Hey there Capital Board Members!

My name is Anastasia Slepukhova and I am honored to

be able to serve the Capital District of Key Club

International as Governor for the 2014-2015 service

year. Key Club is my life; my own club adviser even

calls me “The girl on Key Club steroids” at school! As

many of you met me in April you know just how much

energy I have- and I am truly delighted to be able to

dedicate my time into this organization which I am so

passionate about.

Even more so, I am overjoyed to be able to work with

each and every one of you during my term. I was in

your exact shoes last year and I remember just how

exciting it got, especially after Board Training when I

finally understood what my job entailed and after I had

made some friends with fellow Lieutenant Governors.

However, also remember how frustrating the month

was! There were so many ideas I had, but my clubs

simply refused to respond! That being said, my tip of

the month for you is to stay persistent and don’t give

up! Utilize your resources to the max and be sure to

reach out to your Kiwanis Zone Administrators for

help. You are not alone!

The executives and I have decided to send out a

combined newsletter and we included a lot of

information I that is relevant for the next month of

your terms, as well an introduction into how things are

going to work next year. I cannot stress how important

it is for you to read through our newsletter as well as

ask any questions you may have and finally, offer me

feedback and suggestions for topics in our future

issues. Thanks for reading. Enjoy!

Yours in Service,

Anastasia Slepukhova

UPDATE FROM INTERNATIONAL

We have raised US$50.5 million - We are so

close to reaching our halfway point of US$55

million. By reaching the halfway point, we will

be saving or protecting an additional 2.6

million lives. Isn't that absolutely incredible?

In fact, in the month of April, UNICEF and its

partners will reach 1.1 million women in Haiti.

This will cover the first and second round of

immunizations in 75 districts of the country.

We are ready to take the challenge and do this!

But we need your support! This is an awesome

responsibility and all we need to do is actually

send in and submit our funds!

Do you still have them sitting around your

treasury? What are you waiting for?

Submit them now to make a lifesaving

difference! Do NOT wait for the end of the

school year, because that delay can mean the

lives of more babies.

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

THE BASICS

We pledged to raise $80,000 as a district

Board, now what? With The Eliminate

Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF

have joined forces to eliminate maternal and

neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals

the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies

each year. The effects of the disease are

excruciating — newborns suffer repeated,

painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity

to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than

100 million mothers and their future babies

must be immunized. It will take US$110

million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF

and every member of the Kiwanis family. It

takes just $1.80 to provide a vaccine for a

mother. Your club can do a million different

fundraisers such as Trick-or-Treat for

UNICEF and Miracle Walk! One of the easiest

fundraisers is to sell Eliminate wrist bands!

They are cheap, and at the same time

modern so your friends will want some!

Start planning a fundraiser with your clubs

today! Make sure to get Kiwanis & CKI

involved for even more success.

The four Lieutenant Governors to the

left from last year received

Elimidalions for raising $625 or more

for the ELIMINATE Project. This is my

challenge for each and every single one

of you! Even the executives have

pledged to each raise $625! You will be

awarded an Elimidalion at DCON if you

do raise the necessary amount.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TIPS

REACHING OUT TO YOUR CLUBS

One of the most important yet trickiest parts of

being a Lieutenant Governor is getting in contact

with your clubs. We know you have a lot of plans

for your Divisions but it can get hard to plan any

Divisional functions if your clubs and officers

don’t respond. Here is your go to guide if you are

having difficulties. However, if you wish to talk

individually please let us knows and we will help!

1) Start with the contacts you have from

your past immediate LTG.

a. Send an introductory email to:

i. Club Adviser

ii. Past Immediate officers

iii. Kiwanis Club

iv. Kiwanus Lt. Governor

2) Do your research.

a. Most schools list their clubs and a

person of contact. Use this to your

advantage and contact the school.

Don’t be afraid to give them a call.

b. If you know an officer’s name but not

their email, try and look them up on

Facebook or ask a friend that goes to

their school.

3) Use your resources.

a. Reach out to your Kiwanis. No Key

Club can start or exist without a

sponsoring Kiwanis club (Note, there

are some exceptions) so use that to

your advantage. The sponsoring

Kiwanis club likely know the club

faculty adviser or someone at the

school. Contact them and ask for help.

