Programs - 7:30 pm Contact Shawn Stevenson for program information or to offer your ideas for programs. 360-878-3967 or [email protected] Today was the day of the Two-County Double Metric Century. At the point I left we had over three-hundred people taking part. Cer- tainly not our biggest turn out, but significantly up from last year, and trending in the right direction. Before the ride I couldn’t help but think of some of the early years for the event and imagining how excited we would have been to get fifty riders let alone three hundred. Times change and sometimes not for the better. Now the Two-County is a fundraiser which allows us to support various worthy projects such as the Bicycle Commuter Contest, Bikes for Kids, and the Thurston County Bike Map. In the early days of the club we didn’t fund anything because we didn’t have any money. For many years our only source of income was mem- bership dues, which barely covered the cost of our newsletter. In fact, the first several years there was no charge for the Two-County, or any of the club rides. Those of you who read the minutes of the CBC board meetings may be aware that we will soon be considering making some major changes in the nature of events we sponsor and examining the CBC’s role in Thurston County. I’d appreciate input from club members regarding the direction the club is headed and in what ways we might better serve cycling and you our members. Please don’t say you just want to ride your bike and be left alone. I’d really like to see some fresh ideas and energy. We’ve had some interesting ideas proposed, but I do have concerns that bigger events will require more volunteers, and volunteer hours, which I’m sure most of you are aware is always a challenge. It was great that when push came to shove many of you stepped up and volunteered for the Two-County, but we always seem to struggle, with a few folks doing more work than they should. Volunteer burn out is, and has been, a major problem from the very beginning of the CBC. My hope is that if we can develop a strong consen- sus on what we would be excited to see in both events and projects that the CBC should support, some of our perennial problems might disappear. My personal E-mail is [email protected]. That isn’t a typo - ‘ste- venso,’ there is a jazz guitarist with the same name as me, he got there first. I promise I’ll read every word you send. And by the way, club elections are in October. There is always room for new blood. CBC President Bill Stevenson with Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee who rode the Two-County 105 mile route this year.

New bike and pedestrian bridge under construction AnewbicycleandpedestrianbridgeoverPacificAvenueinOlympiawillcompletetheBridgingtheGapprojectforThurstonCounty’spopularChehalisWesternTrail. LaceyresidentandWashingtonBikesboardmemberBobDuffyreports:After many years of planning, funding, designing and environmental & community review, the Chehalis Western Trail, a major bicycle/pedestrian trail in Thurston County, will receive a new bicycle/pedestrian bridge across Pacific Avenue in the City of Olympia. The Pacific Avenue crossing will close the last gap in the trail and greatly benefit all trail us-ers. Bridges have been previously constructed over the other two trail gaps – Interstate 5 and Martin Way. This project was lead by Thurston County. Construction is currently underway on the $4.7 million project and completion is slated in fall of 2014. The new bridge will make it a breeze to spin over and past the previously confusing and potentially more dangerous surface street trail alignment.
