TRANSPARENCYDear Parishioners,

Transparency is one of the goals of our parish financial plan. We want everyparishioner to know what our financial position is. This heartbeat outlines the financial position of the parish as of June 30, 2019.

Three factors impacted our normal operating revenue and left us about $40,000 short for the fiscal year. One factor was that we suspended our Heart to Heart fund drive for the year because of the TTT drive. Another thing that impacted our ordinary income was the fact we were well short of our collection goals. The third factor that impacted our income was that we received less bequests. Bequests of the past few years have added to our endowment fund and have helped pay for capital needs.

We are on solid financial footing because we have saved funds as we could, but we would like to see our ordinary income rise over the next year. We must be able to pay our ongoing bills and balance our budget. I thank all those who have been so generous with their time and treasure over the last year. This has led to the success of our capital fund drive and the sacrifices made will help us with the ongoing improvement of our parish plant. Your love for Sacred Heart is apparent to me. We ask God to continue to provide us with the resources we need to spread the Gospel message in our community.

Blessings, Fr. Mark DeSutter Pastor

100 YEAR COLLECTION In conjunction with our Centennial Celebration, our Sacred Heart Parish is now promoting a special 100 year collection. All monies collected will be donated to the Sacred Heart Capital Campaign. About 100 years ago, a growing community of local Belgian Catholics gathered and started our Parish. They pooled their time and precious resources and invested in this beautiful church that we worship in today. They dreamed of building a welcoming Catholic community so that their families and future families could share and worship. Today we prosper from that investment. With your continued support, we can share this with the next generations. Please fill out personal information details on inserted envelope, enclose contribution and then either return envelope in next week’s collection or return in mail. Our request today is for each parish family to donate $1 for every year our parish has been serving God’s faithful or $100 per family. On behalf of Sacred Heart Church, Thank You so much for your consideration.CORNERSTONE

BLESSING & MASS There will be a re-enactment of the original Cornerstone Blessing held on Oct 23, 1919. On that historic day Cardinal Mercier traveled to Moline from Belgium to lay and bless the cornerstone of our new church. Festivities will begin with an outdoor Mass on Oct 20 at 11 a.m., weather permitting. The 9:00 Mass will be cancelled on this day. Please bring your own lawn chairs. As the parish did 100 years ago, Sacred Heart has invited some special guests to join us in the anniversary celebration including the mayors of Moline and Rock Island, clergy from across the QC and the Diocese. The Belgian Consulate has been invited to send a representative. The procession that brought the Cardinal to church that day will be re-enacted with a procession around the Sacred Heart campus. There will be a showing of the items recently uncovered from a time capsule buried 100 years ago in the cornerstone. Contents of a brand new time capsule with various pieces of Sacred Heart’s modern day life and history will also be on display. There will be food available for purchase from various vendors, and games of all sorts for the children.

Dear Parishioners,

In January we publicly launched our Today Tomorrow Together Campaign, a joint effort among the parishes of Sacred Heart and Christ the King and Seton School. We set a collective goal of $5 million. To date we have received cash and pledges of over $4 million.

To meet the needs and ambitious goals of Sacred Heart we set a parish goal of $3 million. As of September 1, Sacred Heart has received pledges of nearly $1.9 million. This significant accomplishment is a result of the generous donations many of you have provided. As a parish we are also committed to helping Seton School achieve their goal of $875,000. To date Sacred Heart parishioners have pledged an additional $400,000 to make needed improvements to the Seton facilities. As we began this campaign, we outlined a three-tiered approach for Sacred Heart. Tier 1 includes $1 million to be used for tuck-pointing of Sacred Heart Church and to restore our stained-glass windows. The tuck-pointing is now complete. The stained-glass windows restoration is underway with the hope to complete by September of 2020.

Tier 2 of our drive was $300,000. This money will be used to relocate the priest’s living space. The money is pledged, and we are laying the groundwork for the possible move of the priests into the Lee Parish Center. Space is available now that Seton has relocated all students into the school buildings.

The Tier 3 goal is $1.7 million. We have about $600,000 in pledges for this goal. As we receive additional pledges we hope to put an addition on our church to include a protected drop-off area for our parishioners, larger bathrooms to assist the physically challenged and a parish gathering space. This new building would sit where the present rectory is. The current rectory would be demolished due to the large expense required to continue repairing and using it.

As I opened with, we have made a lot of progress in the first nine months of a three-year campaign. Raising $1.9 million of our $3 million goal is a HUGE accomplishment. The capital campaign committee and I would like to express our gratitude to those who have helped our parish accomplish so much in so little time. A listing of those who have donated to this campaign as of September 1st is listed in this publication. Please note some people chose to remain anonymous. I encourage everyone to attend the commemoration of the laying of the cornerstone of Sacred Heart. This will be held October 20th. This parish gathering is a celebration of our history. It honors the commitment and work of parishioners who went before us. It also recognizes you, our current parishioners, and the generosity you put forth that will allow us to go forward into the next 100 years.

Our prayer is that the Lord will continue to bless our plans as we seek to achieve all the goals that are so necessary for the future health of our parish. May God who has begun the good work bring it to fruition. In addition, we wish to thank Fr. Levitt and Christ the King Parish who have given towards the Visitation Window. Blessings, Fr. Mark DeSutter Pastor

As hard as we try, we may have missed a name or two. Please accept our apology and let us know immediately so corrections can be made. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work together to build the Kingdom of God.