When contacting individuals remember what we

learned at Board Training in our Elevator Speech

activity; you are not selling the product, but rather

the benefit. Tell the clubs they get special perks by

being involved with the district like the

opportunities of DCON, Fall Rally and

scholarships! Good luck, and don’t hesitate to ask.

for help!

7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE

TEENS

Habit 1: Be Proactive- Take responsibility

for your life.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind -

Define your mission and goals in mind.

Habit 3: Put First things First -Prioritize,

and do the most important things first.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win- Have an everyone-

can-win attitude.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to

Be Understood- Listen to people sincerely.

Habit 6: Synergize -Work together to

achieve more.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw - Renew yourself

regularly.

PLAN AHEAD

School’s out WOOHOO! After you have a chance to

take a deep breath and enjoy your freedom, sit

down and start planning ahead. You have now

been in office for three months and should have a

good idea what your duties and responsibilities

are. Brainstorm all of the things you would like to

get accomplished in your term and start creating a

plan. Perhaps you would like to get more clubs to

respond to you, or raise the $625 for Eliminate.

Start.Planning. Get the busy work out of your way,;

create issues for future newsletters and guidelines

for Outstanding Officer Awards. The more you plan

ahead, the more successful your term will be and

the more time you will have for fixing any issues or

troubleshoots that might come up along the way.

Just like you, the executives have the summer off

too so use this to your advantage and let us know if

you need any assistance with anything!

UPDATES AND CHANGES

Lt. GOVERNOR GOOGLE DRIVE

There has been a Google Drive set up for all Board

Members. This Drive includes all the resources

you could possibly want and ever need. We really

encourage you to use it and go for guidance, there

are resources for your officers, advisers and

plenty for you when it comes to making your

newsletter and planning your Divisional Council

Meetings.

You can find it here: http://goo.gl/va6NMb

MONTHLY PHONE CALLS

Nothing- no emails or texts can replace person-

person communication which is why the

executives will be doing monthly phone calls to

the Lieutenant Governors. Because we have such a

large board it is important everyone remembers

their phone call date and are ready to talk. We are

usually flexible so just let us know in advance if

we need to reschedule. Also, you do not have to

wait until your “date” to talk to us! Remember, we

want to serve you so you can best serve your

members, if you want to have a phone call earlier

don’t hesitate to ask.

WELCOMING OUR NEW Int. TRUSTEE

As much as we love Michelle, we will have to part

in July at the International Convention. However,

we will also be paired up with a new International

Trustee very shortly afterwards. To extend them a

warm welcome, we would like to put together a

“Welcome to Capital” binder. It would include

information about our District’s history, our board

and traditions. To allow our new Trustee to

familiarize them with us, we ask that you put

together a page about yourself and your Division.

There are over 40 Capital District Board members

so make your page fun, colorful and entertaining

for our new trustee. Please send your page in a

Word Doc or a PowerPoint by July 15th.

COMMITTEES

Committees have already been determined and

assignments have been made. They will be sent

out very shortly along with your first set of tasks.

Serving on a committee is a very important role of

being a Lieutenant Governor because it is your

chance to make a difference and leave your mark

on the District. Every committee will have a Chair

that organizes the monthly committee meetings,

leads the group and fills out monthly committee

reports. The application is due June 10th.

You can apply here: http://goo.gl/EpwBlw

KEY LEADER AMBASSADOR

A member of our District will be appointed to

serve as a Key Leader Ambassador to promote

Key Leader Weekend in Capital. They would

receive most of their training from International

and would have immense support from our board.

This individual will also have special roles at

District wide functions like Fall Rally and DCON.

Please email me any nominations for this

position.

ELIMIDALION

For those who remember, last year at DCON, four

past Lieutenant Governor’s received a very

honorable award- The Elimidalion. This award is

given to anyone who has raised $625 or more

toward the Eliminate Project. This month all the

executives have pledged to raise these funds so

we also challenge you! Lead by example- it will be

easier trying to convince your clubs to participate

if they know you yourself are putting in hard work

into something you care about. Remember you

will receive a medal at DCON as an added

incentive to the feeling of knowing you helped

save over 350 lives! There are so many

fundraising ideas, be sure to check the Google

Drive for them! Let us know if you need help

planning!

SERVINCE KNOWS NO SEASON

WHY SERVE IN THE SUMMER?

