Kansas City Missouri Police Departmentkcpd.orgIn front of the Police Headquarters stands astatue of a police officer holding a small child inhis arms. The monument in itself relates a story, but a closer look reveals 119 names engravedin the stone - men who gave their lives inupholding the oath they took at the time theybecame police officers. These men gave everything with the hope thattheir sacrifice would make the city a betterplace to live. If space permitted, each namewould make a story well worth telling.

The Kansas City Missouri Police Departmenthad its beginning April 15, 1874, when theBoard of Police Commissioners, with GeorgeCaleb Bingham (famed Missouri artist) as its

president, appointed Thomas M. Speers to fillthe office from April 15, 1874, to May 4, 1895.No chief since that time has held the office aslong as Chief Speers. Chief Clarence M. Kelley, who in 1973 resigned to become the secondpermanent Director of the Federal Bureau ofInvestigation, was head of the Kansas CityPolice Department almost twelve years and wassecond in the length of time he served the citi-zens of Kansas City. Both of these men were faradvanced in their talents and actions in the fieldof law enforcement, capable of giving the mostto the citizens of Kansas City for the dollarsspent and the manpower available.

Since the appointment of Chief Speers, KansasCity has been served by 34 men as head of thedepartment. A search into history of the back-ground of each of these men soon reveals thateach had an outstanding gift of leadership andresponsibility that suited them for the importantoffice they filled.

The City Council, heavily swayed by a corruptTom Pendergast, approved a home-rule ordi-nance in 1932 that brought KCPD under citygovernance for the first time since its 1874inception. Previously, it was governed by aboard of men appointed by the governor.Corruption of the police force ensued.

In 1939, Missouri Attorney General Roy McKelt-side came down hard on the corruption generat-ed by the Pendergast Machine. Missouri Gover-nor Lloyd Stark had the police departmentreturned to state control under commissionersthat he appointed. Thus was reinstated the origi-nal form of KCPD governance – a governor-appointed Board of Police Commissioners, andit’s the system we use today. (An historical note:this new Board in 1939 appointed a new policechief, Lear B. Reed, and charged him with root-ing corruption out of the force. About 50 percentof KCPD employees were fired at that time.)

Today, the Board of Police Commissioners gov-erns a department with more than 1,400 officersand 600 civilians. These department membersare dedicated to serving all those who live, workand play in Kansas City, MO.

Netchemia, LLC.netchemia.comAWARD WINNING •Winner of Ingram’s Magazine 2011 "BestCompanies to Work For"•TalentEd Recruit & Hire - selected "ReadersChoice Top 100 Product for 2011" by DistrictAdministration Magazine.•TalentEd Recruit & Hire - "2010 SIIA CODiEAward Finalist" in the category of Best K-12Enterprise Solution.

A lot of people talk about improving the educa-tional system in the United States, but atNetchemia we don’t just talk about it. We makeit happen.

What can we say? We were the type of studentsthat sat in the front of the class, raised ourhands with questions (and answers!) andalways brought an apple for our teacher.

Now, we may not be in school anymore, but thelearning hasn’t stopped.

When we started in 2001, we were just a bunchof fresh-faced entrepreneurs excited about theimpact we were going to make in the businessworld. Little did we know that a year later wewould find ourselves in a school auditorium inTopeka, Kansas being applauded by 300 educa-tors. Our first education project, netIEP, allowedschool administrators to bring their specialeducation forms and daily processes onlinewhile staying compliant with IEPs. At thatmoment, we learned that education was wherewe could make a true impact. Gold stars for us!

Not so fast, we were not done yet! After severalyears of working with districts across the countryand learning about the challenges of education,we realized that for too long the focus has most-

ly been on the student-side of learning. Webelieve that schools can dramatically impactstudent achievement if they recruit, hire, develop and retain the best teachers and schoolleaders.

Our nine years as a software company hasgiven us the experience to help school districtsachieve improved educational results. Wecouldn’t have done it without learning a fewinvaluable lessons along the way:

• A lot is lost within stacks of paper - When itcomes to hiring top-notch talent or tracking anemployee’s performance, our educationalinstitutions deserve better than reams of papersand file cabinets stuffed with applications andyears of appraisals.

