I was working with a young person who was not engaging well in education – attendance and motivation was poor and he was becoming frustrated in lessons. He had always displayed an interest in working outdoors and spent his weekends doing odd jobs in local farms. I thought he might be more interested in a practical hands-on course and referred him to Capel Manor College. Capel interviewed him, enrolled him onto the Foundation Learning course and put in place an individual package of support. He now loves being at college! His attendance and confidence has improved and he is looking forward to studying Level 1 Countryside next year and a future in the land-based industry.

WELCOMEOur Foundation Learning and 14–16 provision is a transition year that prepares young people to progress onto land-based vocational pathways.

Students receive higher levels of individually focused support and will develop personal, social and employability skills. They undertake a range of class-based and practical hands-on activities to introduce them to various parts of the land-based industry; such as animal care, countryside and the environment, floristry, horticulture, wildlife and habitats.

Students also develop skills in English, Maths and personal development to prepare for further education, apprenticeships or employment.

Foundation Learning is a provision for learners aged 14 to 19 who are working predominantly at Entry Level 2. We work with young people aged 14 to 16 on a day release from local schools and with young people aged 16 to 18 on a case-by-case basis, including those that have an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan).

Our Foundation Learning programmes are designed to support progression to full vocational courses and the aim is to:• support improved engagement,

participation, achievement and progression through Entry Level and Level 1 towards Level 2

Foundation Learning is all about progression for learners towards their intended destination, wherever possible to Level 2 or, for some learners, to independent living or supported employment. With the right level of support learners will have the capacity to progress to positive outcomes. Foundation Learning should enable more young people to achieve greater economic and social well-being.

• provide a sound foundation for employment and progression

• ensure that learners gain a minimum level and range of skills.

Our Foundation Learning programmes encompass three distinct components:• land-based/vocational subject

knowledge, skills and understanding• personal and social development learning

functional skills in English and Maths.

These components are supported by a ‘wrap-around’ of support, information, advice and guidance (IAG), effective initial assessment (BKSB), comprehensive ongoing review and additional support as needed.

For health and safety reasons, our students need to have proof of an up-to-date tetanus injection and wear steel toe-capped boots for all practical sessions.

FOUNDATION LEARNING PROGRAMME IN LAND-BASED AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES Starts: SeptemberDuration: 1 year full-timeAvailable at: Crystal Palace, Enfield and Gunnersbury Park

This course is for young people aged 16 to 18 (or 19 to 24 year olds with an EHCP) with a willingness to work outdoors and an interest in the land-based courses we offer. We also accept young people aged 14 to 16 who are home schooled on this programme. It runs for one year from September to July for three days a week, from 9am to 4pm (days to be confirmed at the start of the academic year).

Topics include:• practical and theory work incorporating a

mixture of animal care, countryside and the environment, floristry, horticulture, wildlife and habitats

• functional skills in English and Maths taught in a practical way using real-life situations

• core units which include employability, enterprise and team working skills.

Entry requirementsStudents must be willing to work outdoors and take part in practical activities. An interest in gardening, working outdoors or with animals is a key requirement of the course. Students must have achieved at least Entry Level 2 in English and Maths (the approximate equivalent of a Year 8 secondary school literacy and numeracy level).

An application form will need to be submitted along with information relating to any special educational needs (for example an EHCP, reports from other agencies, or school reports). Potential students will be invited for an interview that will include an assessment of literacy and numeracy and a tour of our facilities.

SCHOOL INFILL ALTERNATIVE PROVISION PROGRAMME IN LAND-BASED AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Starts: Specific starting dates throughout the academic year, see table on page 6 for detailsDuration: 1, 2 or 3 days per weekAvailable at: Crystal Palace, Enfield and Gunnersbury Park

This programme is aimed at young people currently in Year 10 or 11 who have difficulty engaging with mainstream education for a variety of reasons. Group size is a maximum of 12 young people and students’ infill onto our main programme. We can meet the needs of students with additional needs. The main aim is to develop practical skills but also communication, teamwork and employability skills. Skills are assessed predominantly through practical activities with some portfolio building.

Topics include:• practical and theory work incorporating

a mixture of animal care, countryside and the environment, floristry, horticulture, wildlife and habitats

• functional skills in English and Maths taught in a practical way using real-life situations

• core units which include employability, enterprise and team working skills.

Students can attend between one and three days per week, options can be discussed with referring partners based on the requirements of the individual student.

Students must be working at Entry Level 2 in English and Maths (this will be assessed as part of the interview process). What next?On successful completion of the course, students have the opportunity to apply for our full-time Level 1 or 2 courses in animal care, environmental conservation, floristry, horticulture or an apprenticeship.

More than 80% of our students stay at Capel and progress onto one of our vocational pathways.

I really liked being at Capel Manor College as the grounds are something really special, I also liked my tutors, they really helped me to achieve.

I progressed from the Foundation Learning course to the step-up course, I really liked the new and exciting challenge that this offered me.

I am not sure what I am going to study next but I feel that Capel has given me the confidence to move on to the next stage of my journey.

BESPOKE SCHOOL GROUP PROGRAMMES IN LAND-BASED AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Schools or other educational establishments may choose to put forward several of their pupils to make up a bespoke programme.

We offer individually tailored programmes for mainstream and specialist schools to provide an opportunity for Year 10 or 11 pupils to:

• achieve vocational qualifications • enhance their GCSE studies with

hands-on learning to reinforce the curriculum

• discover land-based studies and vocational skills

• re-engage with education.

Attendance can range from half-a-day to 3 days per week through the College year and shorter programmes can be designed on request.

Sarah* has autism and experienced substantial anxiety at school. This led to poor attendance and a quiet and withdrawn appearance. Sarah did not achieve any qualifications at school. She enrolled onto the Foundation Learning course and though she was still quiet, it was felt she was enjoying the course. She spent time in the common room at lunch, where she was supported to make friends with her peers. Through lunch activities and practical horticulture lessons it was identified that Sarah had a particular talent for creative design. A floristry taster session was arranged for Sarah and she produced work to an excellent standard. Sarah quickly progressed onto the Floristry course where she has flourished. Volunteering for Team Capel on weekends has also introduced her to other students across the College and improved her confidence working with the public. Sarah is likely to progress onto the Level 2 Floristry course and a career in floristry.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL VISITS

Many primary and secondary schools bring school-aged pupils for educational visits to our centres and farms.

Visits can be tailored to suit the needs of your students and link with curriculum topics, such as habitats or mini-beasts.

Our visits are led by experienced educational leaders and can include a range of practical activities relating to nature and wildlife.