School might be over, but that certainly doesn’t mean

that service should be! In fact, because we have so

much free time, why not do more? There is a trend

amongst most clubs in the District with the belief that

Key Club is on the same schedule as the school

calendar- it’s not. Our year begins in April, and

because service knows no season there should always

be events and service opportunities available

throughout the year for members. As a leader in Key

Club, one of your biggest tasks is to enable others to

do service, this is your chance to really make a

difference in a cause of your choice and strengthen

your Division in the process.

HOW TO SERVE

Provide opportunities! Work with your officers and

help plan events. Key Club is not always work and

business, it should also be fun! The summer is the

perfect time to help members build relationships and

friendships which will help strengthen any club and

put it on a path to success. There is a big difference

between having members come to meetings and

events because they need points or service hours, and

members who are truly driven and passionate about

Key Club. There is that one person we all know who

had helped us with understanding the real Key Club,

and just as we are in debt to that individual- it is now

our duty to help others uncover the gem. Inspire your

members, change their lives.

EXECUTIVE REMARKS

Hello Capital District Board!

Firstly, I appreciate everyone’s hard work in putting

out monthly reports and newsletters during

finals. Keep it up! As the summer slowly creeps

closer, it’s definitely harder to stay focused (I’m the

perfect example). But knowing that the board is

comprised of such passionate key clubbers, I believe

that you all will remain in contact with your clubs.

I hope that you all are as stoked as I am for ICON in Anaheim! I’m not only looking forward to all of the Disney fun that we’ll have, but also the workshops and campaigning that we’ll witness. It’s so exciting thinking about how in a month, we’ll be meeting with other Key Clubbers from around the country (and trading pins woo).

Because of the new method of online submissions that the Capital District is using, not everyone is fully comfortable yet with the process of filling them out.

Thanks!

Hojin Yoon

District Secretary

HOJIN’S TIPS FOR MONTHLY REPORTS

- Complete sentences are NOT NECESSARY.

- If you need extra room in the boxes, they can be

stretched out on if you click on the corners!

- Although they can easily be filled out in 3 minutes,

putting those extra few minutes to elaborate really

gives us (those who receive the reports) a good feel of

what’s happening in your division.

Here are the links to the different forms:

For LTG reports (due by the 10th of every month): http://goo.gl/QMTnmt For Club Visitations: http://goo.gl/O4nb2Q And for Club Monthly Reports: http://goo.gl/SRct4F

Hello Capital District Board!

The letters informed the schools that they’ve yet to

send theirs dues and that they should get on that

ASAP or else they miss out on a bunch of

opportunities. Shortly after I sent these letters, a

couple of schools sent their dues and we've officially

hit 15,000 members!! However, we could still use

more people so let’s go over the reinstatement

process again. If a club is suspended, a fine of 100$

and them turning in their dues would convert them

into a club of good standing again. If the club

neglected to turn in their dues for 2 years, they are

considered an inactive club. When a club reaches

inactive status, the club has to be re-chartered which

would at least cost 300$. If you have any questions on

any of this, feel free to contact me anytime!

EXECUTIVE REMARKS

7

Hey everybody!

This year’s first edition of the Capital Key is almost

finished and will be published by the end of June.

Thanks to everyone who helped out and wrote

articles for that! It’s now time to start thinking about

the second edition. Although it isn’t going to be

published until we’re back in school, I’ve made a list

of the four different topics that I would like LTG’s to

cover with articles. If you’d like to write one, please

let me know within the next month or so which of the

topics you would like to write about. Around the end

of the summer, I’m going to start assigning articles

that haven’t been chosen to juniors.

Anyways, here is the list of topics for the September

Capital Key:

• ICON - Either write about experiences or about

something you learned at a workshop there (1-2 for

each)

• KOTIO – Write about relevant experience to or

participation in this year’s Governor’s project (1-2)

• Fall Rally - experience from last year in addition to

expectations for this year (2)

• New I-board – if you met anyone from the new

International Board at ICON or your hopes for the

year in terms of our International relations (0-2)

I have also set up an online Handbook to guide Club

Editors through the newsletters’ creation process

next year. A link will be emailed out to the entire

board shortly, as well as all of the editors that are in

record in the District. The Handbook includes club

newsletter templates, a “cheat sheet” for the KCI

Graphics Standards, and a folder of logos and graphics

that are free for you to use as well!

Thanks so much everybody!
