PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

By the time you read this, the clubs playing in next season’s Super League’s A, B and C would have been confirmed.

With the play-off games having been played on Wednesday, as well as the last remaining fixtures in the Top 9 Champions League, promotion-relegation battles have gone right down to the wire.

This past weekend at City Park was quite exciting. I was impressed to see the rugby gees at one central venue.

This could be something to build on for the future. I was particularly surprised to see the number of teams that

@jpnaude

This is what club rugby is all about. The passion of representing the community is high and fuels the desire of these players to continue fighting to the very end.

This past weekend saw the semi-finals of the Top 6 Knockout competition take place at City Park. It was a day filled with drama as teams battled it out for a place in the 4 October final at DHL Newlands. Belhar provided one of the shocks of the season when they defeated Hamiltons. They will now face Durbell in the final after they beat False Bay in the other semi-final. Milnerton and Villager will compete in the Super League B final, while the Super League C final will be played between Franschoek and Langa.

With the President’s Cup final sbeing played at DHL Newlands next Saturday, this is a great opportunity for our club heroes to showcase their talents. This is just reward for what has been a long and arduous season.

Best of luck to all clubs – and their fans – competing over the next few weeks.Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

were not playing, but never the less, came to support those on the field. I would imagine many teams were there to see if any results would have an impact on their own log points.

Certainly, the big upset was the victory for Belhar over Hamiltons. This also highlighted that the overall level of club rugby has improved and that no team can be taken for granted on the day. Now we hope to see a good turnout at DHL Newlands at the President’s Cup.

Super League A will be keenly contested between Belhar and Durbell, Super League B between Villager and Milnerton and in Super League C, it’s a clash between Langa and Franschoek.

We’ll be turning most of our media attention the big day as we hope you will to. As usual you can catch the highlights and interviews weekly on Cape Rugby TV at 9pm on Cape Town TV and DSTV channel 263.

Have a fantastic rugby weekend,

Belhar sealed a place in the President’s Cup final with a remarkable victory over Hamiltons.

We showed our belief against the odds. We proved a lot of people wrong today. We stuck to our game plan and it’s a dream come true for these boys.

I’m glad they will have this opportunity to play at DHL Newlands and showcase

their talents.

MARK WILLARDBELHAR COACH

Belhar provided one of the shocks of the season when they overcame the mighty Hamiltons in a dramatic semi-final match at

City Park.

In the howling wind, Belhar expertly used the elements to their advantage in the first half to peg Hamiltons back inside their own 22.

Hammies showed their class to gain the advantage in the second half in the face of mounting Belhar pressure as Mark Willard’s men were running the ball from everywhere.

Captain on the day Cheslin Roberts marshalled his Belhar troops well and managed to get on the score sheet after a sweeping move.

Belhar’s guts and determination eventually paid off as a try in the dying stages of the match saw them pick up the much-deserved win and a place in the final at DHL Newlands on 4 October.

CHESLIN ROBERTSBELHAR’S CAPTAIN ON THE DAY

We said we wanted to come here and give it to Hamiltons and we did just that. We’re going to DHL

Newlands and we’re so proud. We did this for the community. We’re in the final and we won’t disappoint. We’re not going to

hold back.

The guys stuck to their guns out there. We always knew we could pull it off. This is a huge

morale booster for the club as a lot of people doubted

us. The game was played in a good spirit. This is a massive

It has been an exceptional season for Villager, who secured the Super League B title in dramatic style.

The club underwent a dramatic overhaul and has reaped the benefits of having young, hungry, locally-based players in their ranks.

One of the standout talents this season has been blindside flank Brodie Blows. He is dynamic on defence and a real menace for opponents with his never-say-die attitude. His good form earned him a call-up to the Disas squad, who he’s representing on tour.

“I was surprised to get the call-up,” he says. “It’s been a great tour so far and my form has been good.

“The adjustment to a completely amateur set-up has been a 100% effort from the club,” he adds. “We’re playing rugby for the right reasons and the results on the field have shown. [Coach] Gunner has been amazing and the players are all playing for him.”

The club will now compete in Super League A next season and Blows is excited about the challenge.

“We’re 100% ready,” he says. “Hopefully, Gunner will work his magic and a few more guys will join.”

BRODIE BLOWSVILLAGER

St George’s can count themselves unlucky not to have secured automatic promotion to Super League A after a stellar season. The club has done well to blend youth with experience, which has seen vice-captain Morne Adams form a big part of their success.

Adams, who is a seasoned club rugby campaigner, played provincial rugby for the Falcons before returning to the Cape in 2009 and joining the Lulus this season. He is a physical player, who brings a structure and calmness to the backline.

“This has been my best season,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’ve really enjoyed playing for my community and the people I’ve grown up with.”

As one of the older heads at the club, Adams has taken on the role as mentor to some of the talented youngsters in the squad.

“I try and help out as much as I can,” he says. “There are a lot of talented youngsters here and their careers are beginning to flourish. We’ve had a few call-ups to the Disa squad, which is something to celebrate.”

