business in2010 and almost eight years on he’snow juggling it with family life withtwo young boys, aged eight monthsand almost three.
As well as being ‘‘the back-endguy’’, he’s also a musician.
He plays piano, saxophone andukulele as a ‘‘fun strummer’’ andteaches piano to children from hishome one afternoon a week.
‘‘I have six kids come to my houseand learn piano off me – I do that toget my head out of the computer andmarketing and into the creative space,and I love it.’’
Houston wanted to become amusician from a young age. He began
playing the piano at age eight andcontinued with the same teacher for15 years.
‘‘When she retired I was her longeststanding pupil – I played classical butconvinced her to try more pop androck when Elton John wrote Song forGuy and I wanted to learn it.’’
He discovered jazz as a student atWellington College and learnt thesaxophone as a result, as well as jazzpiano.
‘‘On the last day of school I got amessage from the office saying ShandMillers musical instrument store waslooking for someone to work in theirsheet music department.
‘‘I had basically wagged all myclasses and just did music at school,so I was the first person they thoughtof, and off I went.’’
Eventually he did a Bachelor ofMusic at Victoria University, majoringin composition.
Outside of his studies he playedclassical piano at former PlimmerHouse Restaurant, now BoulcottStreet Bistro, and worked in thehospitality industry at Wilton Houseand James Cabaret.
Then a major about-turn followed –he successfully applied for a jobworking for Wellington photographerSimon Woolf firstly in admin and thenas one of his assistants.
After a stint overseas and workingin a bar in Ireland, he slotted back intohis role at Woolf Photography beforemaking a return to the music industry.
‘‘I worked for three differentmusical instrument stores both hereand in [Lismore] Australia over thenext 10-12 years, and at that stage Iwas getting up to management level.
‘‘I was doing all the marketing andadvertising for each shop I wasrunning and looking for better ways to
do things.‘‘Eventually I got to the point where
I was in my 40s, I couldn’t see a bigfuture in staying doing what I wasdoing, so I started looking around forother things, which is when Idiscovered the online world ofmarketing.’’
After finishing a course by original‘‘back-end’’ specialist and Americanentrepreneur Steve Rosenbaum,Houston took the plunge and set uphis own consultancy.
‘‘I realised this was something thatbusinesses really needed and I couldoffer it.
‘‘So I quit my job after 30 years ofhaving a job – it was a huge step andit took me almost two years to get upthe guts to do it.’’
At the time Houston was still livingin Australia in Byron Bay, but hemoved back to Wellington soon afterto build up his business.
‘‘Living in Byron Bay was amazing,the lifestyle was amazing, buteveryone there is a lifestyler so it washard starting a marketing consultancyand finding potential clients.’’
He has since joined variousnetworking groups so that HonkMarketing can gather momentum.
He’s also formed an online ukulelecommunity that has about 16,000followers on Facebook.
‘‘I’ve actually built a little businessout of ukulele merchandise. I did it asa way to show potential and currentclients how you can build a followingon social media and monetise it.’’
He enjoys the fact that workingfrom home allows him to also be afamily man. In fact, after beinginterviewed he was off with his wifeand two boys to Aroha RetirementVillage where he runs a music groupfor toddlers.
‘‘I take my ukulele and we havesome fun for half an hour, it’s a veryspecial time for me. It’s so fulfillingbeing able to share my love of musicwith all the little ones, to see theirfaces light up when their favouritesong comes on and watch them do allthe actions to go with it.
‘‘Being able to run my businessfrom home, and to have the flexibilityto be with my family when it counts,is challenging, exciting and fulfilling,absolutely.’’