A CLOSER LOOK: PARISH FINANCES We invite you to take a look back on the financial performance of our parish for the past year which ended June 30, 2019. When preparing the budget for the 2018-19 year, we anticipated that it would be a financially challenging one. We were cancelling our largest annual fundraiser, the Heart to Heart Fund, which is a substantial portion of our ordinary income. We are undertaking a $3 million capital campaign. As the year progressed, bequests, which come from estates, were down leading to less income. These vary from year to year. Overall, when we look back, we still have good news to share. We are very blessed. Due to the continued generosity of our families, our parish is strong. Sacred Heart Parishioners have donated approximately $2.3 million for Sacred Heart and Seton School. The large amount of monies we have collected in our Today Tomorrow Together campaign took our fundraising dollars way up. We are mindful of the challenges presented by declining income and rising costs. With your continuedfinancial support we are confident we will meet our goals for the upcoming year.

Highlights and items of note regarding our budget are:

• As a Finance Committee we work to maintain a balanced budget, spending only the monies we have.• Parish income fell short of expenses. We ended the year with a $45,071 loss.• Total revenues were down $290,331 from last year, and $63,606 below budget not including TTT Capital Campaign.• Sunday collections decreased $27,189.• We received $67,000 in bequests through the generosity of our faithful parishioners. Last year we received $210,000 in similar bequests. Again, we cannot rely on these gifts every year.• Educating the youth of our parish is vital to our future. We share the costs of these programs by funding administrative expenses for Religious Ed. Families contributed $5,855 toward the cost of supplies.• Through participation in John Deere Birdies for Charity we received $14,386.• Parish expenses increased $24,254 which was an approximately 2% increase across the board. Our staff works hard at being efficient and underspends in some key areas to help us operate below budgeted costs.• We are dedicated to ensuring that Seton and Alleman remain healthy and continue to provide a quality education enriched by the teachings of our faith. We spent $470,598 to support Catholic schools.• Our Annual Diocesan Appeal goal for 2018-2019 was $147,521. The shortfall of $30,574 was paid as a part of parish expenses. • Facilities expenses, excluding capital improvements, were the same as last year and slightly under budget.• The valuable work of our many volunteer committees save our parish thousands of dollars in repair and maintenance expenses. You are greatly appreciated.

• We suspended the annual Heart to Heart Fund for special projects for the year. Last year that provided over $95,000.• We launched the Today Tomorrow Together Capital Campaign to address the needs of our parish and school. So far the parish has collected $785,266. We spent $298,974 toward capital improvements. We will continue to maintain and improve our campus as additional funds are collected.• We are debt free. • We have a cash reserve of nearly $600,000 when TTT campaign contributions are excluded.• Our parish endowment fund remains over $920,000.

We appreciate the leadership, dedication, and commitment of Fr. Mark. We are also thankful for the opportunity to serve the parishioners of Sacred Heart. It is your contributions of time, talent and treasure that make this a strong parish. Please continue to pray for God’s blessings on our efforts.

COFFEE CAFÉ & WELCOME SUNDAYS AT SACRED HEART

On Sunday, October 13, we will welcome our new families who have joined us since last June at our October Welcome Sunday and Coffee Café. New parishioners will attend the 9:00 am Sunday Mass and then all are invited following Mass to a brunch reception in the Cafeteria of Culemans Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity for a Meet & Greet of our new families!

JOIN US AT OUR MASS OF REMEMBRANCE ON NOV. 2

Close to the feast of All Saints and All Souls, our parish remembers those who died in the past year. At the 4:00 Mass on Saturday, November 2nd we will also have a ritual for announcingthe names of our deceased accompanied by the traditional candle lighting. After the Mass families will gather in the Parish Rectory for a light reception. Invitations will be mailed in mid-October to a family member of the deceased. The invitation then can be shared with family and friends of their loved one.

BUS TRIP TO BOVARD STUDIOS

So many parishioners have asked and are interested in how our beautiful stained-glass windows are being restored. Well, guess what? You will now have the opportunity to visit in person the Bovard Studios in Fairfield, Iowa. The trip is planned for Wednesday, November 6, 2019. It is a 2 hour and 20 min ride, so the bus will depart around 6:00am from Sacred Heart. For any questions, please contact Don Lewis at 309-230-6200.

IN HONOR OF OUR VETERANS’ AND THEIR FAMILIES

In observance of Veterans Day, November 11, Sacred Heart will honor our dedicated service men and women for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. At this beautiful patriotic liturgy, we will recognize all five branches of the military- Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The celebration wouldn’t be complete without patriotic songs for all to sing. We ask for your prayers for all members of the armed forces, especially those who are serving from our parish. Our Veterans’ Day celebration will take place at the 11:00am Mass on Sunday, November 10. A luncheon will be served following the Mass for all Veterans, family members, friends and parishioners. We hope you will join us in honoring all who have served. We ask that all Veterans call Suzie at 762-2362, so we can reserve special seating at both the Mass and luncheon. Please call by Nov. 1st. All Veterans and one guest are free. Others $7.00 for the luncheon. God Bless America!Designed by Mandle Design, Inc.
