• What is your son/daughter’s future employment/study goal?• What is the best pathway to support this goal being reached?• What subjects have they previously experienced success in?• What subjects are they interested in?• Which prerequisite subjects are required for a particular TAFE or
University course?• This is a 2 year commitment to a course of study. Are they willing

Senior Assessment andTertiary Entrance
Mr Jon BurnettDean of Teaching and Learning
Introduction to SATE
The new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance (SATE) system will commence for Queensland students who enter Year 11 in 2019. This will affect students currently in Grade 10 and younger. The new system includes:
• a new senior assessment model that combines school-based assessment with external assessment
• replacement of the Overall Position (OP) tertiary entrance rank with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
Diligence and Integrity
Why?
• By moving to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), Queensland will align with the other states.
• The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) recommended changes to achieve greater rigour and simplicity.

Current System (OP) New system for Year 11 students from 2019 (ATAR)
Three types of subjects for Year 11 & 12:• Authority subjects
(contributing to an OP)• Authority-registered subjects
(not contributing to an OP)• Certificate Courses (VET)
(not contributing to an OP)
Students typically study six subjects.
Three types of subjects for Year 11 & 12:• General subjects
(contributing to an ATAR)• Applied subjects
(only one may contribute to an ATAR)• Certificate Courses (VET)
(only one may contribute to an ATAR)
Students typically study six subjects.
Current system vs SATE: Results
Diligence and Integrity
Current System (OP) New system for Year 11 students in 2019 (ATAR)
OP calculation:• Uses students’ achievements in five
Authority subjects(best 20 Semester units)
• Scaled against school results in the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test.
ATAR calculation: • Uses student’s best five subject results
(one may be an Applied subject/VETcertificate).
• QTAC will compare subjects state-wide to scale students’ results.
The OP ranks students from 1 to 25 for tertiary entrance
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will replace the OP. An ATAR is a rank between 0.00 and 99.95 in increments of 0.05.

Current system vs SATE: Assessment
Diligence and Integrity
Current System (OP) New system for Year 11 students from 2019 (ATAR)
Students usually complete 5 to 7 school-based assessment items for each subject in Grade 12.
In General subjects, students complete:• three school-based assessments
and • one external assessment
All OP-eligible students sit the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test in Year 12. Group results from the QCS Test are used in the calculation of OPs.
The QCS Test will no longer exist.
Student results are individual.
General subjects in Unit 3 and 4
For most subjects:• 3 x Internal Assessments = 75%• 1 x External Assessment = 25%

For Maths & Sciences:• 3 x Internal Assessments = 50%• 1 x External Assessment = 50%

Reporting
Diligence and Integrity
Students in General Subjects will receive 2 different results:
1. A numerical score out of 100 which contributes towards their ATAR – eg. 15/25 on an exam, or 64/100 overall for a subject. This number is reported to QCAA for ATAR calculation.
2. An A-E score for school reporting purposes. This result is reported to families on report cards.
What’s a QCE?The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) records achievement of a significant amount of learning, at a set standard and pattern in contributing studies, while meeting literacy and numeracyrequirements.
• “significant amount of learning” = 20 credit points. 1 point per unit that is PASSED.
• “set standard” = a C or better (a pass).
• “literacy and numeracy” = pass Maths and English.
Diligence and Integrity
QCE Attainment is the goal for all students to achieve by the end of Year 12.
Diligence and Integrity
Subject changes
The new system dictates that Units 3 & 4 are grouped as a pair to receive points towards a QCE. Units 3 & 4 inform ATAR calculations.
Students will not be allowed to change subjects after Term 3, Year 11.
