NEW PROCEDURES FOR PARENTS & CAR RIDERS! In order to provide a safer, more efficient environment for all, please be aware of the new car lane and pickup procedures:

1. All students who are car riders will be given ONE laminated name card. (This same

card will be used for returning students next year, so please take care of it.) Name

card(s) should be placed in the vehicle(s) the students will be picked up in each day.

2. If you know that you will need more than one sign, please feel free to made

additional signs for additional vehicles. It will be helpful if the cards you make follow

the format of the one you've received - card stock (or paper glued to cardboard) and

large, bold, block printing.

3. Eventually, with the new construction, there will only be two lanes available. Right

now we are using three lanes, so once you pull into the designated pickup area,

between the two yellow lines, please stop and make sure the name card is held

outside of the window facing the school and students.

4. Please pull as close to the car in front of you as possible with enough room for

students to walk through.

5. Once all cars have stopped, students should then move quickly to their cars. All cars

will remain in the designated area until the teacher in the front holds up the “GO” sign.

6. Parents whose children are not out front or whose children did not go to their ride

because they were not paying attention will have to exit the designated area when

instructed to do so, circle back around and come back through the car lane. Yes, that

means travel on Old Shell Road to make the circle back in front of the school. Please

instruct your child to be looking for his/her ride and NOT be on cell phones or playing

around.

7. The traffic is not bad from 2:50-3:05, so this is a good time to pick up students with

no “wait time”. Students must go to Extended Day after 3:05.

From PPS Nurse, Donna Campbell, R.N.

REMINDER TO PARENTS OF 6TH GRADE STUDENTS The tetanus-diphtheria-acelluar pertussis (Tdap) Immunization is REQUIRED for all students entering 6th grade and/or students who are 11 years old or older. SCIENCE DEADLINES – Grade 6 October 1- Begin testing for Science Project October 2- Test 3 October 6-9- Quarter Exams October 30- Handwritten Procedures due. Please see rubric that was passed out in class.

LANGUAGE ARTS NEWS – Grade 8

Eighth graders have completed the novel study of The Giver and have written an EQT essay analyzing if the theme of courage was more effectively portrayed in the novel or the movie based on the novel. The EQT essay will be averaged with the EQT exam and will count 25% of the 1st quarter exam average.

Other areas of focus have been the use of close reading strategies, writing objective summaries, and using annotation skills to improve reading comprehension.

We will complete a unit on subject verb agreement and will be reading several short story selections before exams begin.

The 2nd quarter novel will be The Tempest by William Shakespeare. We will be using

the Barron’s Shakespeare Made Easy parallel text. This version of The Tempest will be

sold at the beginning of 2nd quarter for $7. The use of annotation skills (marking the

text) and completing the guided reading questions will be imperative during our study

of Shakespeare.

STUDENTS IN THE NEWS

PPS Red Ribbon Outstanding Student Leader – EMILY GLOVER Each year we select one student to represent PPS at the county-wide Red Ribbon Celebration. PPS’s outstanding student is selected by our teachers as the Red

Ribbon leader because he or she is an individual who exemplifies the six pillars of Character promoted by the national Character Counts initiative and the Drug Education Council. These include the qualities of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. PPS is blessed to

have many students who meet these criteria so the choice is always a difficult one. This year, we are proud to announce that our Red Ribbon leader is 8th

grader, Emily Glover, selected by our 8th grade teachers. Emily is the perfect person to show how one student can lead by example and make a difference in not only our community but the world!