Kulsen is a famous rugby name in Paarl rugby. Geuron Kulsen is the latest member of the family to make an impact for the region.

The speedster currently plies his trade at Lower Paarl, who have demolished all before them in a record-breaking season. The club finished the regular season with a 100% record, as they did in the Top 6 competition.

“We have a well-balanced side and everyone puts in a shift,” Kulsen tells Cape Rugby TV. “The commitment levels have been great all season and we have a good core with strong leaders.”

Kulsen, who finished the regular season as the top try-scorer, is quick to acknowledge the role that the club’s supporters played in their success.

“We have one of the biggest support bases in the Paarl region,” he says. “There is a feel-good factor at the club and our supporters are a big part of that.

“Besides the Top 8 competition starting soon, we also has our traditional derby against Young People’s coming up,” he adds. “I’m coming back from injury and I’m raring to go!”

The name “Nani” Osman is synonymous with SK Walmers. The experienced back is revered at the club and is a hero to many of the younger generation as he’s represented DHL Western Province at Vodacom Cup level.

SK Walmers drastically changed their approach to focus solely on recruiting locally-based players. They finished the season fifth in Super League A.

“We’ve had a good season considering the changes at the club,” Osman tells Cape Rugby TV. “The newer guys who were brought in did well in their respective roles.

“We needed a longer time to gel,” he adds. “We started off slow, but picked up momentum and ended the season strongly.”

The club just missed out on a place in the President’s Cup semi-finals after a narrow loss to Belhar. The playmaker is aware of the tournament’s potential.

“The President’s Cup is a great way for the younger guys to gain exposure,” he says. “It’s a step in the right direction and it’s good for club rugby.”

SUPERB SEASONHelderberg enjoyed a great campaign in Super League A.

Helderberg’s return to Super League A went under the radar this season, yet was a remarkable campaign. The club finished eighth, above stalwarts like SK Walmers and Tygerberg.

“This season has been a whole club effort,” club administrator Corne Strydom tells Cape Rugby TV. “We have a strong committee, that has worked hard as well as a good coaching staff led by Nico De Villiers.

“In recent years, we’ve been up and down. We’re enjoying our time back in Super League A and competing with the best clubs in the province.”

On the field, the club has put in some remarkable performances, which included impressive wins over NNK and Kuils River. What was just as impressive, though, were their performances against the top teams, which proved their worth in the top division.

“We have excellent players here,” says Strydom. “Guys have joined us from Hamiltons and Maties, and there is a good mix of youth and experience. Our club stalwarts, in particular, have had a great season.”

Helderberg is a family-oriented club. The picturesque Charles Morkel Stadium is one of the best venues on the club rugby circuit.

A highlight of the season is the annual Helderberg Extreme 7s tournament. The club hosts 16 clubs and 16 high schools, that all compete for a R50 000 prize. It’s extremely well supported and is a festival of running rugby.

“Nico’s sevens background has really come through in our game,” says Strydom. “That tournament has helped raise the profile of the club on and off the field.”

Gaining MomentumRetreat enjoyed an impressive finish to the 2014 season.

Next year Retreat will celebrate their 125th year serving their local community.

Nobody embodies the spirit of the club more than chairman Anthony Amalcin. Not only does he perform his role with distinction, but he has also been head coach of the 1st XV for the past two years, as well as an occasional referee for the junior sides.

“I think it’s fair to say my Saturdays belong to Retreat RFC!” he tells Cape Rugby TV.

What could’ve been a season of disappointment for the club after failing to qualify for the Champions League has turned into a campaign of great promise as some stunning end-of-season form has resulted in an unbeaten six-game run in the Southern League Top 8 competition.

“It’s been a good season for us,” Amalcin says.

“We’ve unearthed some promising players, who have come through the ranks.

“At Retreat, we pride ourselves on being humble and being down-to-earth. Our juniors are taught that no one is above the club and that you must act like a team.”

At the time of writing, the club was getting ready for their Top 8 final against Titans.

“It’s a very important game for the club,” says Amalcin. “We’ve got to end the season strongly and begin planning for next year. The new format has given us the platform to bring our talented youngsters through.

“Our goal is to make the Champions League next season. The team is currently unbeaten after six rounds, and the atmosphere at the club is always very positive.”

“I was surprised when I got the call,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “It only really sank in when I got together with the squad and pulled the jersey over my head for the first time.

“That was a great experience for me. Although the results didn’t go our way, it was a very competitive week and I learned a lot.”

Da Silva is a livewire on attack and defence, and never gives his opposition a moments rest with his high work-rate. Bishops have had a good season compared to 2013, and he has been a big part of that turnaround.

“It’s been a good year for us,” he says. “We managed to bring a sense of pride back to the jersey with our performances. The come-from-behind victory over Rondebosch was particularly special.”

Next season Da Silva will be at the Western Province Institute.

“I’m very excited about that. I want to make the DHL Western Province U19 squad next season, but I’m taking it step by step.”

Rugby is an immensely popular sport in the Stellenbosch region and Kylemore has benefited from a growing level of interest in the game.