• It’s all about listening - We listen, but moreimportantly we are responsive to our clients’questions and needs. We don’t just provideclients with software, we work with them collab-oratively to accomplish their goals.

• A+ customer experience is the only way to go.From the first encounter to the implementationof the system our goal is to provide a profes-sional and courteous experience to every client.

• It pays to be different - Netchemians aredifferent. Okay, we’re not exactly "teacher’s pet"material, but we often hear our customers saythat they personally like us. Maybe that’s whywe serve over 500 school districts in 40 stateswith nearly a 100% retention rate.

Total Quality Logistics, Inc. (TQL)TQLJOBS.comTotal Quality Logistics (TQL) is a premier third-party logistics provider. We partner with thou-sands of companies nationwide to facilitate theirtruckload freight movements.

It All Started with Trust... and VegetablesKen Oaks spent 11 years as a buying andselling agent for Castellini Company, a largeCincinnati-based produce company. During histenure with the company, Oaks found only onefreight broker he could trust and reach at alltimes. Frustrated with the lack of dependabilityin the trucking industry, Oaks teamed up withthis colleague to start a third-party logistics firm.

Oaks believed that if he was having difficultyfinding and trusting reputable freight intermedi-aries, others in the industry probably were, too. After much discussion between the partners, theentrepreneurial venture of Total Quality Logisticsbegan in 1997.

Blood, Sweat, and Sleepless NightsThe partners took a big risk in starting thecompany. They exhausted their personal assets, taking out second mortgages and using theirfamily savings accounts to form a company inan industry known for little or no communicationand poor customer service. They set up shop ina small 300-square-foot office on the east sideof Cincinnati. Beginning that day, the TotalQuality Logistics operating credo was to "pledgeintegrity," committing to the highest ethical stan-dards. Today, this pledge continues to be ourgreatest competitive advantage.

In the first year, the founding partners worked24 hours a day, seven days a week. They sleptin the office and rotated overnight and weekendshifts, using a mobile phone in order to trulydeliver on our company's promise of nonstop, quality customer service.

Continuing a Tradition of IntegritySince the beginning, the partners made it apractice to be available at crucial times whenother brokerage firms were nowhere to befound. They would call potential clients in theevenings and on major holidays, when it waslikely they were experiencing problems, to stepin and address the issues immediately.

The risk and hard work paid off. That first year,Total Quality Logistics posted revenue of $1million and has continued with significant growthever since. How one man's dream became a labor of lovefor many Charles J. Miller had a dream. It all started thesummer of 1969 during a conversation with theExecutive Director of the Woodhaven LearningCenter, a school for mentally and physicallychallenged children in Columbia, Missouri. Hisdream was of a residential summer camp on

property he and his brother-in-law, Harry Brown, owned, located on the Lake of the Ozarks. Acamp where the physically and mentally chal-lenged could experience the exhilaration ofoutdoor living and play. A camp designed tomatch their special needs and provide them withthe maximum safety with freedom to enjoynature.

Meetings and discussions with concernedgroups including the Missouri State Division ofMental Health, United Cerebral Palsy ofMissouri, Missouri Association of Retarded Chil-dren and Woodhaven Learning Center led to ameeting with the Missouri Jaycee ExecutiveCommittee.

Mr. Miller told the Jaycees of his dream, and onMay 17, 1970, the Missouri Jaycees voted toadopt the camp project. Mr. Miller and Mr.Brown donated their land; 35 undeveloped acresadjoining the Lake of the Ozarks with an addi-tional 100 acres for nature trails and out-camping.

They named it Wonderland Camp and it wasincorporated as a not-for-profit foundation by theState of Missouri.

Jaycee chapters throughout the state cameforward to contribute. The Kansas City Jayceesprovided the professional architectural andplanning services. The Southern Platte Chaptertook on half the cost and labor involved ininstallation of a well and pump. And JayceeChapters throughout the state gave liberally oftheir labor to build the facilities.

Although only a few buildings werecompleted, the camp was functionally soundand usable enough to welcome its first campersin the spring of 1972. By the August closing date157 children and 83 counselors and staff hadused and thoroughly enjoyed the newWonderland Camp.

Since the first small start, construction has goneforward. Facilities have been expanded to

provide an outdoor camping experience forapproximately 1,000 campers in 2001. Thecamp is still growing.