“Interest has certainly increased in recent years,” says Smith. “Our kids are provided with good facilities and our youth coaches are all BokSmart accredited.

“We want to keep the kids at the club and show them that rugby can be a career,” she adds. “We’ve produced several Craven Week players, such as Herschel, which we’re very proud of.”

Located in Stellenbosch, Kylemore are growing their youth rugby and is proving to be a great developmental club for their players.

Paul Roos scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies, who captained the SA Sevens U18s and was a member of the DHL Western Province U18 Craven Week side, is a graduate of the club’s youth set-up.

“There is a lot of talent in the Kylemore area,” club secretary Adri Smith tells Cape Rugby TV. “The youngsters look up to the senior players and try to emulate their heroes.”

The club has around 120 youth players ranging from U9 to U18. The U14s recently won an Easter sevens festival.

MAJOR POTENTIALKylemore’s youth rugby is making great strides.

CLUB TO PRO

Which clubs have you represented?I’ve been playing for UCT since 2011. I managed to pick up a couple of Varsity Cup titles along the way! This year, I was playing in Super League A before I got the call-up to the DHL Western Province Currie Cup squad.

Do you ever take the time to watch club rugby?Yes, absolutely. Being fresh out of Super League A, I was watching the league with interest this season. I’ll always take the time to watch UCT when I get the chance.

What do you think of the standard of Super League A this year? It’s been good. It’s a real physical league and you have to front up. Teams like SK Walmers and Belhar are a real handful, especially on their own patch, so you have to be ready for a physical battle.

How has club rugby helped contributed to your development?I’ve been playing for UCT since I was 19, so I learned early on to front up physically. In Super League A, you often play against ex-provincial players with a lot of experience, so you need to adapt and make your mark.

What do you think about Western Province’s approach to signing young players?Everyone is given a fair crack at the union. A competition like the Varsity Cup gives guys a lot of exposure and puts you on the radar. The guys at DHL Western Province are very welcoming as well, which helps with the transition.

Would you ever consider return to playing club rugby?Definitely, but only for UCT though!

What advice do you have for young club rugby players? It’s so important that when the opportunity comes, and it will, to be ready to take it with both hands. You need to be ready to work hard and willing to get better.

JC Fortuin is currently in his 20th year as a referee.

The veteran has been the middle man in many major fixtures, including

Currie Cup and Super Rugby matches, and he is now sharing his vast experience on the Western Province club rugby circuit.

“I’m enjoying my refereeing at the moment,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “It’s been good helping out the younger refs as there are a lot of talented officials coming through the structures.”

For someone who has experienced the heady

Jerome “JC” Fortuin is one of the leading referees on the club rugby circuit.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE

heights of Super Rugby, it is surprising to hear that his favourite game this season was the Super League C encounter between Raithby Universals and Eerste River.

“I loved that game,” says Fortuin. “The conditions were awful, but there was no shortage of passion and skill.”

Although in the twilight of his career, the 51 year-old has no plans to retire anytime soon.

“I want to referee into my sixties!” he says. “Refereeing is an art form more than anything else. You have to make split-second decisions, which aren’t always easy in the heat of the moment. It all comes down to preparation and to be clear and concise when making calls.”

RESPECTED REF

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your background.I started straight out of matric as a player for Villager. I played there for 10 years until 1999. I coached at Reddam College and Rondebosch Boys’ before I joined False Bay. I played for them for a few years before I took over as head coach from Kevin Musikanth.

Are you happy with False Bay’s season? It’s been a long season for us, which began last October. I feel we did well do make the top six, so I’m happy with the progress we’ve made, especially considering that this year has been our first season back in Super League A. We wanted to qualify for the President’s Cup, so we’re happy with that.

Has the make-up of the team changed since last year? We’ve brought in a couple players from the new Western Province Academy in Tokai. Gerard Lotter has been great and really energised the group. We have a fairly experienced pack of forwards and few guys who played U20 last year, so there’s a good mix.

What are your feelings about the new league format? It’s been a good initiative to grow the game locally.

FRESH APPROACHFalse Bay head coach Jono van der Walt is bringing a fresh impetus to the club.

Obviously, it’s been a teething process and there are definitely improvements to be made, but overall, it’s been good fun. A competition like the President’s Cup is a great initiative and has proven to be very exciting and competitive.

Do you have a coaching philosophy?I’m a fairly young coach and up until recently, I would have preferred to be on the field with the guys! My assistant coach and I have focused a lot on tactics and analysis. We feel that spending more time off the field is key, not only to identifying weaknesses, but also in keeping the guys fresh and making sure they don’t become jaded. I also tried to focus on fitness and conditioning, which is vital for an open club.

Do you feel False Bay is getting closer to bridging the gap at the top of Super League A?I believe so. The top teams in Super League A play at a very high standard, but we feel like we’re a match for any one of them, especially at home. I don’t feel like we’re too far off that level as we’ve run them close a few times. It wasn’t long ago when False Bay beat Hamiltons and Maties in one season!
